I'm looking to go deer hunting next Christmas (yeah it's far away, but still...). I'm looking at an SKS as an inexspensive Deer rifle. I was told that the 7.62x39 Russian has nearly the same trajectory as a 30-30. Military gun Supply has Yugo 59/66 SKSs for 129$. Here's a link:

http://www.militarygunsupply.com/shop/item.asp?itemid=CRYU5966

Should I get one? If so, should I just leave it as is or attempt to remove the grenade launcher? I don't really need one, although if 22mm grenade were legal I'd bet they'd be useful for flushing out deer.

And if you want to get a cheap deer rifle get a Remington 710... (That is what your post count was when you started this thread) I have one in 30-06 and accurate.

LETS NOT TURN THIS INTO A REM 710 BASHING THREAD. Everyone has a "I heard of this one guy who had a 710 and the barrel was so bad he shot himself in the ass" Unless you PERSONALLY has one with malfunctions... Ehhhh I dont wanna hear it.

Another thing-are these rifles reliable and fairly accurate? 2" at 100 yards would be great, although 3" probably would be more realistic...

My brother-in-law has one, its fun to shoot although kinda seems cheaply made.  I wouldn't get it if you wanna put a scope on it.  Since the brass ejects strait up and twards the barrel your limited to a short scope.  He's tried alot of different aftermarket mags that seem to be crap too.  If I got one the only thing i would do is replace the stock.

Edit: Spelling

I own 11 sks' and I love each and every one of them.  Check Aim surplus and you can probably pick up a shooter grade for $89.  If you want to spend a little more you can get one that is virtually brand new for $159.  Four of mine are Yugos and they are front heavy.  If you can find an M59 instead of a 59/66 they don't have the grenade launcher.  The Albanians don't have the launcher either but they are getting difficult to find and expensive (I've got 6 of them)  The Russians are nice but run a little more also.

Remington 710:  The only gun I ever saw given away FREE on the Arfkom Equipment Exchange.

Cheap, but decent  Bolt Gun  = Savage 110

DPMMN 'Splain something please. You have all your SKS the same? I mean other than the Yugo they are all identical. No custom stocks or gadgets or scopes... Why?

(Honest, a legit question)

I like them that way, They are fun and cheap too shoot, I dont care for the different stocks myself.
I think the only thing that I would change on them would be to put Peep Sights on them

From Left to right It goes Yugo M59/66, Yugo M59, Norinco, Norinco, Russian
Link Posted: 1/6/2005 11:10:02 PM EDT
Are there any problems with the Yugo m59/66 rifles that I should know about?

They like to eat a lot of 7.62x39 ammo

get some AK/SKS Stripper clips for easier loading

Just make sure that the one you get comes with one of those cool mono-pods.

If you're looking for a hunting/fun gun I'd look for a cheap Norinco... not as many 'extras' like grenade launchers, etc. so they're lighter.  I like mine... and you can find them for $150 or so if you look.  If you want to spend the least amount of money possible, go with a shooter grade Yugo.

ETA: Norinco also has a chrome bore, Yugo doesn't.

I've taken a few deer with my SKS.  Not to mention, they're cheap to shoot, cheap to buy, easy to clean and you can make it uber tactical for pretty cheap.

So, yes, get one.  At least one.
Link Posted: 1/7/2005 5:39:29 AM EDT
Affirmative.

That's a roger.

yes, I can shoot it more accurately than my AK.
Link Posted: 1/7/2005 6:52:21 AM EDT
Everyone who has over 5 guns should have at least 1 SKS in there. I've got about 10, and 3 of mine are SKS's (thanks to my C&R license).  2 59/66's and 1 59.

They are very expensive to own and shoot.   I get my wolf from cabelas at $80 per 1,000 rounds and get 2 free plastic ammo boxes each time.  I can't even get 9mm for that price.
