Animal Oddities
Researchers at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) captured this image of a barreleye fish (Macropinna microstoma) in the deep waters just offshore of Central California from a video taken by a remotely operated video at depths of 2,000 to 2,600 feet. Since it was discovered in 1939, the barreleye's vision has been a mystery, until scientists at MBARI solved it on Feb. 23, 2009. The barreleye has extremely light-sensitive, tubular eyes that can rotate inside of its transparent head. Capped by bright green lenses, the fish's eyes point upward when it looks for food overhead, and then they point forward when the fish is feeding to focus on its prey.

What? You don't like fish sticks?

Since it's impossible to kill it with fire if it's in the water, I vote that our new response to anything scary or strange in the water be "Kill it by dumping large amounts of industrial chemicals into the ocean" It's really the only thing that fits.

I'd love to see a hi-res closeup, expecially of the muscles along the ddorsal area behind the clear head.

I wonder how the clear connects to the muscle. I wonder what the clear part is made of.

I would eat it

Negatory on the no fire in the water.

Think 'magnesium'...

But why kill it? Harmless fishy, minding his own business, probably never seen himself in a mirror...
Link Posted: 9/18/2009 6:38:31 PM EST
It looks sad.
Link Posted: 9/18/2009 6:39:49 PM EST

Link Posted: 9/18/2009 6:42:32 PM EST

I know you can get fire going in water... but how would you get it to 2600 feet down!?

Why kill it? The same reason humans kill anything... because it's different

If its eyes are inside of a transparent head, then what is the point of those "eye" things on the front of its face?
They look like lids with no balls inside. What is the point of having eyes that are not used? Evolution generally does not care about cosmetic needs.
Do they open up when the eyeballs rotate forward? If so, why bother. If you have a transparent head to see up, why bother with eye holes to see forward? A holdover from the earlier form I guess.

I personally welcome our new swivel eyed, clear headed fish overlords. But in the event of a rebellion, what round would be appropriate? Birdshot?
