Hi all,

I've been reading here for a few weeks and decided to join in. I'm 45, married, from Memphis, the hell hole on the Mississippi.

I bought a Colt SP1 AR15 from my Uncle's estate. I think it was built in '82, but it's got round front grips instead of the triangular. I don't think Colt switched to the round ones until '86. The serial # is 1828XX.

Here's a  few pics so you guys can tell me a little more about it.

Nice rifle, it will be easy for you to switch the round handguards with delta handguards, then your covered.

Also change out the aftermarket pistol grip for an original A1 pistol grip.

Nice rifle by the way.
I think you're off on the date.
I think it is late 70s.

Hey is that an early ejection port door?
If so, that is pretty cool.

+1

That grip is fugly.  It's still a very nice rifle, but put an A1 grip and A1 handguards on that and it will be a thing of beauty!

I'll start looking for the delta grips too. If anyone finds a set, please let me know.

Welcome to the Retro forum Jeff!  Good looking SP1.  You've got the grip covered.  A set of triangle handguards and a 20 round magazine and she'll be back to the original configuration.

Welcome Jeff!

If you're looking for some retro 20 rnd mags  [marked 223] I found some near you a couple months back. Army surplus/gunshop on the East side of I55 just above where I 40 goes West.
On the service road, look for the old military vehicles.

Today I ordered an A1 pistol grip and triangular handguards to restore my SP1 to it's original condition.

When I inherited the SP!, I also received an ammo can with about 20 or so mags of different sizes and makes. One of the mags is an actual grey colt 20 rounder.hould

I'll get some pics up soon with the new hardware.

I should have the parts on Wednesday. I can't wait to get the rifle restored!
