I have a Bass Pro Gift card and some cash... I was looking to get a new pocket knife. I really like the Benchmade Pardue AxiAxis because it is thin and light.

Ended up with the 940 - now just need to pick up some scales for it 940 & Griptillian Scales ... I am not really digging the green

I am thinking of getting these scales...

ETA: This followed me home today...

On the $109 model (I own) it is made with a cheaper steel and cheaper handle materials. I believe mine is Grivory handles and 440C? The more expensive model has G10 handles (superior) and 154CM steel (harder and hard to sharpen.)

I never carry the 531, it is too light, too slim, and too flimsy for my uses.

I carry a 710 everyday and have for 9 years. Based on other BM threads, so do MANY other arfcommers.

Pardue Axis $109

But what is the difference between the $109 one and the $150 one??

531 Pardue Axis $150

But I really really like

Mel Pardue 3550 Automatic $170
http://i.imgur.com/RZzoTMAl.png

Only problem with the 3550 is that Bass Pro doesn't carry it and I would have to carry that $50 with cash...

Price difference is due to different blade grind and G10 grips vs plastic. I had a 531 for a while but I ended up selling it since I didn't like how super thin the blade was.

Does Bass Pro sell ZT knives? The ZT 0566 is the best value in the sub $150 price range IMO.

OP, The Osborne is a bit wider, but overall similar in size. I prefer it.

My next benchmade will be the Bedlam . Out of those I say the last 1. I also like my current EDC

I really like Benchmades newest model, the 761: http://www.knifeart.com/benchmade761.html

Price is really up there though, you're talking almost Sebenza territory. It's a really great knife for the money if you qualify for Benchmades' LEO/Mil pricing though.

So any opinions on the 3550?

I like the ZT 0350 blade better than the 0566...

The BM 3550, IMO is too small. I have one and am not a fan.
Its also a bit slick, so if you gotta get all stabby with it, becareful your hand doesn't go forward.
Id be looking at the Impel and AFO
Link Posted: 12/31/2014 12:04:14 AM EST
I'd get a Contego with a CPM-M4 blade.

Since when is 154 hard to sharpen? I've been sharpening multiple knives with this steel for years and never realized it was difficult.

The 940 series are awesome carry knives.

I've looked at the 530s but just can't get too into it.

The 560 series ZT's are way better than the 350

Elmax over S30V, frame over liner lock, flipper over thumbstuds and spanto grind over folding Santoku knife

I had an AFO, it was stolen. It was a phenomenal knife, albeit a fatass one too.

I own both of the two you you are looking at.
The auto is nice but much heavier.

If you are wanting a thin and light Benchmade get a 940/943 Osborne. Had a Regular 940 that I loved and lost, and when they came out with the 940-1 I had to get it.

The 3550 is an awesome knife. I carried one for years on duty. Nice and thin with a nice snap. You will not be disappointed.

If you'reinto rapid fire assisted knives.

CCheck out the 581 and 586

Link Posted: 12/31/2014 12:06:50 PM EST
I didn't love the 3550 I handled. The button was kinda gritty to open, but it was thin and light if you're going for that. I didn't want quite that much thin and light, I bought the 5500 instead.

Get the Mel Pardue auto. I have had two, now I have none.

I am going to get one today with my bonus money. It carries so well in the pocket, and fits well in the hand. Good steel, too.

Easily the best pocketknife I have owned.

Bench made carries the life sharp. Just send it back and it will come back factory sharp. They have replaced worn items when I sent stuff in. I do not believe Gerber does that.

S30v I have heard can be difficult to sharpen but it should hold a longer edge than 154cm. I think..

Eta..

I think it is $30 for a bench made to replace the entire blade if you break it. Don't ask me how I know....

Hard to find a better carry blade for utility / protection.

I bought one recently. It's a good knife but not really built as an all-around EDC kind of knife. The blade is pretty thin and it takes up a lot of room in a pocket.

Of any folding knife I own though, I would pick it first for self defense.
