To be fair, the white supermoto rider behind the impact vehicle didn't have many good options. Swerve right and hit his buddy who is tumbling on the ground, swerve left and possibly hit a semi cab, go straight and right into the back of the sliding motorcycle. They both lived so it was a good choice but damn he bailed on the bike and threw himself off in the path of the semi... maybe not what I would have done
 . Not a fun scenario to find yourself in. |

One of the many reasons that I don't ride anymore. Too many reasons for you to go down. Last summer a buddy of mine lent me one of his bikes. We drove around the country for a little over an hour. I spent at least 45 minutes of that ride looking for animals, cars, etc. Only really enjoyed about 15 minutes of the ride. Don't need to do that any time soon again.

Very serious. I assume your incredulity means you have a response. I'm listening if you do. A supermoto bike is very light, and the rider's mass is a greater part of the breaking dynamics. You have to be more careful in balancing your braking to ensure the most effective stop possible than on a heavier bike. And, max breaking on paint is a very bad idea. This rider had a step change in friction coefficients going from paint to asphalt, and it caused an amazing high side. This was a set up for failure. |

The front brake is a magnificent device, great stopping power. But on a motorcycle there a point at which you can apply too much front brake and this brings the rear wheel off the ground. When this happens a few things could go down; Flip over the handlebars similar to the video, loose control because the gyroscopic force of both wheels are now janky as hell, or you do a graceful "stoppie". Applying the rear brake puts down force on the rear. You can also apply to much rear brake and slide. There's a finesse to stopping quickly to say the least. |

Couple of years ago I was behind a motorcycle on the highway. He ran over a coyote and stayed up. I stopped to see if he was okay, he was and bike wasn't damaged. However, he was freaking out.. shaking and such. He had just gotten his motorcycle endorsement and was scared shitless. We were both heading to the same town so we loaded his bike in the back of my truck.

Here's the way it was explained to me, in a few different instances. If you're putting enough into the front brake, the corresponding drastic change in weight distribution to the front, and the resulting significantly reduced weight on the rear means no significant braking or control from that tire. The best you can do is quickly squeeze as much front brake as the conditions and your skill will allow. This is a panic stop on public roads. Any rider in this situation will serve his interests best by forgetting about the rear brake and correctly use as much front as you can. Honestly, looking at the vid again, the rider that hit the dog was toast no matter what. No time to do much at all before impact. |
