Sorry, I tho't my point clear.  The Ruger seemed to be fond of M855 but the Smith obviously does not like M855.  Two 10-shot groups rested at 25 meters ginning up 4.367 MOA VS. ten shots from an unsupported position at 200 meters that went UNDER 2 MOA.  The ammo used at 200 is my standard load I use for bait shooting and whatnot.  It is very accurate in every rifle I've used it in {AR's and bolt}.  Really, most groups fall over 2 MOA when I shoot them from an unsupported position at 200 {<2 MOA from an unsupported position at 200 is really good and rare shooting, if I do say so myself}.

The disparity between the Ruger and the Smith with the GI ammo is stark.  A better test would be 3 10-shot groups, but what is here is interesting enough.

Had a couple projects to run at the range today.

First up is a new build.
Ballistic Advantage 16" Stainless Hanson Barrel
KAC Rear Micro 200/600
Magpul Pro Front
Fiocchi 55gr Ball ammo
.862" 10 round group. Not too shabby!
Had to get the irons zeroed before mounting the 1-6x optic on a non QD mount.

Second up.
My old M4gery finally got squared away with a new Maetek rear sight.
Nice upgrade from the magpul plastic buis.
Had to sight it in.
55gr IMI 5.56. That stuff is hot!

Haha, good eye!
I was actually smashing on it lastnight a bit.
I'm gonna square it away at some point in the near future.
I keep getting hung up on newer projects though.
Seems like my rifles are reproducing inside my safe at an extremely high rate!

Great post savagemann, nice shooting!!!!

So you like a matech better than magpul mbus eh?
12/25/2017 1:14:43 AM EDT
[#7]
Thanks JJ.
I do like it better than the plastic mbus.
I mostly went with the Maetek so the M4gery would be closer to the real thing.
Otherwise, I really like the Magpul Pro buis.
The KAC Micros are great too....but kinda spendy for new ones.
Best bang 4 your buck is Magpul Pro F&R.
I have them on several rifles.
Almost all of my rifles have optics and I only put the buis on for backups.
I don't normally shoot irons.
I literally install irons, zero them, then put my optic on.
Every year or so I will test the irons just to veryify zero.
After shooting irons a couple times in the last few weeks participating in your challenge, I think I'll practice them more often.
I used to be much better using them when I practiced often.

That is great shooting.

RE: Matech sights by the way, I like them as well tho I've read that some have said the mechanism can fail tho I am not sure if that is supposed to occur from abuse which could damage any sight, or just from use of the adjustments over and over again.    I also have the MBUS and the KAC with the latter being my favorite.  For years I used a carry handle in my survival kit for my scoped rifle on my skitreks.  A zeroed cutdown carry handle in a pocket works too, or on the gun if it isn't in the way of the optics.

They've come up a bit.  I bought one for my wife and one for a priest friend of mine.  They are good solid rifles though they lack a barrel treatment/lining.

Thanks EVR.
I'll have to keep an eye on my Matech mechanism.
A good combo is KAC 200/600 micro rear and Magpul Pro front.
I seem to remember Hijak86 on youtube runs that as well. Learned it from him.
I don't have a KAC front sight as they are really expensive and are hard to find a deal on.
I usually buy "seasoned" KAC rear micros off ebay. They can be found cheaper than a Magpul Pro rear if you're patient.

Yeah, great shooting!!!! Nice rig too.

I was going to tease you about how it's not THAT cold .  But you get a gold star for being out there in colder weather than you're used to.  I wasn't prepared to go out and shoot since it was like 1 degrees here and the wind chill was approx -12.  But it's all relative.  I've shot in the 20's or so.  But I typically just won't go if it's in the negatives or 0.  I can only be out for a few moments and it's just not worth it.  I don't really like shooting pistols with gloves......  Rifles are fine though, besides loading the mags.

Went out to zero a couple optics today, so I took advantage of the time to shoot a group with Irons from each rifle.

First up, 14.5" Painted spikes upper on a UCWRG fde lower.

Tried a new stock from strike ind today. Kinda heavy.

Fiocchi 55gr bulk/loose range pack. I swear the 50ct packs shoot better.
Brass looks different between the 2 types.

Decent group for Irons. About an inch I think. Maybe a hair under.

First group after optic zero.

Next up is one of my lightweight-ish builds.
16" Ballistic Advantage basic mid length lightweight profile.
Same 55gr bulk ammo.

These 2 groups were done in the same string of fire. Iron group first.
I don't like the Irons on this rifle.
They are UTG Pro Metal sights.
Not the best sight picture.
Will upgrade to a KAC 200/600 rear and Magpul Pro front.

1/8/2018 12:37:46 AM EDT
[#15]
What about them do you not like?
1/8/2018 12:43:52 AM EDT
[#16]
It's just something with the sight picture.
It seems a little too large, even with the small apature, and the shape of the front ears seems a little odd.
They've been bouncing around builds as I've upgraded.
They were cheap, around $45, so good value though.
Prefer a tighter sight picture.

It isn't an issue if you adjust the stock all the way out, but I've been running them in a bit closer.
LOP of the magpul moe fixed approx.
With the new Cali assault weapon ban, we will need to have all of our stocks fixed. No more telescoping or folding stocks.
So I've been trying to get used to running them all at a standardized LOP to match the build in the first picture.

The rear ears are thinner and the aperture body isn't as wide, allowing more light around the sight - probably more of a ghost ring effect.

