It seems like as time goes on, there is more and more Wolfdog breeding by unscrupulous people who don't properly vet their adopters, and occasionally people still kill the adults and steal pups from dens. That's not nearly as common as it was about 25 years ago, but still happens |

Me personally (as a wildlife biologist), if it looked like Garmr (the wolf in the pic), I'd assume it was someone's high content Wolfdog that escaped and see if I could tell if there was a collar and if I could catch it. Outside of areas life Yellowstone NP where wolves are use to seeing people around them and just go about their lives, wolves generally don't let themselves be seen. I've tracked a pack for a week straight gathering fur, paw prints, and scat and been only minutes from them, but never once getting a glimpse of them aside from trail cams. Occasionally people get to see them in the wild in a more natural setting, they are the lucky few! |

If it wasn't a Wolfdog, I'd go about trying to get pics, scat, and hair samples to DNA test and see where he originated and the pack he's descended from. On a side note, there are wolves in some areas of northern Canada that have no fear of humans because they've never been hunted, and most of these wolves have never seen a person before. Now, when biologists go out to study them, the wolves are curious and walk right up to the biologists, sit by them, show off their pups, steal the biologists equipment, etc 😂 Attached File Attached File |

So we're getting conflicting stories on his origins. We've been told he's from two different breeders, a flea market, and a broker from a zoo (all stories from the same person). We've eliminated most of the stories as bullshit, so our best conclusion so far is he's an extreme high content Wolfdog from a particular unscrupulous "breeder", or he's a den robbery by that breeder. Either way, he's 99% sure from that guy. I've been around quite a few captive bred pure wolves, extreme high content wolfdogs, and wild pups from dens during capture and tag missions and I'm leaning more towards den robbery at 4-5 weeks old. My educated guess puts him at 8-9 weeks old right now |

| So far the little guy is relaxing quite a bit, he's inquisitive and learning that human hands aren't bad. He comes up to us, touches our hands with his nose, and is now playing tug of war with us with us too! He is absolutely in LOVE with Odie, Odie so far doesnt reciprocate though so we crate Odie when the little guy is out. He runs right up to Odie's crate and starts wagging his tail and licking at Odie's face and trying to submit to him |

Pashka is notorious for accidentally grabbing a hand, he going full shark feeding frenzy mode when he eats and will grab at anything. Alva is doing it too now that she's getting use to the fact that food is a normal thing and she's not going to get beaten or sprayed with a hose for eating |

| The above pics are what movies just can't get right, wolves seem to have pretty short narrow muzzles compared to most of the dogs or mixes they use to portray wild wolves. And CG.........they give them the biggest muzzle they can get away with to better show the teeth. |

For the most part that is absolutely correct, but there are a few types that will have a longer more narrow muzzle. Arctic lineages have a short wide muzzle, while more typical greys tend to have a bit longer dust buster shaped head with a more noticeable lack of a defined forehead "stop". Oh what a past few days it's been.... SERE, my wooly coat Alaskan husky/low content Wolfdog has given himself the mother of all skin infections from his love of laying in the mud to stay cool. He managed to get his coat so severely matted that no amount of brushing could right it with all the clay in it, and it trapped the moisture on his skin. With huskies/wolves/malamutes/etc, and really any double coated dog, you cannot shave them because the layers of their coat act as insulation to keep them cool in the heat. Well, his coat was bad enough to need to be shaved. The problem comes with the fact that we're having extreme heat index days so he cant be outside in his enclosure with Tzar and Gunnar. He also can't chill in the AC in the cabin with us because we are already playing musical crates with Odie living inside, and the new puppy Sigurð being in there as well. When one is out, the other is crated. So, SERE is now staying in my 5th wheel camper to stay cool and calm, and I'm having to stay with him to make sure he doesn't dig at his skin and make it worse. 🤦 Looks like I'm in "the dog house" by default for a bit until we can get him good enough to go back to his enclosure. Luckily, he's not destructive, and I have a camera in here to keep an eye on him when I'm outside working or going on meat donation pickups. He's not a senior yet (only 7), but he's got hip dysplasia so he doesn't get around like he use to when he was younger. He's spending most of his days looking pitiful because of his coat, and laying around on the folding couch 😂 Attached File |
