D12 Rapper Proof Slain in Detroit

Tuesday Apr 11, 2006 2:30pm EST

Rapper Proof was shot to death early Tuesday morning in Detroit, the Associated Press reports.

The performer, 30, whose real name is Deshaun Holton, was a close friend of fellow Detroit native Eminem and a member of the rap group D12. He also had a small role in Eminem's semiautobiographical movie Eight Mile.

The shooting took place outside a nightclub on Eight Mile Road and left another man in critical condition, MTV.com reports. The name of the other victim – a 35-year-old man – was not released.

According to Detroit police spokesman James Tate, both victims were shot in the head after an argument escalated into gunfire at the CCC Club.

A posting on D12's Web site, D12 Online, says, "Memorial service arrangements are still being made, and (Proof's) family and friends would appreciate privacy during this difficult time. Arrangements for fan remembrances are being planned, the details will be posted on Proof’s official site, IronFistRecords.com."

Proof, Eminem's best man from his wedding (this last one with Kim) and member of the rap group D12, was killed early Tuesday morning during a shooting at a Detroit club on Eight Mile, according to the Associated Press. The incident left another man critically injured. Both were taken to St. John Hospital where Proof, was announced dead on arrival. Proof, whose real name is DeShaun Holton, 30, was set to work on his third album.

In addition to Proof, two from Eminem's crew have been shot in the past - protégé Obie Trice was shot this past New Year's Eve on a Detroit freeway, and D12 original member Bugz was shot and killed last May during a picnic at Detroit's Belle Isle Park.

Eminem is currently going through a divorce with on-again-off-again wife Kim Mathers.

Looks like time is up for ol' Tic Tic.

Are we supposed to recognize this guy and why should we care that he's dead?

ETA: Ok, I see you were editing while I was typing. Now I know who he is, but I still don't care.

Well, I don't know about you guys but I'm giving up on growing up and becoming a rapper.  Maybe I'll be the first person to give my live body to science.  Kinda like an organ donor with guaranteed fresh parts.

Maybe my memory is faulty but I don't remember the Rolling Stones shooting it out with the Doobie Brothers or the Oak Ridge Boys doing drive-bys on the Temptations.

All I remember is bands dying in shitty plane crashes.

Prior to reading this story, I could have offered this up as advice, as he was on his way to the club:

"Hey, Proof. That movie you were in involved gun play and gang violence outside a club on 8 mile, and presented it as if to suggest that such things were normal and to be expected. You and your associates spend a great deal of time insulting other people through music. Many of the people you insult are likely to frequent the same clubs, and are known to be armed and associated with a criminal element. You are considering frequenting a club in an area where violence, retribution and crime and a way of life. Maybe you should stay home, huh?"

In before the rap appologists.

Actually, it'd be D10. There are (were) six members of the group, and each one had a self given alter-ego (i.e. Marshall Mathers = Slim Shady). 6 x 2 = 12.

Not that any of you care about that, though. I find it saddening that you delight in the death of others.
