I was out in the back yard tonight with my 8 y/o GSD, taking some photos, and I thought I'd share a few.

Post 'em if you got 'em.

This is Gypsy, cooperating for a few pictures.

I paid $100 for my first, and $75 for Gypsy.  But you can pay 50k+ for a schutzhund trained dog from Germany.

My favorite dupe!

That moose antler saved all our furniture, except a chair leg, and our ankles.  It was cute watching puppydog curling up on the antler palm and chew on tines.

Found a pocket of water in the tundra at Hatcher's Pass.

My current German Shepherd - Zac, AKA, Fat Bastard. He is 4.5 years old and weighs in at 115lbs. He is exactly as goofy as he looks. He's very friendly and laid back. He has basic obedience training, but nothing advanced because it far too much work for him. He can often be found laying in the kitchen floor or asleep on the porch with his head in his dog dish.

My previous German Shepherd - Maxx. He was much more aggressive and took all phases of Schutzhund training quite well. This dog could jump a 6' high fence no problem and even went through a closed bay window after a deer which he took down and killed. This dog was capable of opening doors (including the fridge), fetching the paper, running off coyotes, and so much more. He was very talented. Sadly, he is not with me any longer due to hip dysplasia, but he was the epitome of an well-trained German Shepherd.

Don't buy a GSD! Go check out the German Shepherd Rescues first and you might get one for free. They take in dogs that people do not want for some reason or another - many times is merely because the German Shepherds are so high energy and people cannot cope with them as puppies. They then essentially give the Shepherds away to good homes.

Both of mine were rescued GSDs and I think I only paid the $100 neuter fee on each of them. You'll get the AKC papers as well if the dog has them.

This is by far the best guard dog (and dog period)we've ever had on the farm. She rides in the tractors with us, rides shotgun in the truck when we're movin hay and goes absolutly everywhere with us. We've had more than a few situations resolved because she walks up and stands that other ear up. She's awesome.

I love how the left ear hangs down. I'm sure it would grab my attention were she to stand it up while looking at me.

Damn .mil filters. I can't get into my photo-hosting site.

Loki, my GSD is in my avatar. It was his first boat ride up in Maine; he was not quite a year old.

He's now 2 years old and around 115 lbs.

I paid $1200 for him. His grandparents are from the homeland and his dad competes, but he is just a big house pet.

He is a Shiloh Shepherd -- a perfect GSD times two. Current weight almost 170 but I want him to lose a couple of pounds. At fighting trim he will be around 160. You can read more about him at Chopper's Page

The pic is small but he is not.

27" at the shoulder and 85lbs of Shutzhund fun.

He is very lean and has nothing but rippled muscle.

And he is a free feeder

He just loves a good bite and playing with the children from the neighborhood.

I would call that "small." Mine was 85 pounds before he was seven months old.

You are missing one of the great advantages of the breed. You can make sweaters from these dogs. You don't even have to shear them.

He isn't an old country dog. He was born and bred right here in the good old USA. You can read all about him on his web site Chopper's Page
