Don't know what the hell's gotten into me. I can't explain it. But I gots to have a Harley Road King. Not drooling for a new model or a custom built model. I'd be elated with an older RK. Not decided on a specific color. Black, Silver, Burgundy, ...hell I don't know.  What the hell is going on ????

Fuck, I don't even ride. Never have. I should get checked. Soon.

Mid-Life Crisis?  I just turned 59 last week. I've owned a number of sports cars, a Porsche 911, a few Vettes, even an NXS.  Never a motorcycle. I'm just infatuated with the look of a Road King w/hard saddlebags.

I'm married so this would be a nice weekend fun toy we can both enjoy.

Best model hd builds in my opinion.  You won't regret owning one. Get a 10 or newer.

Interested in a 2005 Police RoadKing with hardly any miles? It's all set for escort work. Siren, air horn, rear blue & red wig-wags on the radio box, mustang pillion pad, anti-wobble fixture on engine, etc....

a 10 might be a little out of my budget. I really don't want to finance. I figure an older model with low miles will have most issues identified and fixed.

OP, I'm a lifelong motorcyclist. I'm thinking if you made it this far without owning one, you can make it the rest of the way without owning one. Everybody likes the idea of owning a bike, it's the reality of owning a bike that some people have problems with. Get some training, then get some more training. Get a small cheap used bike and learn how to ride before you get a large motorcycle.

I loved my RK and rode it to work almost every day.  I broke down and got an Ultra Limited a couple years ago since I had to have all the 'gadgets' as I got older.  The RK was a smooth ride and just a pleasure to be on.

BTW, I've owned just about every make and style of bike... The Axis trio (Jap, Italian, German), Allied (Brit), and even a couple of Commie bikes.  Dirt, tour, cruiser, go-fast, and 'all the above in one'.  The RK was my first HD and put a big smile on my face.

The RK is the only HD product I'd consider, but I can't make myself buy a cruiser and the lifestylers have ruined the brand for me.

Then you'd just be following the typical fatality statistics.  By all means, make a Harley the bike you learn on.  Get on out there and become some minivan driver's nightmare.

Pre-2008 if you want to work on it yourself. After that, you're more tightly bound to the dealer's networked diagnostics equipment.

Gen 1 Twin Cam is what I'd go after. Take it up to 95" or 103", install cam drive and compensator sprocket reliability upgrades...maybe a 6-speed transmission if you have everything out of the frame. Then add a chassis stiffener and go have fun.

This person has a good point. Take classes.alot of classes. When you know your ready get a cheap jap bike and go for a ride. Cheap AND small. Trust when i say, life sucks less when your kicking a 3-400 pound 1,000 dollar bike of you while laying in a ditch vs a 750 pound 6,000 dollar bike.

One more thing, when you think you've been riding long enough w/o an accident, that you cant wreck...you will wreck.

I just did 5177 miles in 13 days on my '96 FLHR.  It's got over 80K on it and little electronic crap to fool with.  Evo motors can be rebuilt damned-near infinitely so when that time comes that's what I'll do instead of a new bike.

It's never left me stranded in all these years.  With regular maintenence it is as dependable as I could ever ask a machine to be.

And the most important tip. Rev the motor every chance you get, esp while sitting in traffic, apparently Harleys cant hold their idle, cause every damn Harley rider does it.

Rode my road king to work this morning.

Get a 2003 and later with fuel injection.
Or a 2009 and later for the improved non death wobble frame.
Take the class.

Fast enough to have fun, not so fast that I need to be doing 2-3 times the speed limit to enjoy it.

Bought a Road King and rode my R1 about 3 times in as many years before I sold it.  A bit more work to toss around a touring bike, and it scrapes a lot sooner, but they're still fun. I never had a bike that wasn't fun!

Take the MSF, and then buy what you want.

The wife and I both ride. Neither of us had ridden much since dirt bikes in high school. But we decided to jump back in. Bought a Dyna Wide Glide, which we both enjoyed. But that back pillion wasn’t cutting it for date night. With work and kids, two bikes just didn’t make fiscal sense.

So we traded the Wide Glide in on a Road King last weekend. She rode it in to work Monday, and said she's in love. I'm pretty happy with it, too.
