The food isn't too bad for 1 or 2, vet bills can be though. For 30 of them though......  My wife got another quick video of Lyriq oday. So far Gunnar seems to be adjusting well. Tzar was in with my little hell spawn Aspen, and my husky Aries was in with SERE so I swapped Aries and Tzar around so that SERE, Tzar, and Gunnar are all together. Tzar and Gunnar have been running and playing nonstop since! Since Tzar is like Velcro with me, every time he throws himself down at my feet for attention, Gunnar is right there with him and has licked my hands and let me scratch on his head multiple times now! Plus, Aspen has her favorite chew toy back, her favorite game is called "fuck Aries up" 😂 |

Busy busy busy lately. Yesterday, we had an emergency rescue happen. We got a call that someone had a wolf in their back yard for a few years and we're going to have to shoot it....... We hit the road and here is how the story unfolds. (I'll just copy/paste my wife's post from our rescue FB page, and fill in any details anyone wants more info on "I received a message several months ago about an incident in my state where a man said he was bitten by his pet "wolf" while handing her food thru her fence. He contacted several places to try placing her with no help or offers to take her, so he opted for euthanasia (hesitant but a new grandchild was born at his home, for which he feared for her safety in near future). I declined at the time due to having just stepped out of the ICU, and dealing with my health issues. Fast forward to a week ago. I had a few pms to the sanctuary page about a high content to pair with one of my widower boys. I hesitated to reply with Cobalt's passing and left them on unread. I had another friend pm again of her ad posted..and something in my heart snapped. I jumped over to my sanctuary messages and asked someone that knew the issue to give me information. I contacted the owner and we talked over the phone. He told me he feared her since the accident and no ones gone in with her or even touched her in her pen for a long time. His gsd had broke thru a panel and bred her- he wanted to have her go now or be pts and the pups rehomed immediately.he no longer knew what to do, and admitted his huge mistake in having acquired her 4yrs ago..he seemed broken in admitting his faults with trying to make her life better. The owner had called a breeders ad for wolf puppies he found online and priced a pup. He sent a chunk of money and had Bob the broker reach out to meet him in Ohio. Transport was arranged and he sent his friend( who was a wolfdog experienced owner ) to make the drive.Upon arrival to meet the broker- his buddy called him stating it was very awkward. Bob was short and pushy, impersonal and answered ZERO questions .The animal in the crate looked MUCH older than a 6wk old pup, and he felt pressured that he may lose the huge payment if he didnt take the animal in the crate. It appeared to be a 6 month old instead. Feeling like he could make it work, he ok'd the swap and had his driver bring Alva home. She was nothing like the buyer thought, and had ZERO experience..struggling to handle her, he became nervous of her unusual behavior. He attempted many times to let his akc gsds play with her, but noticed the intensity and differences in the way they acted. He separated pens and his son became the only person who showed her attention .The owner decided to rehome her and tried posting her on hoobly and fb. He tried to learn as time went by, wanting to breed her to his favorite gsd line to keep a few "special puppies". Everything went wrong- he had no idea what behaviors were faced in winter season with a high content in heat( no lineage to go by in order to ask anyone about genetics etc). His dominant male gsd reached her and tied thru the fence, impregnating her. panicking in total denial ..,he seperated the dogs and waited until the pups weaned (no socialization..no imprinting etc. left them with the mother for several weeks.) The female grew naturally defensive and terrified them as they went thru trying to take her pups away...finally did and realized "there was no making them ok with people". So in desperation he posts them for sale and starts reaching out to find the mother a home. Once the toddler had begun walking, fear of watching the wolfdog stalk and charge the fence created even more fear (esp following the biting accident). So many people were chatting about this, but i tried to cast aside the "pointing fingers and hashing about the awful ignorrant owner".. and made the decision to bring her in. Over the phone, the owner seemed regretting and apologized, repeating how he knew he had failed her after not knowing what he was doing by buying a wolfdog. So ..after convincing him to do whats right, not euthanize..i agreed to rescue her. Alva is doing great..shes allowed grooming and letting us clean her ears, making notes of anything to tell the vet (pulling a bunch of ticks off of her), she gobbled bacon down with her meds❤️. This is her the day he got her at 6 months old Attached File So, we get there and it is absolutely fucking appalling. It smelled like Fallujah, not fucking joking. This poor thing was all bones and bad condition fur. The guy won't approach her pen closer than 3 feet from the fence and cautions everyone to do the same. While my wife is chatting with the family trying to get more details I walked up to the fence and reached through it, she licked my hand and pressed up against the fence for scratches, I thought he was gonna lose his mind. He said he's never seen anyone do that to her except his son years ago. She had never been indoors, didn't know her name (Alpha), never been collared, never been on a leash, etc. so we knew it was going to be fun to try to catch her in this nasty pen. The pen that was all mud and feces, and had no drinking water save for a mud puddle in a hole she had dug. We decided to hit her with some meds to sedate her a little since we had a road trip home with her and decided on 300mg trazadone and 600mg gabapentin together because she was so tiny and frail. The guy brings out bread to put it in, yes, regular white bread. She is going