I remember an exhibit at Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry that had a fuel rod in a pool of water with a walkway over it. You could see the blue glow as you walked over it. There was a sign that said you shouldn’t stop as you passed over. It’s probably been 50 years since I’ve been there. I wonder if the exhibit is still there.

Its been a while since I had my "build a nuclear reactor at home" series from Time life books...

That's a fuel assembly full of uranium pellets.

A *used* fuel assembly. New ones aren't dangerously radioactive, it's the by-products of fission that are along with prompt radiation from the reaction itself.
