Cool.
My BIL was a Boiler Tech on the USS Pharris in the early/mid 80s. About the same time Tom Clancy blew it's bow off in RSR. |

Nice.
...and because I'm a nerd...."if it were TRULY a scale replica, what would it weigh at 1/350 of the original....?" Yikes! still 26,000lbs of displacement - or 11.8 Long Tons (4,066 Long Tons original). What in the hell would an 18" model have to be made of to reach that weight? |

Pretty familiar. The big changes from my time on one in the mid-70s is the hurricane bow and the superstructure continued back to the front of the torpedo magazine amidships. Probably some electronics changes too but they aren't on the model, yet.

Are you building Pharris with everything for'd of the ASROC launcher at the bottom of the Atlantic?

Knox class, very cool. Seen a lot of them when I was on a tender in the 80's
I was briefly on the USS Edward McDonnell (the Eddiemac) until her decom. in 1988. Great ships to serve on. Very similar in design. Attached File |

So how much would the model weigh if the weight is correct for the scale?

I loved building ship models so I could float them in the pool and sink them with BB gun salvos.

Build her out as FF1082 Elmer Montgomery. I spent a year of work ups and Desert Storm attached as Air Det HSL-36 det 9.
Spent time on Pharris in 89. She was out of Norfolk. Also time on Bowen and Paul. All my helo dets were on Knox class. Good boats. Single screw but we were good as an ASW team. Always had fresh water. Attached File Attached File Attached File |

Nice! I'll be keeping track of this...have fun w/ the build!

|
Used to watch my dad do these. I had to do the snap together ones. Do you paint them too?

View Quote It would be 0.21 lbs or 3.5 oz. Scale weight is 1/350^3 of the real weight. Basically the model us 1/350 as long, 1/350 as wide, and 1/350 as tall so 0.21 lbs would make it the same density as the real one. |

Yep, goofy-ass looking Knox class.
No wimmenz allowed onboard! I think... |
|
When I was on the Forrest Sherman(DD-931) I built a model of her, shot it a couple times to simulate torpedo hits and then sunk it in a friend's fish tank.
I thought it was hilarious at the time. |

It's 1/350th as long AND 1/350th as wide AND 1/350th as tall. 1/350x350x350 the weight. Even 1/350 of the original would be around 11.5 - 12 tons |

Anything less than 1200 pounds meh View Quote P fired were a pain in the ass, supercharger on a boiler? , but boy they would make steam fast and ran great when it all worked right. ACC guy nightmare as far as controls. Would do great today with modern technology though. Nothing wrong with the M's at 600 psi. Hell the Aux. ship had A types at only 400. Then again, I'm sitting here making 2500 psi....still a BT after all these years. Those small Frigates were great, even with a single screw were pretty damn fast. |

USS Vreeland FF-1068, School of Hard Knox, Loyal Order of the Big Screw, Alumni.
OP, can you put a ruler in the next update pic to give it some scale? Hard to tell how big it is. I remember building a Monogram kit USS Ramsey FFG-2 as a kid. |
