The AR came in a cardboard box, with bubble wrap and a basic, run-of-the-mills gunlock, as well as a gen 3 pmag. First impression was that it was very light.
After setting it up with some of the accessories I had accumulated, just some Magpul BUIS, a Magpul K2 grip, a Magpul M-Lok AFG and a lancer 20 round magazine. One of the major things I planned on installing was the Thordsen Customs buffer tube kit, which required a new buffer tube to be installed.
The pistol looked nice, the round fore end was light, and comfortable and the top rails matched up almost perfectly. One thing I was surprised to see was an Ergo Grip installed instead of the standard A2. This was a nice unexpected upgrade. One thing I did notice was aluminum specks imbedded in the lower receiver, something I have read is an issue when completing your own 80% lower. Maybe these cheap ARs use “blemished” parts, either way, it doesn’t look like there are any serious visual defects. One thing I did notice that I didn’t know is that the fore end has round holes in a couple different places and these holes are made to accept quick release sling buttons.
When installing the new buffer tube, I did notice that the castle nut was almost hand tight, no Loctite and not staked (I am glad it wasn’t). I replaced this buffer tube with a standard commercial buffer tube in anticipation of installing the Thordsen Kit. The buffer and spring worked fine with my replacement buffer tube and I had no issues installing it. I did however have to slightly sand the piece of plastic that secures the Thordsen cover to the buffer tube in order to fit properly. After that was installed it was a solid piece and I was very happy with my choice.
