Garand and 1911

Any decent scoped 30/06 and a Glock 22/35

Hunt quietly with a spear or bow and arrow. Defend from far away with one shot/one kill. Defend up close with an infinitely easy to find parts/mags/ammo gun (which around here is the G22)

Glock 17 (or: 19,22 or 23).  Gen 2 or 3 for any of them.
Maybe an M1 or a plain-jane 14.5" AR-15 (no flash hider) in 5.56.

I guess it would all depend on support and scenario in mind.
If I had to keep 2 for survival?   Glock 17 and a Garand
If I had to just keep 2 for normal use?   1911 (or Glock 23 gen 3) and a Colt (or Bushmaster) AR15 in 5.56

I'm not sure I understand your statement..
I only take ten rounds when I go hunting and only carry five.
The OP didn't say this was a doomsday carry, only which two guns would you live your life out with....

Same here.  It's an easy choice since both guns and both cans are within 5 feet of me.

Oh, and some of you need to reread the topic title.  It clearly states "One handgun, one rifle."  Yet, at least a few of you have included shotguns in your battery of choice.

Just joking around. I know OP didn't say it was a SHTF scenario. I was implying a SHTF scenario. I was thinking about the survival aspect when we got off on the hunting tangent.

ETA: I'm not knocking .308 in any way. My only problem with it is that I can't afford it right now. I have a decent supply of G3 mags though.

For a lot of people, including myself, hunting is a significant part of owning firearms. I may never shoot a human, and I hope I don't, but I've shot me some deer.

Ah, gottcha....
Yeah, in a SHTF situation my choices might also be different (maybe), I'd have to think about it for a while.....

Tiny deer?

There's nothing that I want to kill regularly, that I cannot kill with complete confidence using .223 and heavy bullets.  There's nothing I might need to kill, that I can't kill with lots of heavy .223 bullets  Although a 6.8 or 6.5 may be a better choice.

I'd go for an old,  but very well-kept Mauser bolt-action in 7.92 or a Bulgarian AK as far as rifles go.

Pistol, I'd go for a Ruger GP-100 .357 magnum or a Browning Hi-Power.