The front ears are taller, perhaps just taking more prominence in your eyes.

What are you saying brony?  The aperture looks wider and blockier than if it was an actual A1 or A2 aperture.  That's the thing I don't like about the magpul sights.  Especially the PRO's.  The rear ap is this huge block that in my opinion obscures the target.  You're looking through the hole but the AP is still in your eyesight and blocks a lot of the light and surrounding areas.  Which is why I really like a ghostring.  It's barely there.  But obviously not as accurate as a smaller ap.  But having said that, an A1 or A2 ap isn't a block.  It's round and blocks less of the sight picture than Magpuls and this one too, it seems like.....
1/8/2018 7:06:06 PM EDT
[#21]
Functionally, I doubt the sights differ. I think most people have a lack of practice or need a better prescription.

Assuming the aperture diameters and post widths are within 0.005", if I put each brand on a NM "A4" and shot from prone on the MR-31 target, groups would probably be within 0.5 MOA of each other. The "brighter/bigger" sight picture will probably have more elevation dispersion.
1/8/2018 7:14:59 PM EDT
[#22]
I hear ya, I'd just rather be able to see the target and what's going on around it better for more self defense type stuff.  I don't get why they want to block your whole eyeball out except for what you see down the ap.

Like this one especially.  But the pro isn't much better.  The MBUS isn't too bad but still wider than an normal A2 circular ap.  Because it's squared off.....

Just put this rifle together, FN upper, 14.5 Voodoo barrel, A1 stock,  top target 62gr silver bear, bottom target 62 gr Radway Green early 90s nato ammo.  Fired from the prone on elbows resting on a rock.  I think I can tighten this up nicely.

I didn't measure.  I will when I get them tightened up off a rest.

I haven't had any problems with the rifle buffer.  I ran Wolf, silver bear , rorg, imi, federal 193, some Guatamalan surplus, and Fiochi 62gr.  Using a Sanchez mag, Okay, Center, Colt 20rd and a Pmag.  No failures of any kind.  I was pretty happy!

Nice out today, so I thought I'd try it again.  Measured out just over 80ft.  Firing prone supported with rock and a blanket for a rest.

Rifle is a midlength 14.5 Voodoo pinned barrel with a homemade lower with mixed extra parts.

1st 10 were Federal 193 55gr

2nd were Colt Bear Ammo 62gr

3rd 20 were Wolf military classic 55gr

Well that "bear ammo" looks like it groups decent in your gun.  I never heard of it though.  Colt Bear.  Hmmmm.....  Is it steel cased?

Great entry.  Looks like you're right in line with everyone else.  Nice tight group with ammo your gun likes.  And some meh groups with meh ammo.  We have very similar results. Although I think my biggest group was bigger than yours yet.

I wonder if people are getting the picture as to what to expect????

That bear ammo is zinc plated steel case.  It has a Colt logo on the box.  I got it a while ago because it was stupid cheap. I was shocked to see it so tight. I have to see what it does farther out.   The Federal stuff was marked LC 92 with the Nato stamp.

Here are 2 groups from this same rifle with a 6x optic at 100 yards using 68gr reloads.
I know it's not 25 yards, but puts into perspective how ammo and optics make a big difference on the same rifle.
I know the rifle would group even better with more powerful and cleaner glass. It is an inexpensive PA 1-6x gen 1 optic.

I never loctite sights.  I move stuff around too much for that.

I almost got out this weekend but ran out of time.  It was warm for up here.....   I'm hoping to go Friday.  And shoot the 20" A2.

For some reason my pics weren't showing earlier.  Looks like they are fixed now.

Man, I've really been wanting to build a 20" A2.
Maybe I'll make that my next project.

It took about 1000 rounds for those sights to come loose without loctite.
I used to move parts around on builds a lot, but got into the habit of not doing so in the last couple years.

I think the 2 stage trigger helps me more than I think it does....  LOL.  I did get lazy and just did it off of the table instead of going prone.  It was kind of wet and since I turned 46 this month, I took the easy way out.    That table is high, so I was standing behind it.  Not sitting.

All I could muster today was 5 and 6 moa.  If I didn't pull one shot I would've had 3 moa with XM193.  My bad.

Good shooting JJ. I'm loving that rifle.

Thank you.  Yeah that one doesn't have one.  Which is what I meant.  I might do a little better if it did.  LOL.  Maybe not though.  That trigger is particularly heavy.  I don't really mind it.  But it's like 7 pounds.  Was over 8 when I first got it.

But this gun, if I just flip to the big ap and bang away at clay pieces on the berm quickly, it hits where I'm aiming.  At least at 30 yards or so......    It's a lot of fun to shoot.

25 meters with
7 inch DPMS 1/9 chrome lined barrel, DPMS upper, ebay $15 sights, Rock River registered lower.  It did really nice with the IMI 62gr nato stuff, that was the last group I shot.  The forward assist literally fell apart and jammed the bolt carrier to the rear.  Luckily there were no zombies after me!

Nice shooting!!!  Nice little blaster.

I think in Molon's attack of the M193 clones thread he shows IMI  M855 to be the most accurate of the M855 and M193 he tested.......  I saw the stuff on sale at midway for .26 cents.  I may have to get some.....  I usually just buy M193 and cheap 55 grain.  But I may have to keep buying some M855.  Every once in a while I see it for a good price.
