Carried a M16A1, jumped a T-10, and wore a steel pot helmet. That should make me pretty old.

But I'm only 34. Some reason it just doesn't feel right. What outdated equipment have some of you other not-outdated-yet guys used?

You and me both, bro...I'm only 33, and BTDT on all that!

How about the old down-filled mountain sleeping bags (ACHOOO!!) or shelter halves?

The hip term for this is "Retro".  Seeing how some of the kids dress, you're never too young to be retro.

Shelter halves... there's one I hadn't thought of in a while. Guess that's because they sucked. Along the same lines, how about the heavy OD poncho's that smelled like mothball no matter how long they aired out?

I don't know if they are the same ones you're talking about but I like the mummy bags, except for they pack too big. I still have a couple I use for camping.

Shelter halves with snaps or buttons?  If you had one with snaps you're not even in the running...

OD wool M1951 winter fatigues.  I had a pair on my clothing record until '02.  Don't know how old they actually were; I signed for them, put them in my locker, and didn't touch them again until it was time to turn them in.

Should have "lost" my 1944-dated mess kit though...  A statement of charges, or a new one from the surplus store, wouldn't have eaten much into the profit I probably could have made off of a WW 2 collector.

My OD poncho and rain gear never smelled like mothballs.  They always had that bad-cheese/puke smell...

well I'm 40 I don't feel old but some would consider me to be!

I was issued a GM Hydramatic Transmission Division M16A1, and various Colt M16A2s over the years.
Carried a Colt M1911A1, M60, Dragon, AT4 at other times.
Signed for various M151s, and I also signed for Four M113A2s complete with 1 Ma Deuce each for my platoon, does that count?

Awesome.

I wore OG-107 wool winter uniforms, with an M1951 parka (nylon liner, tho - that 'frieze' liner was warm but heavy) with field pants at Fort Riley in the 1980s (my personal stuff).

Steel pots - helmet, parachutist's M-1C before brain pads and after.

M-151s with 16mm recoiless rifles in the weapons platoon.

M-1C and M-1D garands in the arms room for 'sniper rifles'.  The M-202 "FLASH" (couldn't shoot it because the rocket fuel dribbled down your back and set you on fire).

Being issued a GM Hydramatic M-16A1 with a chromed bolt and bolt carrier and a birdcage flash suppressor.  Being issued a Colt M-16A1 marked "AR-15".

M-1911A1s.

T-10s.

OG-107 cotton fatigues.

M16A1. Steel pot. C-rations. Green field jacket. Green poncho. Slant pocket "jungle" cammies. White T-shirt (with utilities). "Horse blanket" overcoat. Plastic rain coat. Wool "Alpha" uniform. Shelter half. Green flak jacket. Cotton canvas 782 gear. M7 bayonet/M8A1 scabbard.
Skyhawks and Phantoms ruled the USMC skies. Gama-Goats were cursed. Parris Island Recruits were received in white wooden barracks. Age didn't matter as long as you drank in the club. A Hummer was still a blow job.

I am only 23 and I was issued an M-16 that was recongigured to an M16A1. It did not have the raised area around the magazine release. You could see where the "A1" was stamped in different lettering after the "M16". It also had A2 furniture. The sights and barrel were all A1. This was only two years ago! And of course all the other things mentioned like shelter halves and TA 50 designed in 1950.
(I still qualified expert with that old ass rifle- proof that the design is solid and was 60 years ago.)
(I also learned why they added the raised area around the mag release- I lost about 10 mags lo crawling.)

I haven't had to deal with any XM16E1s or M16s with "A1" overstamps in the last few years.  And just about every Guard and Reserve unit has a '42 or so Frigidaire M2HB on hand...

But has anyone else been issued an _M1911_?  I drew one at Ft Meade back in the late '80s.  It'd been rebuilt at some point, but still had the original slide with M1911 sights and the longer trigger.  Probably been turned into a Kia by now...

OG-107s?  Wore them until they wouldn't let us anymore.  Most comfortable utility uniform ever, and $8/set at clothing sales.  Should have stocked up on them and I could make a fortune selling them to the collectors and re-enactors today.

Sweet!  They made those suckers right here in Charlotte, NC.  I think the old vehicles did more for the "old school" feel than anything else, at least for me.  I was assigned to a unit in HI that had NO vehicle newer that ca. 1960's.  The old five-ton meat wagons, deuce-and-a-halfs, and jeeps (LOVED the real jeeps) were a trip, as well as the Hueys and Cobras.  We'd do a field exercise in the same gulch where they filmed "Tour of Duty" episodes and I swear you'd look up and expect to see Charlie in the wire.

I still use a lot of my TA-50 for camping and hunting.  A woobie (poncho liner) in your fart sack is your best friend when temps drop close to zero!

Ahhhh,

This thread brings back a lot of "old Corps" memories. Joined in the early 80's and was issued two sets of the old poplin "cammies" and two sets of the "new" woodland ones that had the huge "Elvis" collars on them. First rifle was an GM Hydramatic M16A1, still had M1911A1 .45's and M60's. Still wore Steel Pots, the old O.D. flak jackets, M1951 "Deuce Gear", ate C rations and rode around, when lucky enough not to be humping, in M151's, Multi-Fuel Deuce and a halfs or Gamma Goats(yuck).

