So lets say you are in a bank and guys come and rob the place. They dont hurt anyone and on their way out they drop a sizable chunk of change on the floor next to you head. This has occurred actually in several movies.

So do you take the cash? No one will know and its a lot, like over $10000

Or do you return it?

I for one would probably have to find an empty pocket for it. Even though its technically stealing, thats a lot of clams.

Isn't all that money insured anyway? Would anybody actually be out anything besides the insurance companies?

I wish I could say no, but I'm not sure I'd be that strong... though, then again, I'm not sure I'd be strong enough to take it either. I'd probably be too big of a pussy, knowing I'd get caught... regardless of whether or not the cameras were gone.

I'm with ya on that one! If the money was used for that in the first place maybe there wouldnt have been such a problem with their damn bank being robbed.

And it's a hell of alot cheeper than insurance

I'd turn it in. But only because I'd have a heart attack while thinking about keeping it. The terror of getting caught would probably kill me....

Plus when a bank is robbed, after the robbers leave, the doors are locked while witness reports are taken and people are interviewed (about two hours) I would definately keil over dead if I had $10,000 burning a hole in my pocket that whole time.

Not my money. If it was an evil person's money (say terrorist or drug dealer) who lost the money and it wasn't my duty to retrieve it for Uncle Sam, I'd take it. Under your scenario, I wouldn't feel comfortable doing that.

After all, the theives stole it from the bank so at that point its the theives money. Technically speaking, your just stealing the money from the theives. And really, its your money anyways they took from the bank to begin with so really your just stealing your money back from the people who stole it to begin with.......

Do I think I'd do it? Yep. Several years ago I found a wallet with several thousand dollars in it at the Silver Lake Sand Dunes. Guy got every dime back. It's just what you do.

I did the same. But I did use some of the money to buy a mailing pouch and postage. Then I put the change and receipt in the bag with the wallet and mailed it. I am sure he was surprised when he got his wallet back and all his money.

After depositing a paycheck at the bank one day, I noticed that my $200 cash withdrawl had been recorded as a $200 cash deposit. I turned around and went back to show the teller that he had made a mistake. It was only $400, but it wasn't money that I had earned, and therefore it didn't belong to me.

Would I like $10,000? Yes. Would I accept $10,000 that didn't belong to me and that I didn't earn? No.

I've had tellers hand me and extra $100 bill when I was getting money from the bank. She miscounted and had no idea what she had done.

I told her right away, because I wouldn't want her to get in trouble for being $100 short at the end of her shift. And if I were to keep that money it would reflect poorly on me and the people who raised me, and I can't do that.

The only "insurance company" is a federal agency. the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, founded after the Depression to give people a sense of security for their money so they wouldn't cause even more problems by everyone withdrawing their money all at once.

So the money is also being stolen from the taxpayer in a sense.

Since it's not yours, turn it in. Title to the property, in this case legal tender, still belongs to the bank. Failing to turn it in is THEFT. It's the taking of property without intent to return it that makes it a crime.

I'd give it back, but it would be awfully tempting not to.

Never ran into that before, but had an awfully large bank error in my favor one time. Sat on it for 4 days before I let them on to thier mistake. They even took back the few cents of interest I had accrued over those 4 days!

Well officer, I was comming into the bank to make this large cash deposit, when the two men with, I think they were AK-47s, ran in behind me. In the confusion I dropped the cash on the floor. I am glad the men didn't stop to pick it up when they ran past.
