Gonna shoot a cars gas tank to see if it will explode, like in the movies.

Looks like they are using AR's? Only saw the promo clip for a second.

I've tried shooting metal gas cans with all kinds of ammo.  I tried lead, copper FMJ, steel jacket, tracer, and even inciendiary into the side of the can.  The ONLY time I ever got it to ignite is when I shot a tracer over the open top of the can, igniting the fumes.  Even then, that took a few shots.

10bux says it dont do anything but dump gas on the ground. Ive seen C3 videos where they do this test. the only way it is possible is to shoot a tracer round in it. Or shoot a hole and then as vapors escape shoot again and hope ya get a spark and set it off. Just shooting into one wont do shit.

I've already seen it. Nothing happens.  I did learn that both the ar15 and ak47 will penetrate all the way through the entire car.

On one of the shows, Adam (L) made reference to Jamie Hyneman (R) having previously been a member of the Special Forces.

I haven't been able to find any further info related to that.  Does anyone know if that is true?

I liked the one where they shot different guns at bullet resistant plexiglass that they like to stand behind when they test stuff; didn't give them as much protection as they thought!

I like those guys though, they've made it clear they like guns.

Shoot it enough times and it will catch on fire.  Not blow up, but it will burn.

That's what stood out for me as well in that episode.  A car is worth ZERO cover when it comes to rifle fire.  I'd think the block would be ok but the body might as well be wet toilet paper for all the protection it provides.

And if they think thats cool, they should use a .220 Swift!  That thing would go from one end to the other, including the fucking engine block.

But if they want to "reproduce" the results, I suggest something with HE in it.  Like a 40mm grenade.

They use the same car in a later episode to bust a bunch of traffic radar myths!

Tell me Cadillac don't make a hell of a car.

Well they better blow it up sometime.

Train indigeneous personnel in foreign countries for insurgency operations should we be in conflict with them. Much like SpecOps troops trained Saudis before the Gulf War.

Can you say "Green Beret"??

Saw it last night. What a cool show. The production values have shot up since last season!

I thought they had a couple of "lovely assistants" on board!

Shooting the car was pretty cool. Think too: New cars are made with thinner sheet metal (when they're sheet metal of course) and in general, lighter. Auto penetration, even from front to back (if you miss the block), should be a snap.

about 5 years back at an outdoor range with lax supervision, someone had a junk lawnmower.  Since it was that person's target and not mine he let loose with a full mag of .223, nothing.  Shooting buddy and I both opened up with either a MAK90 or AR, we caught the lawnmower on fire!  Gas tank leaked fuel and a spark ignited it, way cool!

In the movies and on TV we've all seen thousands of cars explode.
During the Cerro Grande Fire in Los Alamos in 2000, I watched dozens of cars on fire, they all burned, and not a single gas tank exploded...

good show, entertaining to watch...leaves much science to be desired, however.

eta: if you want to test whether or not rounds can defeat a car door you sure don't need to destroy a whole car...just go down to the junkyard and get you some parts. ask me how I know

They also had an episode where they took "improvised armor" to the range.  They shot everything from phone books, a deck of playing cards, and lexan of of various thicknesses.  They didn't shoot a bible, but shot a book of similar thickness.  They rounds tested were .22lr, .357, and .30-06.  If a .22 penetrated, they didn't need any further testing.

Another favorite is the testing with "magic" bullets made of ice and meat.
