"...having been built in .30-06 and NATO 7.62 calibers.

ArmaLite has developed a twenty round magazine for use in the AR-10.Made of a non ferrous alloy, the magazine weighs only four ounces.Due to the substantial weight reduction of the ArmaLite magazine. The rifleman can carry one hundred rounds of ammunition in loaded magazines (disposable if desired) for the same weight as required for the hundred rounds with one steel magazine and the necessary stripper clips."

This AR-10 prototype, the X02,was already using the waffle magazine design.

Take a note that as this is a early magazine, made to be used with this AR-10 prototype (X02),the slot is at the rear of the magazine, and not in the left side as used from the AR-10B.This rear slot early waffle magazine was used with the X02 and X03 (AR-10A) prototypes as the magazine catch was front of the trigger to catch the magazine from the rear (the same with the X01 BAR magazine).

"The rear wall has a projecting portion which is slotted as at to provide means for engaging locking mechanisms (not shown) which hold the clip securely in the gun (not shown). "

The same ones can be seen in the 010 Armalite AR-10 Presentation, but in better quality detail, also brochure images of the other prototypes (X01 and X03 AR-10A),also a drawing concept representation of the X03 AR-10A as one can see that in the original concept it was to use the same type of dust cover used in the X02 (the one in the image),in reality it as the frame over the left side but no dust cover was ever used.

010 Armalite AR-10 Presentation

"12 pages from the Armalite Corporate presentation on the AR-10 (identified as a part of Fairchild with a Los Angeles address). Overview of AR-10A (3 pages with pictures). Economy of Manufacture. Simplicity of Takedown. The Straight Stock Principle. The AR-10 Automatic Rifle. The Original Prototype (BAR magazine). The Second Model. General Description AR-10B. Heavy Barrel. Bipod LMG Model (crude sketch only)."

AR-10. ArmaLite hand out, from a photocopy.   This is a promotion of Eugene Stoner’s “AR-10 Number 2” which is in 1955.   The basic ideas of the AR-10 are forming.

Later on,with the ArmaLite AR-10B,the "projecting portion which is slotted as at to provide means for engaging locking mechanisms" was changed to the left side.
