Try this one: "Mitrailleuse d'Appui General"

Fusil Automatique Leger = Rifle Automaic Light = Light automatic rifle.

Pronounced:
 Fusil = Fu-ZEE
 Autimatique = AutomatEE-kue (not exact - but best I can come up with...)
 Leger = Le-j-e (le as in leather)

Do I call my USP a "ooossp"? Do I call my AR and "argh"? Do I call my AK an "ack". No. FAL = "eff ay ell"

The dofference is that FAL makes an easy to pronounce word.

I say FAL, one word. I understand others don't, but because that's they way I pronounce it in my head while reading, I hate it when people right write "I just shot an FAL". It makes my head hurt.

We better get Alex Trebec in here.  He's a great pronouncer of  the French froggie language!

Correct. I've seen it pronounced on The American Rifleman TV show, and they spelled it out.

Also, it's Steyr "A-U-G" (ay yoo gee), not "og".

HMMWV

Pronounced by many as Humvee.

LAW (light anti armor weapon)

I could go on...

You could fill a book with military acronyms that are made to be pronounced like words.  Using examples like USP and AR-15, which obviously aren't meant to be said like words, is a pretty weak argument.

Except that FAL wasn't originally intended to be an Acronym.

I have read the Belgians pronounce like "fall". They invented it so they should know what you should call it.
