Finally, after almost a decade, I have regained territorial rights to the garage. It was filled floor to ceiling with MiL stuff that we cleaned out of her house when she passed away. My wife could/would not touch it for that long. Now that it's all finally gone, I can finally build the workbench that I need...and alway wanted.
The plan is for normal use, but I want to build a bench that will also be used for reloading. Sturdiness will be first and foremost. Going out on a limb, I purchased heavy duty retractable casters so that I can move it around in the garge as needed. I am curious what the rest of y'all have made to fit your garage space. Looking for ideas: what works...and what didn't work as envisioned. So show off what you got! |

I'll join.
Just bought a new house and would like to build a wall-mounted workbench. |

How ever long you build your bench, build it 87 inches longer.

I would build two benches. One a true work bench with vise etc. and a reloading bench. My work bench gets trashed, dirty and beat up. I wouldn't want all that near my 650.

Current bench. 2x4s, 4x4s, simpson ties, 1" MDF top, 3 generations old vice (grandpa, dad, me) and a beer fridge underneath.. Built it 15 years and 3 garages ago (it is not fun to move).
Likely going to retire it soon, plan to build a steel framed, wood and steel topped bench that will span most of the side of my shop with HF tool chests integrated into it. Attached File |

Mine is the single bay of my 3 car garage, so not a huge amount of space. Old cabinets work great for me, and my compressor in the corner between them.

Then I covered the entire wooden surface with rubberized mats, including beneath the Wilton vice. The center work area is roughly 5’ wide and 10’ long. They want retarded prices for the benches now these days, or I’d add a few more. View Quote I've thought about using a couple for reloading benches, but wasn't sure how to anchor them to the wall. |

I’d post a pic, but currently my workbench side of the garage is torn apart and being renovated. Got some new cabinets on order, hopefully they get here soon.

I second whoever said build separate reloading and workbenches.
I would also think hard about putting the reloading bench somewhere other than the garage. Humidity and temp swings make it less than ideal. Mine is in an unfinished room in the basement, that stays within a 10 degree range all year with sub 30% humidity. Mine is two 3/4 MDF sheets screwed to 2x4s, and screwed to the wall studs. That's another thing, I vote screw it on, it makes a big difference. I screwed the first MDF layer to the 2x4 frame from the top, and then flipped it upside down onto the second sheet and fastened it from the bottom. This way, there are no exposed fasteners on top. Thinking about coating it with a finish of some kind, but I like the smooth finish of the bare MDF. |

Built this in 2005 when I first moved in to my place
Sturdy as hell, I could park my goldwing on it without any worries. I modified (lengthened) the plans for this reloading bench. and left off the top cabinet & back wall. Think I had about $120 in materials (at the time) Reloading Bench Plans The only thing I would do different is make it a few inches shorter, as it's a bit high for workbench. I have since built dedicated reloading benches in my basement, so I might still take this and cut down the 4X4 legs to a proper height |

I used a 2x4 Basics kit, with the shelves, and sourced a 1-3/4" industrial butcher block top for it.
I use it pretty much only as a gunsmithing/reloading bench, and for that, it works great. Really debating selling my upright/stacking ball-bearing slide toolboxes and getting at least one of the rolling workbenches with toolbox drawers as a general utility workspace. |

View Quote post it in here, Ill keep the thread alive... Or we can try and get a shop/garage sub forum created... The DIY section is ok, but I think a dedicated forum to shops/garages would be awesome.. I mean, 90% of America has a garage, and I doubt 90% believes in Bigfoot and aliens, yet we have a sub forum in general for that.... (not to knock that thread, I love it, Ive seen some shit in the woods that I cant even begin to explain in my years)... |
