Still sucks. However, the articles by Kyle Lamb are very good, IMHO
I like AIWB as well |

His son's photography is very good too.
Lot of good stuff in Guns&Ammo.......I think Eric Poole has done a great job with the title |

Are they still lecturing us about how we need to accept some sensible gun controls?

Pretty pictures, fake reviews, and authors desperate for anything to write about.

I preferred Shooting Times in the 80's. I remember getting all excited on the way to Paperback to pick up some deer hunting and gun rags.

Well, they pounded it so hard at me that it is all I can remember about them... except maybe Bob Milek used to write for them in the old days. Anyway, it was a big FU to their core base at the time and I do not see the need to pay them to do 9mm versus 45 caliber and AR-15 versus AK-47 comparisons.

Guns & Ammo used to be good. I have some of my dad's old issues going back to the 1970s and it was a very different magazine. The RKBA section was forceful; some of the stuff written there quite possibly would violate the COC if posted here or on many gun forums. Great stuff. Blackpowder section with Phil Spangenberger was cool. They had some cool historical articles and articles involving the writers going out to conflict zones to take pictures and write about the guns there, and were just very detailed. Reviews were also much better and rarely seemed like long advertisements. The great old gunwriters were also there, too.
Today's magazine just sucks in comparison. The last issue I bought was the last one with Cooper's Corner (published post-mortem). By the time I could afford subscriptions (before that purchase)n it had ceased being worth subscribing to for years. |
|
I buy it once in a while if there is something in it that sparks my interest.
Sweeney has this amazing ability to fill page after page with words, yet no actual substance. I'd hate to actually try to carry on a conversation with the man in real life, for fear I would be dead before he shut up. |
|
Is it still like $8 to buy a copy off the newsstand?
I never subscribed, but I'd buy maybe half dozen copies a year of various gun porn back in the day. Gary James, Phil Spann...(whatever) Col Cooper., all fascinating stuff to a teenager with empty pockets. Who was the older guy who did the long range handgun shooting with the TC contender and bolt action single shot pistols? I liked his stuff too. I noticed his son picked it up when he died, but I didn't enjoy it as much. Patrick Sweeny has a gunsmithing book that isn't bad if you're starting at zero, but this was also before youtube. |
|
I quit G&A when Col Cooper died. I should have quit after Elmer Keith.
The only gun rags worth the paper they're printed on today are GUNS and AMERICAN HANDGUNNER. |
|
|
Have the settled the 9MM vs .45 controversy yet?
I gave up on them a long time ago, never saw a bad review of anything. Much prefered Gun Tests magazine, they were honest in their reviews, |
|
Before the internet I used to read a lot of magazines.
But the information became so topical I got bored and stopped. The writers I liked were: Bob Milek Chuck Taylor Ross Seyfried Gary Paul Johnston Peter G. Kokalis John Plaster |

My grandfather bought me a G&A subscription every year for Christmas from about 1985 to 2005 .
It was great however in retrospect there was a fair amount of derp that people would have savaged them.over now in the days of the internet. On that front the really were no worse (or better ) than Shooting Times , Gun World , and others of that era . |

I dumped GT because I didn't think their analysis and comparisons were superficial. It's not like Consumer Reports with a testing lab but rather Bubba & his bros doing backyard tests with somebody on the keyboard writing it up. View Quote |

Was that an ammo specific issue of RECOIL you posted about? I couldn't find it in stores. Also, is there any way to get RECOIL cheaper? $10 off for signing up for a year is still pretty steep. The only gun magazine I buy is the annual-ish Surplus Weapons that someone publishes.

G&A is like Playboy magazine; you only buy it for the pictures.

Sucks indeed. Its all ads, almost no actual info. Garry James used to write some interesting stuff(and no disrespect, Im sure there are other good authors there around), but other than that little actual reading material.
Ironically, Spanish gun magazines are awesome. Nice long articles with some meat to dig into and learn a thing or two. |

I first started reading G&A in the early to mid -70's. Today's magazine is a shadow of what it once was.

Same here. I had subscribed for a couple years but the more I read, it seemed like it should have been titled "Sock Drawer Shooter". Ultimately I found little value in their evaluations. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

Guns & Ammo seems to pontificate Jeff Cooper as if he were some sort of prophet.

American Handgunner was the last mag standing for me and I gave that up in the early 2000's. Ichiro Nagata and Nyle Leatham's photography was great. It was the only mainstream mag during the 80's-90's that did much of anything on USPSA shooting and gear.
For as much hate as Recoil gets I'm glad they are doing it. Most of the stuff isn't for me but I think its good that we have come far enough that a gun rag isnt just fat old white guys with big bore six guns and stories of how badass Bill Jordan was. |
