Got a wild hair this afternoon and decided to handload some more defensive ammo for my and my son's Glock 40s.  I used commercial 180grn Speer Gold Dots for a few mags when I first got my Glock to see how I liked them.  Our company guards use our range and they also used 180grn Speer GDs so I was able to pick up a fair amount of nickel plated Speer Brass for free which I use with a Speer Gold Dot, CCI primer, and Power Pistol powder to duplicate commercial GD performance for my SD ammo.

Anyway, I just finished handloading another 200rds in 28 minutes start to finish because I had my Dillon set up for 40s&w already as loaded up 1,200rds of it yesterday (see post this morning above).  Since it uses all Speer components and chronos at the same velocity (1025fps) it's a direct substitute for the commercial fodder with one single exception.  Looking on MidwayUSA's website this afternoon I found 40s&w 180grn Speer Gold Dots selling for $22.49 per box of 20 so I added 10 boxes to a cart, input my zip code to get the shipping cost and the total for 200rds came to $240.39 delivered to my door; or $1.202 per round.

I looked up my records for the delivered prices of the bullets, primers, and powder I used as I bought them some 4½ years ago (the brass was true 1st fired range pickup as I saw the guards fire it) and the total cost to me to handload the 200rds was $34.60; or 17.3¢ per round.  That means I saved $205.79 or 85.6% of the cost of 200rds of 180grn Speer Gold Dots!!  Best of all, my handloads are identical to the commercial product both in look and performance.

Did someone say that handloading wasn't economical???

I chronographed some of my 223 loads today with my PACT chronograph.  Things went good for a while  then they went south.  Erroneous readings (shy of max loads of CFE 223 w/ 55 JHPs at 1400 fps with a 16" suppressed barrel....I doubt it) , no stop signals.  I did all the voodoo that PACT explained to me during previous calls to them. IE shield the chronograph, have the signal lines separated,  plug the lines in, start first, stop second while chronograph is off, new battery, the only thing I didn't do is break some chicken bones and do a witch doctor dance.  I can say I never had a really good day with that chronograph.  It seems to be a very temperamental piece of equipment.  The timer works great!

I'll give it one more shot then I think I'll start looking into a CED M2.  I don't hear too many complaints about them.

ETA: Processed through the "sample" brass further documenting the process for the blog.

Tried out my "new" powder measure while loading some 300 blk.

After cleaning and coating with paste wax it worked very well indeed.

What powder measure is that?
An older Redding 3 measure I picked up at the last funshow.

I like Redding powder measures if the price is right.

Today I made 2 more powder baffles and started working on a new handle for the brown PM.

Can you tell me about how you made it better? I recently bought a Redding measure and I'm curious!

Ordered Powder, Primers and bought some locally as well. Didn't have to have it , but I don't feel like struggling and paying through the nose later. Be a Good Boy Scout, Be Prepared.

Bought some poder, primers, and some MTM boxes.  They were out of .223 projectiles though.  Going upstairs in a little while to get busy.

Bought 3 lbs. of 8208, 2 lbs. of Power Pistol, and a pound of H4350.

Also, 1900 CCI SP primers.

Loaded up 80 rounds of .38 Special and 90 rounds of .357 Magnum, both with Hornady's 158 gr. LSWCHP.

Bought an XDM9 4.5", too.

Just sorted the .45 brass I bought on the EE. Only 10% small primer brass. But I wont complain. I've got a ton of small primers to use!

Went by my LGS and picked up a lbs of 2400 and a lbs of Clays.
Grabbed the last 2 boxes of 53 gr V-Maxs they had.
Also picked up a like new 50 cal ammo can for $8 there.
They had primers which surprised me but were out of a lot of popular powders (H335, BC-2, HP-38, Universal and others) I learned after the 2008 election to stock up on all primers and rifle powder and have stayed stocked since then.

There was 3 different guys while I was there buying presses, dies and components to start reloading
Link Posted: 12/22/2012 10:22:07 PM EDT
Bought 338 dies, bullets, primers. At $4 each, I have to start reloading them if I want to keep shooting it.

Friday I finished up the pound of Unique I had on hand and loaded 320 more rounds of .38spl. Wishing I would have held on to some of the 5.56/.223 brass I've sold over the last couple years and learned to reload that round.

ordered 9# Varget powder and 800 bullets for my competition rifle. Also set up and calibrated my new GP 250 scale. Also building a small powder charging/weighing bench to go inside so the temp is more stable and can load more comfortably. My regular bench is in the garage

My son came home for Christmas last night and mentioned that he was a bit low on 45acp.  So, after we watched the Broncos beat the Browns I sat down at the bench and started a small batch of 230grn moly for him.  I got to cranking and the next thing I know it's time for dinner so I finished off the primers and called it a day.  600rds of 45acp in just under 53 minutes.  That makes 1,900rds of 40 and 45 I've done in the last few days, all of it spur of the moment and unplanned.

I ordered 9mm and 45 auto from them at the same time. The 9mm has come in, but not the 45. I called them, and the nice lady said "Oh honey, those packages get scattered all over the place, just give it a few more days."   I had to laugh.

So, I'm going to give it a few more days.

Prepped about 100 .223 cases, went go to reload some and my Pro Auto Disk was throwing .4-.5 variances after it was throwing consistently over about 8 drops.  Luckily I checked after the 3rd round I loaded.

Said screw it till another day plus I was freezing out in my garage

Going with possible static issues.

Getting close to finishing up 2,000 Shot 1x and 1,000 shot 2x brass in 30-06.   Decaped, sized, trimmed and inspected (2 more hours needed for remainder for inspection).  If nobody from the family shows up tomorrow,  I will be doing the same thing to about the same count of  .308's.

Merry Christmas

Just cut down about another 220 9x19Luger to 9x18MAK, that brings my total cut count to about 1000 or so.

Checked earlier in week, only MAK left was USA WB at $23 a box.  I reload them with Berrys plated for about $6-7 per box.

My bullets from PD showed up!  Now my stash is complete minus needing SP primers :(  I should have thrown some on my Grafs order last month I guess but I didn't need them at the time.

Lesson learned....never leave a hazmat tag unfilled.

I had to work today but my girlfriend had the day off. Came home to this.
250 prepped 223 cases. She cleaned the primer pocket, deburred the flash hole, swaged and trimmed!
This is coming from a 28 year woman that took her first shot a little less than a year ago! So proud

Looks like your girlfriend is a "keeper".
Darn right she sounds like a keeper!

I'm guessing most of the members of this sub-forum would be really happy to have a girl that would not only do that, but do it correctly!
