I am going to start reloading, 223/5.56 to start and in the next couple months will get on to .300 blk. I am sure everyone is tired of the "what is the best reloading thingy?" Threads, but...

I am torn. Hornady has a free 500 bullet promotion going on, and rcbs has a $50 rebate on their kits. I am new to reloading, and am looking at the hornady lock n load classic single stage and the rcbs rock chucker supreme master reloading kit. Both look to b similar kits and are similarly priced. I have hard a lot of good things about the rcbs kits, but not much about hornady. Do they suck or does the 500 bullet promotion put them over the top?

Thanks for the input.

J

Ok. My question is, does hornady make a decent reloading kit? All I see people talking about are their lee and rcbs tools. I'm not asking what I need, just if their kit is crap or not.

I started with a Hornady single stage about 18 months ago. I've used it with 9mm, .357, 45 auto, .223, & .308.

It's a quality product. I don't have any first hand knowledge about the others.

I have a rcbs rockchucker and its a very well buit press. Cant go wrong with either IMO. Staging is key if you want to load in the timly manner. I would recamend a good hand primer over the press primer though. I size and deprime at 15 per min on the rockchucker. At that pace, i start getting a little tired around 500-600 rounds and have to take a break. I sized, deprimed and swaged 2000 rounds last weekend on it. If you get the rcbs, the swager dies set is something like $30. It works great if you keep the swager lubed.

+1 for the RockChucker kit. The only thing you need to buy separate if you want to reload rifle is a case trimmer. If you get their X-die sets, you only need to trim your brass once(if you don't mistakenly pick up someone elses brass)

I bought the RCBS rockchucker kit with the 505 powder scale, hand priming tool, and the uniflow powder measure.  I think it's on sale at Cablea's for $249.99.  Great kit with quality components.  Might take a look at the Lee classic turret press if you plan on doing bulk reloading.  Check out FSreloading.com as they have the best prices on LEE equipment.  You can't go wrong with a press from LEE, Hornady, RCBS, Lyman or Redding.  It all comes down to preference.  Good luck.

What I wish I wouldn't have done, is bought a kit. Mix and match, you'll get exactly what you want that way.

I wouldn't let the free bullets deal factor into your purchasing decision. They are nice to get but not worth nearly as much as Hornday leads you to believe. The street price of those bullets is much lower than their MSRP estimate. Plus there are free shipping and coupon codes routinely avaialble at many online retailers. Hornday makes you pay $15 to get the 500 bullets shipped to you. Plus, it seems to me that the selection of bullets to choose from is pretty crappy for each caliber, but I guess that might be different for other people.

$190 for the supreme kit? Jump on that deal! Pick yourself up a case trimmer if you want to for rifle brass and you are set! Ohh, obviously need to get dies and shell holders too

When you get your .223 dies, see if they have the RCBS X die, that way you don't need to trim your brass after each firing, only the first time.

Actually, I may have read it wrong. It might be 240 after the MIR. It's listed on their black friday ad. Sorry!