nuts for it because she is so starved. So, once she starts getting a bit high it's time for the work to begin. She wants no part of the collar and lead, so we start slow just draping it across her back as she runs past. Anyone who has ever halter broke a horse knows this game too well. She is sneering and showing teeth, not aggressively, just in defense as a fear response. My wife and I are both in the pen (that has its "roof" caved in so far that you can't stand up, she's 5'3" and I'm 6'2") and we each have a slip lead. I have a collar and muzzle looped around my neck to keep them out of the way but ready. We end up getting her on the slip lead after a few tries and she backed up into a corner, where I was able to cover her eyes with a towel to keep her calm (we call it sacking them out) and I lifted it up enough to get the muzzle on her. She never once tried to bite, the muzzle is just there for protocol. When I got her muzzled, the owner stepped up and approached the fence and touched her for the first time in years. Attached File Attached File I carried her to the truck, and we opted to forego a crate and just have her ride on the back seat with my wife while we drive, with a safety tether anchored to the truck in case she tried to bolt when a door was opened. She explored a little in the truck while we drive, but spend most of it circled up with my wife getting pets and scratches, getting her nasty bits of fur plucked out, and the first of the tick removal process started. We get her home and my wife brings a crate up to the truck so we can load her in and carry it into the cabin. We didn't want to put her into an enclosure outside until getting her vetted. This poor thing is 4 years old and has NEVER seen a vet, never had any vaccines, etc and one look at her tells you just full of parasites. We get her inside and I decide no more muzzle. I hate having to use them, but like I said before, it's a safety protocol to protect HER. It's like 5pm by this point and I haven't eaten all day so it's sandwich time and time to see if she likes turkey and Swiss as much as I do. I don't have any pics, but I do have videos that will follow, just gotta throw them up to YouTube tonight. I'll post them tonight in chronological order after we get everyone fed. Ok, everyone is fed, fat, and happy. It's almost 2am.... So today Alva had her first trip to the vets office. We crates her and loaded up the crate, unloaded it and carried it into the vets office. Once we got in the room, I slipped her muzzle on and took the top off the plastic transport crate so they could reach in for her temp and a fecal sample and she did great. She doesn't walk on a leash yet (and may never) so I picked her up and set her on the scale... 55.6lbs. A 4 year old adult wolf weighing 55 fucking pounds. Her level of malnutrition is absolutely disgusting. She got her shots like a champ, as well as her blood draw for her heartworm test. As you can imagine, she's HW positive. We hit her last night with an initial dose of ivermectin and pyrantel, and now that we know we'll be following up with doxy and moxidectin. She even got up and explored the exam room a bit while we waited on the HW test results. The vet techs daughter who was probably about 8 wanted to see her because she said she loved wolves but had never seen on in real life, so she got to see her in the room too. For her first time, this girl got to eat some good food, starting with a $55 tomahawk that was in our donated meat! Bad thing was she didn't know what to do with it. I sat down and cut it into chunks with her and hand fed her. Her eyes were huge like she was wondering if she got euthanized and went to wolf heaven. So, now we're caught up in her story, and she's racked out in her big crate in the cabin where she will be staying for another 4 days for observation before she gets to her enclosure. I just want to take a moment to say thank you to everyone. It's touching to see your support, and today is a big day. 1st, it's the day Alva wouldnt have seen if we hadn't received her, she was set to die yesterday. I can only imagine how horrible it would have been for her too considering they were afraid to go in with her. I can't imagine them making a vet trip for euthanasia, so they probably would have just shot her and botched that as bad as they did with her care. 2nd, we received an amazing donation this morning that let us pay off her vet bill and order her full heartworm treatment immediately. My wife is crying, she's that ecstatic and touched by this. I don't cry, but there is apparently dust in the air messing with my eyes. We love what we do, and we both did this on our own and by ourselves on different side of the country before we got together, and we're stronger now together, plus she definitely didn't need to be doing this by herself going through chemo for the second time. These pups have taught me a lot on life, and were revered by both mine and my wife's ancestors. I went 120% while I was enlisted and ended up pretty broken, so if this is the only way I can continue to make a difference, then this is what I'll do 120%. Mushy stuff aside, I'm out working on Alva's new pen to get it ready for her. Alabama and it's piss poor weather are trying again to throw a wrench in the works with the constant thunderstorms. Alva is going to go into the pen that Cobalt (RIP) and Raven were in. After his passing we gave Raven her grieving time and moved her in with Kohanna our resident gay boy. Kohanna lost his "life partner" Tate a few years ago and hadn't been receptive to ever having a female in with him. Now that he's 12, and Raven is 14 he seems to have softened a bit and decided he can have a female best friend. I'll be excited when it's done and time to move her out to her enclosure. Most of the work it needs is simple reinforcement due to age, but it also needs lined with 9ga chain link around the back and sides since little Alva is so small she can slip out through the openings in cattle panel fencing right now. We use the 9ga for this since wolves and most wolfdogs (and the occasional destructive husky) can actually chew though the standard 11ga chain link. |

