Gonna shoot a cars gas tank to see if it will explode, like in the movies.
Looks like they are using AR's? Only saw the promo clip for a second. |
A full tank with no oxygen, not likely on a hot day with lots of fumes and available source of oxygen and a spark from the bullet or another ignition source then possible.
I've tried shooting metal gas cans with all kinds of ammo. I tried lead, copper FMJ, steel jacket, tracer, and even inciendiary into the side of the can. The ONLY time I ever got it to ignite is when I shot a tracer over the open top of the can, igniting the fumes. Even then, that took a few shots.
10bux says it dont do anything but dump gas on the ground. Ive seen C3 videos where they do this test. the only way it is possible is to shoot a tracer round in it. Or shoot a hole and then as vapors escape shoot again and hope ya get a spark and set it off. Just shooting into one wont do shit.
I've already seen it. Nothing happens. I did learn that both the ar15 and ak47 will penetrate all the way through the entire car.
I liked the one where they shot different guns at bullet resistant plexiglass that they like to stand behind when they test stuff; didn't give them as much protection as they thought!
I like those guys though, they've made it clear they like guns. |
Found this for FWIW. |
Shoot it enough times and it will catch on fire. Not blow up, but it will burn.
Who's the dummy in the middle? |
Why thats Buster, the Mythbusters test dummy of course! |

That's what stood out for me as well in that episode. A car is worth ZERO cover when it comes to rifle fire. I'd think the block would be ok but the body might as well be wet toilet paper for all the protection it provides. |
They had an AR, AK, and a .308, if i recall correctly. Its been many months... corrections anyone?

I didn't get a real good look at what they were shooting, but I think it was an AR, a Galil, and maybe a FAL. I am not sure about any of them other than the AR though.
And if they think thats cool, they should use a .220 Swift! That thing would go from one end to the other, including the fucking engine block.
But if they want to "reproduce" the results, I suggest something with HE in it. Like a 40mm grenade. |
I was so pissed that they didnt blow the thing up at the end.
They use the same car in a later episode to bust a bunch of traffic radar myths! Tell me Cadillac don't make a hell of a car. |
Well they better blow it up sometime. |

What the hell does one do with a BA in Russian Literature.... |
Host a TV show where you test urban myths and legends. |
get sent to some soviet country/russia as part of the special forces should the cold war go hot? |
I have a buddy who is a Foreign Area Officer (LTC) with one of those degrees. He also had anumber of other degrees. Hell of a guy. |
That guy held a pretty tight group when debunking the myth about hiding behind a car door too. Very good episode!!!!
That's worth noting! |
Great show. My favorite is the sigarette-toilet one. They put that mannequin through hell.
I believe the .308 was a FAL Sgatr15 |
HECK! Did you see where they dropped him down a broken elevator?? SGatr15 |
I'm just glad they have the new female assistants. The tattooed blond with the tattoos that can weld is HOT.
Feeling a little redundant today ? |
Train indigeneous personnel in foreign countries for insurgency operations should we be in conflict with them. Much like SpecOps troops trained Saudis before the Gulf War.
Can you say "Green Beret"?? |
Saw it last night. What a cool show. The production values have shot up since last season!
I thought they had a couple of "lovely assistants" on board! Shooting the car was pretty cool. Think too: New cars are made with thinner sheet metal (when they're sheet metal of course) and in general, lighter. Auto penetration, even from front to back (if you miss the block), should be a snap. |
haha, that's what happens when an employee walks in while I'm in the middle of an arfcom post. |

Well, show the (c)lass, dammit! |
about 5 years back at an outdoor range with lax supervision, someone had a junk lawnmower. Since it was that person's target and not mine he let loose with a full mag of .223, nothing. Shooting buddy and I both opened up with either a MAK90 or AR, we caught the lawnmower on fire! Gas tank leaked fuel and a spark ignited it, way cool! |
No car door would hold up to rifle bullets, I think they need to redo the car door episode with handgun bullets. Dunno what a 9mm will do. Anyone got a car they want to loan me? |
9mm penetrates car doors. |

Hmmm.....me thinks someone should send them an e-mail. Something to the effect that they need to strap a bottle of tannerite to the gas tank then shoot. That will certainly make it go BOOM!!!
I can't believe you guys haven't seen the "Deadly Weapons" video. I thought it was required viewing. It debunks all of the Hollywood myths all set to a cheesy '70s porn soundtrack.
In the movies and on TV we've all seen thousands of cars explode.
During the Cerro Grande Fire in Los Alamos in 2000, I watched dozens of cars on fire, they all burned, and not a single gas tank exploded... |
"Deadly weapons" is a good one - I heard it was used as a training aide in several police departments.
Got a link? |
good show, entertaining to watch...leaves much science to be desired, however.
eta: if you want to test whether or not rounds can defeat a car door you sure don't need to destroy a whole car...just go down to the junkyard and get you some parts. ask me how I know |
They also had an episode where they took "improvised armor" to the range. They shot everything from phone books, a deck of playing cards, and lexan of of various thicknesses. They didn't shoot a bible, but shot a book of similar thickness. They rounds tested were .22lr, .357, and .30-06. If a .22 penetrated, they didn't need any further testing.
Another favorite is the testing with "magic" bullets made of ice and meat. |