By the mid 80's it was transition time in the Corps and we got Kevlar helmets and flak jackets, NEW M16A2's the improved(yeah right) M60E3 and the first generation of the SAW. Along with the then new to the Corps but old to the Air Force Mk 19 (before the Mod 3). Most all of our Deuce gear was nylon and we were eating MRE's. The oldest weapon system still in limited use was the 106mm Recoilless Rifle mounted on Mules at GITMO which was a blast, literally to shoot.

Joined/went to work for the Army Reserves in the early 90's. Turned in our .45's for Beretta's and am seeing the transition from M16A2's to M4's. Some units still have M16A1's although they are beeing phased out for A2's or M4's. The "old" SAW's have been replaced for the new version and we have Mk 19 Mod 3 GL's mounted on HMMWV's, FMTV's or newer generation 2 1/2 or 5 tons with Automatic Transmissions and CTIS.

I've been in the system long enough to come full circle in that the first transition of "new" equipment I lived through is now the "old" equipment we are replacing with "newer" stuff. All this and I only just turned 40. But I suspect I'll get to see this new stuff become old too.

16 years ago tomorrow I enlisted (only 4 more till retirement had I stayed in-- now I feel old).

I was a 2531 field radio operator for the Corps, and commented yesterday that all I'd be qualified to do now would be to change the batteries in an ANG-39 set, but was informed that they don't even use them anymore.  Ah, well... I can still do the MOS every Marine is trained to do: 0100 Janitor.
At least in 1988 I had a brand spanking new M16A2, but my old unit had a nice mix of gortex and Korean vintage cold weather gear that first season. I understand they've been in the sandbox for some time now.  We got all dressed for the party in 1990-91, but were uninvited and dumped in the Philippines due to it only lasting 100 hours that time.

[By the way, yesterday was my swearing-in with a new unit (after being off contract for 8 years); the CWO doing the honors then told my GF I'd be leaving for Iraq within the year -- not exactly the news I wanted her to hear since I told her I was joining a USMCR unit. Didn't much care for being a civilain -- always felt like something was missing...]

So from the early 90's to now, it will be interesting to see how the Corps has changed.
Maybe new toys, but not much else I expect.

Cheers, Otto

Semper FI

I heard that they issue "Stress cards" in basic now that can be used if the trainee feels the D.I. is being a little too harsh -

I heard that presented as fact in a conversation recently and found it hard to believe. Unless confirmed I will consider it a groundless rumor.

That would seriously degrade combat training IMO, I can't believe the DOD would do something so stupid.

lets see...joined up in 2001...so here's the "Retro" stuff I've seen/been issued.

For a bare bones base exercise they did, they issued Steel Pots and the Vietnam hard plate flak Vests.

I'm the only officer on the base to still not have a Gortex jacket....my M-65 field jacket is just too comfortable to give up!

I was OPFOR helping the cops out here and got issued a M-16 that had been rebuilt from an A-1.  Damn thing was marked AR-15, had the selector saying Auto and had a FOUR digit serial number.

The Ranger Camp here (Camp Rudder) still issues M-14's for their OPFOR

I've seen that the cops here on base in their armory still have a M12 Winchester Trench gun...

PRC-77s are still out there.  And even older stuff.  I've got some VRC-46s on my hand receipt currently.  Supposed to be replaced by SINCGARS "any day now" but I've been hearing that since 2001.  Can't get the '46s repaired or properly installed, since they're "on the way out," so we make do with Motorola GMRS handhelds from WalMart and hope we'll draw something from at least the late '80s when we deploy overseas.

Hey great guy's ! Thanks a bunch for making me feel old too! But then again if you all didn't my wife would remind me daily . Well did anybody mention the M-79? Lets see when I was in the Corps , we had /were issued M-16 A1's, 1911's ( some were A1's , some weren't!) VietNam era M-60's,  so on and so on. The 16's upper and lower were so loose that you could literally point the barrell in one direction and the pistol grip in another . Oh well , I'm sure some WW1 vets would love to be our age. I did have a PRC-77 in the Marines but we were fielding the SINGARS when I was EAS'ing I have never had a rifle dated older than an M16A2, not even during my brief stay with the national guard.

The DoD really did the wrong thing when they adopted the M855 as a "5.56mm" round.  That's not the first time I've heard of troops with 1 in 12" rifles being issued M855, but at least the other screwups were in training situations where no one was at risk of anything worse than not qualifying.

The M855, M856, etc should have been adopted as "5.57mm NATO" just to prevent this sort of foul up.  The ANG unit probably went to an Army-run ASP and drew "5.56mm ball," and no one on either side even realized there would be a problem.

LOL the ENTIRE purpose for putting the green tip on M855 was so that exact thing would not happen (62gr M855 in a 1:12 barrel).

They probably dont even HAVE any M193 in theatre I'll wager.  Let's just hope that air guardsman never has to hit anything past 25 yards, and that a bullet travelling sideways will be able to pummel his target to death!

M16A1. Steel pot. C-rations. Green field jacket. Green poncho. Slant pocket "jungle" cammies. White T-shirt (with utilities). "Horse blanket" overcoat. Plastic rain coat. Wool "Alpha" uniform. Shelter half. Green flak jacket. Cotton canvas 782 gear. M7 bayonet/M8A1 scabbard.
Skyhawks and Phantoms ruled the USMC skies. Gama-Goats were cursed. Parris Island Recruits were received in white wooden barracks. Age didn't matter as long as you drank in the club. A Hummer was still a blow job.

+1

I loved those slant pocket cammies, the first generation of woodlands sucked horribly bad.

I still have my jeep operators license. At Parris Island I was issued an M-61A1 marked Colt Ar-15....
