I really gotta know. What in the world kind of shtf situation do you guys envision where you would need to stockpile thousands of rounds? It's good to be prepared, but some of you have enough ammo to supply the troops in Iraq for a year.
Is it some sort of Red Dawn situation? Are you going to be fighting off the advances of the Chinese or the Cubans? |
I guess I kind of come off rude in my question. I don't mean to. I'm really curious. Maybe there is some situation that I would need it. Just can't imagine one.
It is nice not have to run to the FunStore to buy ammo. I have enough ammo to allow me to shoot 1k a weekend for the next 15 weekends. I am always buying ammo.
Well, you see............Zombies require two to the chest and one to the head. Now accounting for how many Zombies there are out there and the expected rate of attack you........................
It is quite simple actually, prices on ammo rarely go down. It is best to buy it in bulk if your budget can afford it as a hedge against future price increases and/or shortages. This is particularly true of surplus ammo which can dry up over night.
It is also cheaper to order by the case. |
Hey, Which model Springfield do you have? That be my backup too. Springfield XD-40 Tactical. |
The local LE stopped gun/ammo sales during Hurricane Rita, too. Luckily I had a good stock of ammo. Plenty of people thought I was stupid/weird before it hit. Afterwards was a different story however. TS |

Arrgh...tough question for sure. Yeh...ammo is only going up. I remember when quality 5.56 was $.15 ea. OK to stockpile if your wife approves, or doesn't know. In a SHTF situation, my opinion is that you are only going to be able to expend a certain number of rounds before you are "toast". Dunno what that number is, but say it is a few hundred. After that the exercise is a waste. Guess I am a bit fatilistic about end of the world/SHTF scenarios.
I am fighting the hoarding instinct. Ammo isn't gonna get you to Heaven. That said...I still want more. dvo |
1) In the event of a serious disaster, ammo supplies may dry up for a long, long time. A true SHTF situation will outlast me.
2) It's cheaper. Prices keep going up. Buy as much as possible as soon as possible. 3) It's conceivable that ammunition for our guns could be banned if bad things happen politically, so buy it while you can. I also keep buying magazines as much as possible for this same reason. If I never use it, I can pass it on to the next generation. 4) It's cool to look at a big pile of ammo crates. |
When you have a "few" guns and all of them need to eat on a regular basis it makes sense to do your grocery shopping in bulk.
Its not a stock pile , its a investment!
But seriously , ammo really never goes down ,and its on a trend upwards historicly. Might as well keep some back. Some people keep 10k-20k rounds onhand. I might not ever go through that ammount in my life , but for some people, thats only a couple of hours worth of fun. I really wish my ammo stores were higher than they are right now.......someday :) |
The situation I would need it for is if it suddenly became unavailable to buy. An unlikely scenario but one that I will be prepared for should it ever happen. |
What exactly do you consider a stock pile? When we go out to shoot we may shoot off 2000 to 5000 rounds in an afternoon of various calibers which makes 10 or 20K stockpile look pretty small.
How the hell do some people here eat and shoot? Even with cheap stuff you are talking 5000 rounds being about $600.00 for an afternoon. How often can you shoot that much? Is the place you work for hiring? I'm not trying to be an ass.... I just envy you! |
I used to think 1K was a heck of a lot of ammo. "Man, I'll never shoot this much up in 10 years". Then I started going to the range on a regular basis and went, "Man, I'm OUT, I can't believe I shot it all up, I must have some more somewhere".
You'd be surprised how much ammo you can go thru when you can walk out back and go shooting. Needless to say, brass piles up quite fast. |
Maybe I'm just jealous that I can't afford that much.
Here's all my shtf ammo. 25 Blackhills 75gr Heavy Match hollows. But If the S*** Does hit the fan, can I hang out with you guys? http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f381/mbumgarnerii/mystockpileMedium.jpg |
We went thru 13-15K in 4 hours last fall at a private shoot. Every time my son and I go to the range anymore we burn at least 1K of ammo, sometimes more. FALs, Garands, ARs, m14s, and of course the 1911. |

in true arfcom fashion, BOTH! |
Here are my reasons
1) It's a pain in the ass to run to the gunstore/walmart/dicks when you want to go to the range and find you have no ammo. 2) it will never be cheaper (this applies to everything) 3) SHTF? Who knows what could happen. Could be Katrina, could be Red Dawn, could be Mad Max. I'm an Eagle Scout, and I believe in being prepared. 4) ATF did a study during their Reign of Terror under Klinton, and they decided the most effective way to control firearms (read: disarm those opposed to socialism) was to cut off the supply of ammo as most shooters do not keep very much on hand. Go after the ammo mfgrs, as well as cut off the pool of reloading supplies. Ask the older gents here about the primer famine of 1994. |
That's the point. If liberals take over, it could be impossible to get what we want.

