With this economy and job market it is still to see people doing ridiculous stuff that costs them a decent (or maybe not so decent) job. Here are the last five I have witnessed:
- Failed drug test (weed) - Misusing company vehicle (driving loads of miles to hook up with whatever and having sex in said vehicle, the vehicles have GPS tracking and everyone knows it) - Showing up drunk while on call - Filling up your personal Jeep for six months with a company fuel card - Internet porn and gigabytes of the stuff on company laptop
Stealing, misuse of employee purchase x 2, and missing work x 2.
There haven't been five people fired in the ten years I have worked for my current employer.
Management incompetence over a period of several years. Company probably going to declare bankruptcy next week. Everybody here has heard of the company too. Looks like 37 years going down in flames for me soon. On the plus side I will be going to a gun show tomorrow.
Missing work - x2
Attitude - 1 Poor work - 1 (great person, just couldn't cut it.) Email communications - 1 You CAN'T - I repeat CAN'T erase that stuff! |
1. Improper use of customer information
2. Harrassment of co-workers 3. Drug use on the clock 4. Drug use on the clock/leaving to get snacks 5. Attendance |
Being retarded, really. If you can't hack it working in a chicken joint's kitchen or as a waitress, there's no hope for you in life. 4 of 'em for just not doing their job right and one for not showing up and having his mom call and try to make bullshit excuses. I mean, we have to ask the kids if they can cut a tomato
Running over a dog, fucking chicks wanting official services, stealing government property/entering offices without authorization, lying during IA investigations and failing to meet standards during training (academy).

Calling the boss foul names on Facebook.

Quoted: There haven't been five people fired in the ten years I have worked for my current employer. That's pretty awesome, you the sole-proprietor of a one person company I can't imagine, I have worked for fortune 500 companies, the federal government, been a government contractor, and worked at some small businesses over my career, seen all kinds of weird stuff. The crazy part is it is still hard as hell to even hire anyone decent. Getting a bit jaded, the available workforce seems to suck more than the job market.

-Layoff
-Layoff We've only ever had two people leave in the three and a half years I've been there. To get to a full five we'd have to fire everybody else in the company. |
2 guys at once for being drunk and missing the truck. one guy for taking a swing at me when i was reprimanding him. another guy fired for getting the company truck stuck for teh 3rd time in a week. One guy made a wrong turn on the interstate and went 6 hours the wrong way when we were in a fairly big company convoy.
Couldn't meet production
Attendance Lied on application (guy had warrants) Attendance Attendance Most people don't stick around long enough to get fired. |
Person had enough independence to hang themselves. Thought that they could out smart the time clock, by clocking in at an off-site building about a mile away. They didn't realize that the garage also keeps track of what time you swipe your pass. Management put the times together gives them a warning. Person blames management for not being understanding. Dumb ass starts clocking on in time, but only did so because they parked their car outside, ran inside to clock in then parked in the same garage that keeps time of when you enter. Management gives them yet another warning one of those "last time warnings". Idiot blames management for "picking on them". Yup person shows up late one time, they terminate them. Their own fault.
Alcohol can do fucked up things if you let it.

accident in a company truck
missing money , we haul it for a living stealing money and pawning 4 company guns attendance leaving keys in the lock for an ATM |
Three people downsized, their positions are gone and everyone else gets to work harder.
One person terminated, she abused her sick leave repeatedly and lied to the boss about it and other matters. No good will left for her. One person told if he didn't return from surgery/sick leave/disability after a year, he would be terminated. He didn't return. This company has its faults, but people don't get fired here without a reason. |
not many are fired
1 was fired one a few months ago- for just bad attitude and performance 1 was fired for screaming and threatening the boss 10 were laid due to work slowing down in 2008 |
- Popping off at the mouth to a client
- No call, no show - Sleeping at work - Convincing a client to hire them part-time while trying to continue working for me - Lying to me about meeting an Army buddy on his way to Iraq; my giving you two extra paid days vacation to do so; and then the company you interviewed with, on said vacation days, called to verify your employment. |
2 go the ax for coming in and turning the clock back on the time clock computer, clocking in then turning the clock back to correct time. Got caught by the boss reconciling timeclock with alarm codes disarmed.

