THat's right, I thought it was a type-o too.

I work at a medium siuzed gun shop in GA and received information today that a S&W MP15 will be shipping in April. TALO is making this gun. For those of you unfamiliar with TALO they make custom runs of firearms. Their website is http://www.taloinc.com/ and no new has been posted.

Specs [I got all of this off of my sales flyer, so don't crucify me]:

Model: MP15R
Cal: 5.45*39
Rounds: 30
Barrel: 16" [unknown contour]
Twist: 1 in 8
Front Site: M4
Length: 35/32 Extended/Collapsed
Stock: 6 Pos M4
Weight: 6.5 lbs
BBL: 4140 Steel
Receiver: 7075 T6 Aluminum Receiver
Other: Chromed Comp: BBL Bore, Gas Key, Bolt Carrier, Chamber

While I am not offering to sell these [MODS, I am offering this post for information purposes only.] Retail should be somewhere around $920-1000.

It appears as though uppers will also be available for around $600 or so.

If your dealer is hooked up with Camfour, Hill Country or anyone else who can get TALO guns [a list of wholesalers is available on TALO's website] then they should be able to get one.

Again, I am NOT Selling these on Arfcom.

This is gonna be awesome, time to stock up on the 5.45.

What mag will it use? I wonder how the gas system will be affected when the corrosive ammo is used too?
Link Posted: 3/17/2008 7:11:57 AM EST
I tried 5.45 in a standard AR-15 mag this morning and it fit and fed [by hand].

As far as the gas tube goes, I don't know. It seems that they chrome lined everything else.

Interesting. Might have to spend my $600 Uncle Sugar check on this.

Any photos?

The only one that I saw [it was a fax copy, and really grainy] It looked like a standard M4 style 16" Flat Top without a Carry Handle or BUIS.
This is as close as I can find [again, no BUIS on the ad that I was sent.]:

Are there any stores that will carry the uppers and rifles or are they only available through distributors special order?
Link Posted: 3/21/2008 9:55:38 AM EST
It's up to individual stores if they want to carry them or not.

I will be stocking these for my customers but I recommend that you ask your local FFL dealer about them. Again, Camfour and Lipsey's will both be stocking this gun/upper. Those are distributors that your FFL Dealer should be able to get product from.

If you have a very hard time let me know and I may be able to work something out- maybe I can find a TALO dealer near you or something. I do not want to openly sell these on arfcom because I do not have a dealer account here and really don't have the time to sell here and maintain listings.
I do respect the dealers here and that is why I am not trying to pimp stuff, especially in the Technical threads. This thread was more of heads up for all of the people who have been waiting for a 5.45 upper.

I am curious about pricing on the upper. I had assumed these are not chome linned barrels and chambers but I am pleased to see I was wrong...

No offense Bryan, but you've been a very bad influence on me and my CC. First the Arsenal 106u, then the 107u, now you've got this and the gsg5s.

I have an origanial AA barrel but have had little sucess with the GI, H&K, British or type 56 mags I have tried. If these "blue followers" will allow regular mags to gun with someting close to full capacity there is a market for them. If yoiu could find and informaion on them we would apreicate it.

How does this differ from the Genghis that Alexander Arms used to manufacture?

If I recall correctly, it was designed to use cheap ammo, but the magazines were always the issue with it. Some worked, some didn't.

Then everyone decided the 6.8 was the bees knees and Alexander went on to the 6.5 and voila! No more Genghis and now, all of a sudden, someone else is marketing it.

I think it's cool to have another alternative, but wonder about the mags still.

I'm beginning to think that if the mags aren't SPECIFICALLY designed for the cartridge, then they don't work consistently, thus the 6.8/6.5 issues that developed with the development of the CP mags and the stock aluminum mags with those two calibers. New followers help, but didn't solved the problem until the issues with the mags were ironed out.

Rumor is that Cp is making the mags or using there standard mags and new follower

If the mags are the 'same' as regular mags, will you have a line on followers for those wishing to purchase them to convert mags for use with this caliber?

It isn't a total loss as MGI is supposed to be developing an AK74 magwell for their lower.

I found that the cartridge rim of a 5.45 case would catch on the stripper clip guide indentations on a standard mag, I'd be interested to know how they are getting it to work with a standard AR magazine.

I just did a little test. I don't have an upper to try and hand-cycle, so I did the highly scientific, try-to-feed-with-your-fingers, test.

Standard GI mag- no worky. As Gamma762 noted, the rims of the rounds get stuck on the rear-most groove in these magazines, and they stick well.

Magpul Pmag- no such grooves as the GI mags have, but the rounds align such that the tips are pointing downward. The top round will not feed as it hits the inside of the mag body. Probably needs at least a different follower and who knows what other mods to run correctly.

PRI 6.8 SPC Mag- This one works! At least by hand. I got it to take 29 rounds and could manually strip the rounds out. My guess is that C-products is using their 6.8 mag, or maybe their 6.5 mag with a different follower, as the rear-most groove does not snag the case's rim on the way forward.

If I have a chance this evening, I'll snap some pictures.

I might, as then I wouldn't have to clean as much crap off the BCG and all after shooting. I'd already have to clean the hell out of the bbl either way, so vented corrosives wouldn't be a problem (at least in theory).

I'm wondering what it will be like at the gas block, as they aren't chromed, and, typically, AR users don't pull the tube out of them to clean after every range trip.
Link Posted: 3/30/2008 4:57:31 PM EST
You can run balistol down the gas tube then blow it out with an air compressor, or that keyboard air spray aerosol stuff, it aint no thang.

I don't see why not. You'd just have to make sure you use your 5.45 bolt.

ETA: To me this is the ideal setup....a Piston upper...maybe SBR it and run it off 5.45....it could be lots and lots 'o fun...not to mention 5.56 cans work w/ 5.45....5.56 = .23 while 5.45 = .21

W/ that said...keeping the can from corroding may be a bitch and you better get one that you can remove/unscrew the baffles.

Yeah, if it used a piston system and AK74 mags, it would be an AK74.

Neat idea. If it works with GI AR mags, even w/a new (less than $5 each) follower, I will most likely be in.

See my post above- Standard GI Mags don't work.

I just pre-ordered mine with AIM. They are only coming with one mag not two according to the salesman.

Yes. Its sort of a caliber intended for piston guns anyway right?

I put about 100 rounds of the ammo I got from you guys through my upper on Thursday, and then intentionally didn't clean it to see what it would do to the barrel and piston system.

Happily, there are no signs of any corrosion anywhere. Barrel is a stainless Lothar Walther that was GunKoted black.

The breakeven point on paying for the upper in ammo savings is 5,500 rounds.
(15 cents for 5.45 vs. 25 for 5.56)

Not sure what the attraction is.

where are you getting your numbers from? a standard A3 upper is around the $500 mark. so for $80 more you get a gun that fires ammo that is $120 per 1080rds instead of the $250-300 per 1000rds. and by my calc(which i could be wrong) your looking at .11c a rd for 5.45 not .15c.
