I was ogling a Lahti 20mm in the SAR building when Ian stopped to look, we spoke for a few minutes about the Lahti. He has the same persona in person as in his videos. He is great asset to the firearms community.

Well he did graduate from Purdue.
He also bought his own land, paid off his student loan on a year, and built a house himself.

Ian often does the gun matches in Phoenix or Tucson from what a friend of mines tells me.

The same friend also told me he heard from other people that not everyone likes him. Apparently he was told that when he has the chance to shoot someone else's firearm to do a video, he doesn't clean it after, and gives it back dirty, then asks for another one to borrow.

I don't know the validity of that claim as I have never heard of it elsewhere/I don't know personally, so I don't really believe it until I see it.

But seriously just ask him, he's a member here.

Love viewing his channel.

Hate how he pronounces 'Garand'.

He did make some small mistakes in a video about a Gew.98 Mauser, but that is forgivable given the totality of his knowledge and work. Plus I am a Gew.98 nerd, I doubt many collectors picked up on the miscues.

He is a book worm on the subject.

And he’s spent considerable time speaking with the actual engineers behind the designs of guns.

Totally agree. And I think that is WHY Iam doesn’t clean the guns, if the story is true. If you have a rare firearm, you probably wouldn’t want anyone to clean your shit. Potentially devaluing it a bunch, on accident.

I've always liked Forgotten Weapons and binge on it every so often. It was after recent FW binge session that I noticed his name in the bylines of a few American Rifleman articles. Generally, Russian stuff, SKS, Mosin, etc, etc

Most people pronounce it incorrectly. They way he pronounces it is how the Garand family pronounces their last name, IIRC.

I'm also a huge Forgotten Weapons fan.  I check out the channel everyday and it's really rare that I don't care about whatever gun he's going over on any particular day.  99% of it I'm glued to.
I need to get off my cheap ass and throw a couple bucks at his Patreon to show appreciation I guess.
Makes me wonder what kind of money he gets now from Youtube, Patreon and whatever else he does to make money to travel all over the place and shoot and edit videos all day.

He earns enough to make it his full time job, but InRangeTV is completely de-monetized from Youtube and they've said Full30 is a pittance.

Ian was smart in his younger days and build a house completely off the grid and has no house payment as it's paid off. So he wouldn't need as much as 90% of people based on that alone.
