Quick Q, when ordering a rifle from CMP, does the rifle get shipped directly to the purchaser(owner) or does it go through an FFL? Im a little confused . Thanks

I've never bought from CMP, but I've read here that if you qualify to buy from them, they'll ship it to your door. Now I have my own question that I'll post here instead of starting another thread. Can I walk into CMP with a DD214 and walk out with a rifle, or is something else required? |

Duh, I just googled DD214, I knew what it was, but didn;t knwo the form #, thats why I didnt recognize it. It depends on if you are retired or just separated I guess. If you are retired then I would think so. If you are just spearated then you still need to fill the requiremnt of being in a CMP affiliated club. |

Which leads to the question, why in the hell isn't Arfcom an affiliated club? Paying team members should qualify just fine. Jim |
the way you phrased that is a little misleading. surplus .22 training rifles go to your door step. commercial rifles (the anschutz that they're selling) are not surplus but are being sold at a negotiated price. You still have to be a member of an affiliated club. Also, a passport will work as well as a birth certificate. The DD214 only fulfils the part about showing marksmanship as will a carry license. www.odcmp.com/Services/Rifles/eligibility_requirements.htm |

I went to the South Store back in September with a friend of mine, a retired army warrant officer. It was his first time there, my second. We both met and spoke with the famous Mr. Orest Michaels. I was already in their system so all I had to do was fill out my order form to buy my guns. All he showed them was his military I.D. card and his birth certificate and he purchased a field grade Greek return. Military service fills the requirement for both "affiliated club" as well as marksmanship.  From the link you posted above: "In addition to shooting clubs, the CMP also has several special affiliates. Membership in these organizations satisfies our requirement for purchase. These special affiliates include: Congressionally chartered veterans' organizations such as the VFW, AL, DAV, MCL, etc. U.S. Military services (active or reserves), National Guard, to include retirees. Professional 501(c)3 law enforcement organizations and associations such as the FOP, NAPO, NSA, etc." One of the many benefits of serving your country!

You will need proof of citizenship and membership in a CMP affilliated club. You can join the Garand Collectors Association at the CMP store. So yes, basically you can walk in with your DD214, birth certificate and credit card and walk out with a rifle. |
Well, that's not the same as a "DD214 and a birth certificate", that was an actual CURRENT military ID. CURRENT MILITARY SERVICE fills both requirements, a DD214 does not. A retiree would also have a military ID to show. So, your statement of a "DD214 and a birth certificate" is still incorrect. |

LARRYG, I just got back from the CMP website and you are right; the DD214 does not meet the "affiliated club" requirement. Being retired military, I never had to join any club to buy rifles from the CMP. I just assumed the CMP benefit automatically extended to all veterans. It doesn't. I graciously concede to your superior knowledge in this matter.

You did too have to join a club to buy a CMP rifle.  The club you joined was the military, and only active duty and retired members of that club are eligbile to buy CMP rifles.
