Yeah....

Total cost for the easy method (freeze plugs) is:

$30 D-cell tube

$20 front cap

$20 direct thread rear cap

$12 shipping

$10 freeze plugs (bought local)

Total: $92

Add the optional centering tool to mark the freeze plugs if you want. $20

Plus the $200 tax

Still no where near $400 TOTAL

how did you support the tube when punching it?  did it have issue punching the carbon steel tube?

screwed a few pieces of wood together, clamp it to the table and have a cedar shim to hold the tube tight.

cool. i am more worry about the internal support.  did you fully assemble it first and it was enough support to just punch it?  otherwise it seems like it would deform the tube and maybe put dents on it.

They were fully assembled.  The SDtac steel tubes punched without issue, the Apogee stainless seemed harder? and I smacked each stamp twice with the hammer and that deformed the tube a tad so don't go whaling on it.  I also tested first on a tube of equal thickness.

I would recommend having them engraved but with the amount I am doing and the SBRs I was not going to drop the cash.  And I do not care what my stamping looks like

I've come to like the look....

Whats the point in increasing your cost by 30-40% to have a nicer looking engraving on a $100 suppressor.

thanks for the picture.  They look fine to me.  i would be happy with it.  but i've read that if you drew a underline and spacing guides, it makes it much easier to align them.  ill have to try it to see if that method can get better results.

i wonder if one could use one of the Griffen QD Blast shield to make a QD model for an A2 Flash hider.... i'm just saying it sounds reasonable

dang lol.  hmmm maybe its worth to design a jig to aid this.  i have a 3d printer at disposal.  might as well test out different techniques.

AT first review the answer's NO.  There's too much play in the Blast Shield when attached; you would need to design a way to remove the play.

The video below illustrates the play (not mine).  The guy in the video thinks he can remove the play by tightening the tension bolts, but I'm told those don't adjust play on the gun, but rather tension for the release spring.

I'm not sure how you would build a jig for this, as the stamps can not be placed beside each other, the spacing is to much.  Also the letters on the stamps are not centered in the middle of the stamp, they vary, some are typically not "even" either, they are canted.  If you place them perfectly side by side you would still have what is pictured.

I've used 2mm (5/64") stamps and laser engraving so far.  The laser engraving was $9 per tube locally and looks perfect, paint it first then laser engrave and leave it or paint over it (painting first allows you add depth).  The stamps pretty much look like what is posted, except I used smaller letters, slightly above the legal minimum so they don't really show up after you stamp and paint them, you have to really look for it.  Somewhat concerning is how easy it is to engrave these tubes, doing either to a AR-15 andozied alumium lower really does not work, but it is simple to do on the steel pipe.  If you have the spacer material (steel and aluminum) from SD I would test there first), the first test I did I put a big indent into the steel tube.

I'm sure there are machine shops that would be cheaper for small parts like this; plus the design could be tweaked for easier machining.

Well, I blew the $100 budget a little bit...

Had a line on free-ish DMLS printing so I drew up a monocore to fit the Apogee tube.  The DMLS guys reviewed my model and said it would warp, but since they owed me a favor gave me some free-ish time on their 5-axis CNC!!!

This cost me $130; no idea how well it will work.  I won't be able to test it for 2 weeks or so.

Anyway, machined out of 304 or 316 stainless (I forgot which they had on hand).  I got to sit there for ~4 hours while the machine was setup, I pressed the button, and the cutting was done.  That was boring.

Well I already have the Apogee stainless tube and already had it bored out to 1.375" by a friend so at the moment I'm planning to use that.

To use anyone's Ti tubing would require more favors at a machine shop; don't want to ask for too much.

I'm not sure if that would meet the ATF's fluid definition of 80%, but I may be able to do that.   Anyone have thoughts on legality?  I hate to keep pestering my lawyer friend and not paying him...

muffling a blast is about splitting off different sonic frequencies and sending them into a deadend...

I like it. I like it a lot... curious how it will perform. did you use sonic modeling to come up with that profile...?

you definately have my focused attention with that one...

ETA.. no, I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn last night, but I did spend 27 yrs as a consulting engineer..
and that thing gives me wood.

BTW.. ya know how to keep a turkey in suspense.....?

To be honest, I sat and thought about how dye used to flow through some of my turbulence models in engineering classes.  Then I pictured the gas doing the same (since gas & fluid share properties like pressure flow) and thought about how to create as much turbulence and Eddie pools as I could.  I know the sound comes from the pulse of the high temp/pressure gas impacting stagnant gas so I attempted to provide some complex pathways to force the gas in.

I also didn't want any regular repeating features to prevent a resonant sound.

We should get SOME idea on performance soon; I emailed Vanquish the model file so he could run a flow simulation on it.

there are times when simply sitting and pondering the lint fuzz in your navel results in brilliance...

and sometimes a little booze in the mix allows one to release the "rules" we are taught in school.
the best engineers I have ever known just closed their eyes and rambled meaningless bullshit... then they changed the game.
being able to go to "that place" is something few understand.
as stated... I'm on point and awaiting more data.

Wow, i wish they have $9 engraving around Houston.  everyone wants $50+ over here.  The laser engraver wanted $80.

Awesome!  I'm definitely looking forwards to it; hopefully it's not a complete let down....

I'm not sure if that would meet the ATF's fluid definition of 80%, but I may be able to do that.   Anyone have thoughts on legality?  I hate to keep pestering my lawyer friend and not paying him...

I wish I could sell these things...

I've been told a production run on them would put the price in the $150 neighborhood, possibly closer to $100; but I can't think of anyway to legally sell them.

Cut the bore to the endcap and centerpunch it for the end user

Tried & true method of determining if something meets BATFE's definition of firearm.  Ship it to Tech Branch and request a determination letter.  Pity EP Armory didn't try that...