BUY ALL YOU CAN!
They are itching to bann all M193 types/M855 for civis so stock pile up! No Im just joken around! I try to keep just about 1000rds for storage and thats in case I cant find any. I do keep 2 bandoliers each of 77/75Black hills for SHTF wich will never happen !! But when CHARLIE CAME it was nice to have my Shorty with lots of ammo! Tropical Storms is when SHTF for me! |
Maybe you should sell the printer and table and buy more ammo and mags. |
I agree......I remember the Clinton primer scare, too, so now there are 10,000 of each type of primer stored in a cool dry place on the property!
With the prospect of the other Clinton looming on the horizon as a candidate, I'm thinking about hidden storage areas, MREs, ammo, doubling the ammo and primer count, freeze-dried lawyers, etc..... |
I evacuated for Katrina and took all my ammo(3000 rounds) with me. While I was up north, I made it a point to go wal-mart jumping and bought another 1800 rounds between various wal-marts. I just wasn't sure what I was going to come back to 2 days after the storm. |
How about the real world scenario where certain types of ammo I prefer gets hard to find and more expensive to buy when I do find it. That's all the reason I need to get as much as I can when I find it for a good price and stockpile ammo so I always have some on hand when I want to go shooting. Keeping a nice stock of ammo for all your guns is never bad thing... |
Can you please share pics of your stash? I mean hell, after seeing all the mags you have..... I could only imagine what you got in ammo. |
Here is where I tell you about my tragic boating accident. Actually, I sold most of my ammo to my buddies when I moved to FL. It was easier than moving it all. |

Once you own an Evil Black Rifle, ammo whoring is sure to become your obsession. There is no cure. Just go with the flow. I'm not as bad as some - I keep a reserve of about 1.8K of quality M193, and the rest of my .223 is plinking ammo (Wolf mostly). That doesn't account for the fact that I have many other calibers to feed. The only caliber I feel "safe" in is 8mm. I've got 1400 rounds for two bolt-action rifles, so unless I buy a 1919 with an 8mm kit, I think I'm safe. 7.62x54R has become a problem ever since I bought the FPK. I need to order more. Don't even mention the fact that I only have one case of 5.45. .308 I'm OK with about 2500 rounds.
Point is - I'm always scouring the net for a good deal. There are some serious ammo whores around though. Talk to FALARAK - he just got another 10,000 rounds of Guatemalan delivered yesterday. |
You're not imagining hard enough!! Do you do much shooting? If you do much shooting, then you'd know how easy it is to go through a few hundred rounds in just an hour or two at the range. In a hostile environment with tons of aggressive bad guys, you'll go through the ammo even faster. A few thousand rounds is NOT that much. My politically incorrect list of potential bad guys: The Chinese The illegals who want to make my state part of Mexico again. Our peace loving Muslim "friends" All those angry tuff jigga thugs. and of course zombies and aliens. |
1) Ammo never goes down in price. 2) A gun without ammo is a fancy club. 3) importation can be cut off wth the stroke of a pen. 4) you won't be able to get any/enough if you wait til there is a disaster going on - the first thing the govt does is make selling guns/ammo illegal.
5) having lived through the primer famine, and continual cries by Moynihan and his cronies to put huge taxes on ammo, I vowed to never be at their mercy again. It's nothing to go through 500-1000 rds in a day long shooting session. |
This is as good of a response as I've seen. There's no reason not to keep a good stash of ammo. You never know when surplus ammo will be something we only talk about when we mention the "good ole days". |
My SHTF situation is an ammo ban or importation restriction. Theres a serious russian ammo shortage right now, why dont you ask those guys who are sitting on 10 or 12k rds of 762x39 if they regret "stockpiling"?
This is really a pretty lame question. You obviously dont do much shooting. |
Im also glad I bought extra XM193 and Q3131/Q3131A back in 2001
And I bet a whole lot of guys are Glad they STOCK PILE UP Q3131A/XM193 Look now its hit and miss at the stores now!TRY LOOKING For 2006 headstamp Q3131 or FedXM193 And if you Want Factory Fresh m193 thats not seconds then theres WOLF M193 wich has had bad reports although I hadnt had any trouble . But I only shot 8 mags of the stuff |
Don't forget Bird Flu. If a real pandemic materiailizes (however unlikely), a lot of police won't be going to work just like in New Orleans. |
Yeah, I could just keep my computer on the floor. Or no, I'll sell my computer and house too. Then I can live under a bridge with all my ammo and my AR. Will you come visit me and bring me meals? Make sure you identify yourself as an ar-15.com member, or else I'll shoot. |

sombody ban this |

You'll know the ARFCOM members because they will be living in their brass Houses. Screw Glass. |

If I had the money, I'd probably shoot a couple thousand a week. I love to shoot. I probably spend about $20 a week for the Walmart Winchester stuff. That's all my budget allows. |
Huh? For what? |

Good point, it is an INVESTMENT. I look at it this way, my Southern Ammo is Bullion, and my Q3131 Winchester is Collector Grade - Hee Hee. Oh, it's time to get more Bullion, Hillary will be in the Whitehouse soon!! Quick, stock up everyone, you're gonna wish you did once RFID is on every round! With that in mind the Q3131 is premium ammo, but would be tagged befor any 70's and 80's Southern surplus ammo. |
