How would yall that are going with 5.56 rifles hunt? I understand its possible, especially with the tiny deer on the east coast, but if you only had one rifle to do everything you wouldn't want a slightly larger round?

Not legally unfortunately.  Rounds are often limited to .270 dia or higher.

I would keep my dad's old bolt action Western Field 30-06, and a .357 magnum revolver.

Not sure I would try it for bear..      I think a 140g 6.5x55 is about the smallest thing I would attempt on a bear.  ( east coast black bears)

The deer in MS are the size of a large golden retriever.
