NEW YORK -
Isaac Hayes has quit "South Park," where he voices Chef, saying he can no longer stomach its take on religion.

Hayes, who has played the ladies' man/school cook in the animated Comedy Central satire since 1997, said in a statement Monday that he feels a line has been crossed.

"There is a place in this world for satire, but there is a time when satire ends and intolerance and bigotry towards religious beliefs of others begins," the 63-year-old soul singer and outspoken Scientologist said.

"Religious beliefs are sacred to people, and at all times should be respected and honored," he continued. "As a civil rights activist of the past 40 years, I cannot support a show that disrespects those beliefs and practices."

"South Park" co-creator Matt Stone responded sharply in an interview with The Associated Press Monday, saying, "This is 100 percent having to do with his faith of Scientology... He has no problem — and he's cashed plenty of checks — with our show making fun of Christians."

Last November, "South Park" targeted the Church of Scientology and its celebrity followers, including actors
Tom Cruise and
John Travolta, in a top-rated episode called "Trapped in the Closet." In the episode, Stan, one of the show's four mischievous fourth graders, is hailed as a reluctant savior by Scientology leaders, while a cartoon Cruise locks himself in a closet and won't come out.

Stone told The AP he and co-creator Trey Parker "never heard a peep out of Isaac in any way until we did Scientology. He wants a different standard for religions other than his own, and to me, that is where intolerance and bigotry begin."

Rather diplomatic way to say, "Hey Issac, STFU!".

Gee.. I wonder if that had anything to do with it.

First, it's not a religion - it's a cult.

Second, he didn't have any problem making money off of shows taking swipes at other religions.

And he just does it now.  I think somebody from the head office called Isaac and reminded him that Scientology had the dirt on him. If he was really "outraged" he would have quit when the show aired.  Sucks too because he had a great voice.  If this ends up killing Southpark, I swear to God I'm going to call the ATF and tell them that the scientologists are making illegal machine guns.  The ATF is currently 1-0 against religious cults.

They'll manage to get past him leaving. I just wonder whether they'll kill him off or go the route of 'chuck' on happy days.

I was just getting carried away with it all.  Until someone gores your ox or pokes you in the eye it's all fun and games.  For some people the turn-off could be simply making fun of a beloved person, like Billy Graham or Bob Hope.  You'd think Chef could have figured out, (especially after Team USA) that these guys will gig ANYONE that exposes their soft underbelly of dogma.

"Fudge 'em"
One thing you can say about Matt and Trey, they are equal opportunity. Charlie Murphy get's my vote for the new voice of Chef. He's done a recurring character on The Boondocks, who is "ethnically challenged", and does the voice over for the Travis Barkley cell phone commercial.  Isaac Hayes is an ass-hat. Maybe this will inject new vitality to the show.

Actually the ATF got their asses handed to them by a religious cult. It was the FBI that had to finish the job the F-troop couldn't do. Either way, scientologists against the ATF... we win either way.
