This isn't a rip off of any other thread, trust me.

So for you faithful few with the AKs standing guard, what do you have them loaded with?

If I had mine right now (darn university policies), I would have a mag of 122 gr. Wolf Black Box locked in most likely (HP or FMJ, depending on what is cheap and available at the moment) . I've also got a mag on top of the safe with 124 gr. FMJ Golden Tiger for those times when I want to change things up a bit.

Wolf MC with the Ulyanovsk HP bullet, probably the best terminal ballistics out of the cheap/surplus x39 ammo.

Golden Tiger.

Gazing at ordering some Wolf MC.  But then I'd need to get more .223 for balance.

The reloads(?) from Cabelas use the A-Max bullet which should be very good, but they are reloaded from steel cases though

Edit: They are V-max bullets:

Sounds fun.

I don't have an AK but I did build one for my dad when I worked at Vector Arms. I think he either has Bear or Wolf FMJs.

When you build them all day, every day, 10 hrs a day like I did you start to hate them.

Nope, but I've had lots of them over the years and I'm burned out on AK's.  To me, they are not that much fun to shoot compared with my M1A, my AR's or my Daewoo, for example...

Althought I can't build a $300 AR, I'd wager that you don't own an AK that can keep up accuracy-wise with any of the above mentioned

I bet if you put $1500 or so in an AK....as they do w/ Piston AR's...you could keep up just fine.  Most piston AR's don't group as well as DI's.

Why do you think the AK was designed with a 30 round mag? Accuracy by volume.

And while I don't own one, my brother's 5.45 AK is no slouch when it comes to accuracy. Not as good as the aforementioned weapons, but better than 7.62 AKs. And remember that accuracy is related to ammo as well. All most everyone shoots is steel case imported blasting ammo, not brass case nice stuff. Shoot some Wolf out of your AR or M1A and report back. It'll still be better than an AK, but not by as much.

YMMV

I'd be willing to wager that there are people around here who have built AKs for under $150. If you bend your own flats and bought parts kits when they were cheap all it takes is a little work...

I bet in most cases folks are batting at closer to $200-$250 with a hundred dollar kit.  The US parts, rivets, etc.

The best AK I ever had was a preban Yugo underfolder...beautifully built and very good accuracy for an AK.  I used to shoot it with Chinese ammo, brass cased.

I have never owned a 5.45 but I did get to shoot a buddies and it was very good for an AK.

The only way I'd ever own another AK would be if I could replace the Yugo...it was a casualty of my divorce.  I just don't care for the short stocks, crappy ergonomics, etc.  I get fewer opportunities to shoot now that I'm married with kids, so when I do get to the range I want accuracy.  I use good ammo fired through accurate rifles.

A "real" AK would be cool to have...because the AK was meant to be full auto and is excellent in that role.  Accuracy was not on the priority list when the AK was designed.

I just picked up 3 of those. Got some Russian Molot arsenal RPK mags.

Might be my new first line AK mag. Who knows, I might load 'em up with some 123 gr. Silver Bear hollow points just to be different.

I think with an AK it's not as much about bullet performance as it is about putting holes in things. You can punch through most everything you'd commonly find, and you can do it a lot. "Keep pulling the trigger until they don't get up anymore."
