I've been there twice on business and loved it. Definitely a sailing/boating haven. It's not that big so I'm assuming you'll cover all the good places to eat in a matter of a few days.

Tour the old mansions (these are like Bruce Wayne sized mansions)...

Battleship cove in Fall River, MA (probably a 20-30 minute drive from Newport at most)

I visited there a few years ago. I went to restaurant/bar that had a whole lobster and a beer for 15 bucks. I can't remember the name though. It was not on the water front. Any ideas fellow rhode islanders?

Edit: The place looked didn't look upscale at all. (which i like)

I grew up in New Bedford, MA which isn't far from there.  There is a lot of excellent Portuguese food in the New Bedford/Fall River area that I encourage you to try.  Cafe Royal II on Rt 18 in New Bedford is wonderful.  Also Pa Raffa's and Ma Raffa's for Italian food if you get there.

This.

My grandmother used to work at the Breakers way back in the day when it was still a residence.

Have the steak or Prime Rib at Sardella's Italian Restaurant.

Thames St International Yacht-Athletic Club.  Storefront social club.  If you've staying by the waterfront.  Dress warm from the cold wind off the water get gusty.
