At first glance, this looks like a delightfully even match: Dodge Challenger Hellcat vs. Tesla Model S P85D. Old-school V8 muscle versus new electricity. Problem is, one of these cars sets a quarter-mile record at this drag strip, and the other has a sad, dismal failure of a run. Everybody point and laugh at the Hellcat driver.

If you don't have the most delicate of footwork, all of the Hellcat's 707 horsepower is just going to do what it wants, which is spin the tires and let its ass go sideways. It is unashamedly what it is: a merciless boat of a car that will eat you because that's precisely what you wanted from it. You poked the Hellcat by buying one. Bless your heart, I love you people.

Luckily for this fellow, he keeps it in a fairly slow burnout down the drag strip.

The Tesla Model S P85D, on the other hand, is a modern wonder full of traction control and other aids that help translate all that delicious electric torque into something usable by four meaty tires. It's considerably easier to mash the throttle down and go quick in than the Hellcat, so it comes as no surprise that Tesla's double-engined wonder set a new world record while it was there. This Tesla ran an 11.6 quarter-mile at 114.6 MPH, which was verified by the National Electric Drag Racing Association as being the quickest production electric car in the world.

Meanwhile, in the other lane... is Hellcat just doing more burnouts on purpose? I don't think there's enough smoke for that to be on purpose. Did he accidentally buy Prius tires after shredding the OEM set?

I mean, the Hellcat's run is 17.46 seconds at 82.74 MPH. I'm glad the Tesla is made in America too, otherwise this would be a sad, sad, dark day for our great country.

Just thought it was funny how bad the run was. With a good driver the Dodge is faster:
Dodge released a video today that shows the big brute at the strip posting an NHRA-certified quarter-mile time.

The results: A blistering 10.85 seconds at 126.18 mph on street-legal drag radials. (It posted an 11.2 at 125 on the stock rubber.) For comparison’s sake, we’ve squeezed 12.3 at 119 from the Camaro ZL1 and 11.8 at 125 from the Shelby GT500.

Seems like purely a driver issue.

With that much HP you need stickier tires.

False start, spinning his tires... yeah, the Hellcat driver was a dumbass. I'd like to see what the Model S D does against a Hellcat with good drivers in both cars.

Hellcat needs driver mod.

They should do a 310 mile race.

Assuming they're both good drivers and both running factory stock tires, the Hellcat should post a slightly lower ET every time.

Not to mention that cooking a Traction Control system into electric drive is easy as pie.

I test drove the Tesla P85D on Sunday and the instant torque on that thing was awesome. Threw my head back into the seat. It was also neat how when you lift off the accelerator the car breaks on it's own. Only time you have to press the break peddle is to stop completely.

But at the $125k price tag my dad is considering other options.

Stupid.

Hellcat needs driver mod for sure.

My Civic will probably run a 17, but it doesn't have enough power to spin the tires either.

Raised gas prices with his policies
Strict regulations and taxes for "gas guzzlers"
Initiatives to promote higher MPG cars
Subsidies to Tesla

He essentially helped facilitate electric cars

Every vehicle that I own that I've had down the strip went faster than that.

My Neon R/T would've beat it by two seconds.

I'd bet that 11.2 on stock rubber would only happen 1 out of every 10 times a driver does it. Too thin a tire and too much torque; will especially be a problem with the manual.

I like the Tesla; but get back to me in the future when that power costs 1/2 as much.

That or break down since it's a Chrysler.

challenger probably would have ran it down with a good driver. The telsa though should be able to lay down the same time every run with any driver, just mash your foot and go.

The difference for me was the company. Tesla has yet to play a single game with me, on anything. They sent people to my home to replace parts, hell even some of the body armor stuff they sent people to my home. If I have any problem, they either send a truck out to me, or will send someone to pick up the car to bring down to Phoenix for me. Every update gets applied either automatically, or they send someone to do the update. (I gained an extra 5% range on the latest software upgrade, done overnight, while I slept.)

Contrasted with Porsche, where it was always a gamble whether they would honor an obvious in warranty complaint. I prefer the companies I buy from cater to me, than I need to be catering to them. Tesla comes to me, Porsche requires a very long window for an appointment.

YMMV.