So, I realized in the last week's chaotic weather, repairs, and Alva's rescue that I had forgotten to post pics of Kohanna and Raven together! I mentioned we moved her down to his enclosure and that he was previously with another male who had passed a few years ago (Tate aka Tater tot) and refused any female companionship but these two hit it off. Well, got her enclosure damn near done. The last few things it needs will get done tomorrow with her in there. During work pauses today during the downpours, we had her out inside the cabin walking around and exploring. She is doing really well so far, and is coming around to my wife and I walking around her and approaching her. I picked her up today and carried her without her panicking or anything too. At her age she should be 85-120lbs and a hell of a lot taller, this poor thing was so starved and malnourished that her growth was just significantly stunted so she will forever be our "pocket wolf". She let me brush her for a bit today without being restrained at all, and she has learned what belly rubs are! After a lifetime of getting a bowl or two a week of cheap kibble and nothing else to eat, she is finally starting to get her guts into order now that she's on a good diet. Switching to raw meat was tough at first, she didn't know what to do with it or how to eat it, but after I cut up that steak for her she's learned enough that she ate her first Cornish hen. The enclosure she will be in is right in between Pashka's and the one that Merlin and Brandi are in, and she reminds us of a little version of Brandi, so we've been jokingly calling her Alva Brandisdóttir 😂 I also found out more of the horrors she went through. I made a comment about a huge scar across her nose to my wife, and my wife said the owner told her what happened while I was off inside her pen with her. The GSD that broke into the area she was kept and allegedly "bred her through the fence" use to run the fence line and antagonize her. She poked her nose through the fence and was sniffing at him once and he tried to take her snout off. The owner admitted he didn't check on her because he was afraid to go in with her, and just saw all the blood and figured he'd get her body out once she died because of how much blood there was. They didn't see her for a week because they didn't check on her, and she stayed mostly in her little igloo. No joke! This girl is tough and a survivor! She went through living hell and came out the other side, now she gets to thrive instead of just survive. They definitely eat better than we do too!! 😂 We've been contacted by a few people on our FB page who think they know the breeder and down lines she is from originally, so it's looking like my initial thought is correct that she is essentially a captive bred wolf instead of a Wolfdog, but we won't know for sure unless we do an Embark DNA test on her. Either way, I cannot fathom what would make someone treat any animal like that, let alone one they paid thousands for. People who hurt animals make me angry and sick. I've hunted all my life and still do every chance I get, but cruelty is cruelty |

What a day today! I am exhausted but I feel good. Kinda miss having little Alva inside though 😂 Attached File Wife got this shot of her right before we got her to her enclosure. You can kinda see some of the damage on her nose. We actually had a volunteer for a few hours today so she and I carried the crate down to the enclosure so I could release Alva into it, then we spent the next hour and a half with hog ring pliers reinforcing all the joint between fence panels. She really seems to be adjusting well and she likes her new neighbors. SERE and Tzar have been at the corner of their enclosure staring at her, Merlin has been indifferent, Brandi thinks nobody is as cute as she is, and Pashka seems to like her. She ate her food great tonight, and took her meds well too. She's on doxycycline twice a day so she doesn't get septic from the heartworms dying off during her treatment. I set up a temp wireless camera in front of her pen like a baby monitor so we can keep an eye on her, I'm always hesitant with a new wolf in an enclosure the first night, she did great out there today with no escape attempts, but night is always different. | Stark contrast from the first pic to the video. She looks like the happiest woof in the world while in the house. She looks scared to death in that enclosure. She probably thinks she is going to be left out there alone and neglected again. I'm sure she'll relax after a while but you can tell she is feeling some anxiety right now. |

You're not wrong. We're making sure she gets extra attention, and it comes pretty much all hours since the wife and I don't sleep, I average 4 hours a day and she gets less than I do. She's doing well though, everything considered. Her appetite is coming up, we just have to do it slowly to avoid overloading her. She's still taking her meds really well, and loves dad bringing her bites if Swiss cheese. She's back to smiling again, and starting to normalize herself a bit. In the house she was happy, but was also in a stress response where she wasn't acting like herself. I'm sure she loved the AC, but everything made her overly nervous in the house. Most of our rescue calls are for males, so I'm sure we'll have a penmate for her before the summer is over |

Ugh, what a day. We have another emergency rescue call happening. Someone in Indiana has a 6 week old high content that they want gone or they will put him down. The pup was bought by a notorious back yard breeder and animal abuser in indiana. She decided that he is too wild,dangerous and unsocial to keep to breed and demanded him gone this evening before insisting on immediate euthanasia. This poor 6 week old baby boy is in an emergency situation, his life is on the line. The POS with him is now demanding an 800 dollar replacement fee on the " steep financial loss " she has suffered. We are panicking trying to figure out a way to get him safe into our hands. We have transport arranged to try to get him out and half the transport fees covered.