One guy just cut part of his finger off while stoned on the press brake. Failed the drug test and received his termination papers. Workers comp gets to deal with it.
Shitty attitude. I do temp staffing/temp-to-hire and brought everyone gift cards for Christmas. "Thanks man, that's more than THIS fucking place does for us." This was 2 days after asking if he had met his hours and if they were converting him over to their employee. A week later, he was gone. Same guy, him and his wife both worked there and would fight. She got the boot at the same time. Same thing, shitty attitude. Another guy was just a weirdo. Brought him in to the paint dept, which he had experience in, and he didn't want to paint THAT color. Then he'd just stand around staring at people. I think he was mildly retarded but it was hard to tell with the foreign accent. No call, no show. Claimed his wife was sick, his kids were sick for 3 weeks and he had to stay home. Then he wanted his job back. |
1. Hustling clients ("by the way, did I tell you that I'm starting my own company...here's my new business card...") And then the client calls the boss and reports it.
2. Lying and telling the boss that they're someplace working, when another employee just saw them at the Indian casino...and then the boss goes there and caught them red-handed. 3. Theft of equipment, abuse of equipment. 4. Piss-poor performance. I don't care if you just took early retirement from the DEA, you can't do surveillance to save your ass and this is a private agency where clients EXPECT RESULTS. Go back to work for Uncle Sam where you don't have to actually do anything but show up for work. (I own the company, and I fired every damn one of them myself...) |

1. 1 guy disappeared after his performance review. I ate lunch with him and everything was fine. It seemed like he was doing well but never saw or heard from him again. 2. We keep having HR people disappear (like 3 over the past 3 years) and I never knew they were getting fired until one linked to me on linkedin and we chatted a bit. 3. 3 plant operators were fired after a gas release occurred because 1 was sleeping on station in front of everyone and there was camera in the control room. They were just gone the next day but everyone knew. 4. A few people quit when put on performance improvement plans (no one who goes on them lasts) 5. We had our department administrative assistant get canned for typos. Really sucked because she always set up awesome lunches and parties. Few others here and there. |
Major theft of funds
Being crazy on the clock DUI in company car |
The only one I've seen was an Airframe and Powerplant Tech get fired on the spot for using a wrench with a big red tag on it saying "DO NO USE" to fuck up some very expensive hardware while the VP was walking around the hangar.
In the first post I was just thinking about the civilian side. During my time in the military I saw 36 that I remember get fired for drugs, 2 for severe travel claim fraud, 2 for homosexual stuff, 5 or 6 for multiple alcohol incidents, and a few more for incompatibility. That's not counting several forced retirements.
We just let 8 good people go because of "the economy". We're a multi-billion dollar global organization. Yeah, the economy, that's the ticket.

1.) Fucking up
2.) Reduction in Force 3.) Reduction in Force 4.) Fucking up 5.) Fucking up |
1) Poor job performance. Told someone he had a gun in his truck so I was asked to escort him out.
2) Threatened to beat up another employee while at work. 3) Constantly showed up late. 4) Was an all around piece of shit. 5) Quit/terminated following office sex scandal(s) and drama. Edit: forgot one - an employee was terminated for missing a lot of work and then posting on Facebook about all the fun she was having out and about while supposedly home sick. This happened more recently than the sex scandal thing. |

1 to alcohol abuse and 1 to drug abuse (pills?) are all that come to mind. Not a lot of turnover at my company.
We just got notice that there will be 100,000 layoffs in the next year for the group I work for.
The last firing was for throwing a death metal concert in the bosses basement while he was out of town.
- Drunk at work
- Stole over 250k over a period of 5 years - Attendance - Inappropriate use of the company credit card (buyin' horse feed was what I heard... )

Hmm, can't recall more than two terminations, but one was for attendance and the other was for what is essentially theft of company services.
However, it seems like my company loves to hang on to the most incompetent employees, primarily in management (I am management as well ). |
A supervisor got fired for sexual harrassment.
Another dumbass got canned for testing positive for weed on a piss test post MVC. A medic got canned for being a dumbass and giving the wrong drug for the medical condition she was trying to treat. The other two were for showing up half drunk for their shifts. |
1. Performance
2. Threatening another coworker 3. Threatening another coworker (second instance in 2 months) 4. Being a drunk 5. Being hated by management |
We don't have a lot of turnover.
A manager was let go a while back, but those not in upper management will never know why. There was a no call no show Someone took a laptop and was busted. I never hear about the night shift people that get let go. |
last one at my workplace was a perfectly good employee fired to make room for a member of the boss's church / boss's friend. the given reason was "late for work three times in a row". this is at a place where everyone is salaried and wanders in between 7:30 and 9:00. He was singled out and told he had to be in by 8:00 every day and canned after his third miss (where he came in at 8:03).
wtf. |
Employee theft of time, dope, and failure to maintain a work schedule came to mind.

Accident in company vehicle.
Theft. Poor performance. Smoking indoors. Poor attendance. We have people quit on a weekly basis, so it's hard to keep track of who was fired vs who left on their own accord. |
