Thank you akethan for the clarification!

Did you account for inches to MOA?  A 1.622" average at 50 = 3.244" at 100 / 1.047 = 3.098 MOA.

Sorry about the mayonnaise, guys.

Yeah I do believe, I went grease ring to grease ring, subtracted 0.224, added up and divided by 5.

(Inch x yards) x 100 = MOA
(1.622"/50)x100
0.03244x100 = 3.244

That's following the formula as posted?

I know it looks like a three shot group, but I know for 100% fact I put five rds into that target. Here is a picture of the target while it was still posted, every other round is accounted for. The .223 rds in the left target are from zeroing earlier.

Had a warfighter stop by with his fresh shooting skills and new-to-us eyes ....

I asked him to indulge us and take the 308 bolt gun (we had introduced at the Shot show Demo Day in Vegas) out back and shoot some groups.

He said  "it's the most consistently accurate rifle he'd ever had the pleasure of shooting".

Doesn't count because not five 5-shot groups, (but in best Arnold voice) I'll be back.

I took the pic in the shade ... that's why it looks blue.  Shot off bipod, but with leather rabbit-eared bag.

5-shot groups across the top = .610 moa average

3-shot groups across the bottom = .449 moa average

Average for all 8 groups = .530 moa average

Groups numbered in the order they were shot.

The very first LaRue-made bolt action rifle.

ETA - Note how little the group centers drifted.

Very nice, Mark! Still trying to figure out what the deal is with the e-mail i've been trying to send you. I'm not sure why you aren't receiving it.

I might have to liquidate more guns to pick up a bolt rifle or Tobr/OBR from ya! I feel like I'm lacking in the larger caliber department. Have a Rem700 but it's no Larue.

I know I can do better, my recoil management on a few of those larger groups wasn't as good as it could have been. I also probably need glasses to help focus, I'm only 34 but man... getting old sucks...

I'm going to rebarrel this rifle this weekend and decided to do one last range trip with the old barrel:

Home built SPR. Douglas barrel turned by CLE. Bushnell elite 1-8.5X24. Used a Triad wedge rear bag. Ammo was 69 SMK over 23.7 8208. About 2850 fps.

SPR division at 100 yards
Lennyo3034: Home build 223, Douglas SPR barrel with CLE chamber, Bushnell Elite SMRS 1-8.5X24, 69SMK over 8208. Groups: .989"/.612"/.673"/866"/.924"= avg. .813"= .777 MOA

The day was not warm, but the best day this week by far.

I screwed up the first attempt by shooting 10 into one of the targets because I'm retarded. I included it anyways because it's actually better than second attempt.
(.989+.612+.673+.866(10 rounds)+.924)/5=.813" at 100 yards, .777 MOA

Second attempt not as good. Hands were starting to shake.
(1.137+.594+1.028+.721+1.012)/5=.898" at 100 yards, .857 MOA

Tomorrow this rifle gets a Lilja barrel in 6.5 Grendel. I'm hoping for much better accuracy.

I know it looks like a three shot group, but I know for 100% fact I put five rds into that target. Here is a picture of the target while it was still posted, every other round is accounted for. The .223 rds in the left target are from zeroing earlier.

You have the same pic for 50 yards and 100 yards. Which is it?

No, two different pics and two different rifles. Notice the first pic is a 16" barrel with eotech and collapsible stock with the target at 50 yards. The 2nd pic is a 18" rifle with a scope and A2 stock with the target at 100 yards.

Same range, maybe I'm missing the targets set up at different ranges.

Yes, I shot at 50 yards, then moved the target back to 100. You can see how much farther away my target is compared to the lanes next to me at 50 yards.

I think we have someone we can put on the wall of claim...

Over 60,000 rounds through one barrel, with over 10,000 a week at some points.... yet still sub moa

How much will wind push a bullet at 50 yards?

I'll post pics in a bit but I went out with hunting ammo and my first group was solid. And that was it. Fairly gusty wind that was more tail/tail cross wind.

Almost completely negligible on the bullet at 50yds.

The problem is, the wind pushes on you.

Yeah that's what I thought. But both out 1st groups were solid. Then BLAM! They all just went to shit. My recoil management was solid. Follow through etc, text book...

I am not gonna post any pics to save room in the thread but I will post the numbers not for addition to the list but as a question.

Rifle is a PSA 20" A4 with LMT rear iron sight. Standard A2 forearm.
Ammo was Winchester 64gr Power Points
Groups:
1- 0.596"
2- 3.256"
3- 2.116"
4- 2.666"
5- 1.686"

MOA= 4.128

Weather was ok minus the fact that it was very windy, weather site says 8mph WSW, I would agree with a constant wind of that but with gust that were enough to BLOW trees around. So probably around 15-20mph gust. Not uncommon here at times.

I suppose it wasn't as gusty right at the start but hard to say. With the first group being as tight as it was, was that simply a 'Cold/Clean" bore group? Were the rest a rest a result of the wind or a "seasoned/not clean" barrel?

Again, I dry fired before the first group and was solid. Then with the actual shooting my sight picture seemed to be consistent, my recoil management was solid. Little jump on the muzzle and after the follow through my sight picture resting back at my pre-shot sight picture. Each shot 'felt' very smooth and solid.

Monday, as long as the the weather is calm I am gonna go out with my rest and do one with the rest and one without and see what happens. What I do not like is that this is hunting ammo and it's a dollar a pop...

I can take away if that it was a difference of cold/clean bore then I know my first shot on any game will be dead on. That first group was damn near 1 MOA... But the rest... not so much...

What's fucked up and makes me think the wind played more a roll then I anticipated was that I can shoot wolf better then this... And I zeroed this rifle with 64gr Power Point (on a rest) when I built it so I know it was dead on and to test I could drill coke bottles at 100 and 200 yards sitting with it...

Thoughts? Comments? Am I missing something obvious? Will we not not be fully sure till monday?

Your math is off.  Assuming your groups were measured center to center...

(.596 + 3.256 + 2.116 + 2.666 + 1.686) = 10.32 / 5 = 2.064" avg group / 1.047 = 1.971 average MOA

Unless you have proven that ammo out and seen what it does in that barrel a lot over time, I'd say you had one really good fluke group, and one really bad group.... and you averaged 2MOA, which aint terrible, given powerpoints are generally not match grade ammo.  I'd expect to see them shooting 1.5MOA or a hair better.  You aren't terribly far from that.

Don't overthink it.  Just rinse and repeat.

Remember though that it was at 50 yards

(Avg group/distance in yards) x 100 = MOA

(2.064"/50 yards) x 100

0.04128 x 100= 4.128 MOA

I don't expect anything much better then roughly 1.5" at 100 yards as that's what it's rated at, and I know that.

As much as I hate the cost I'm gonna run through a few more boxes to build confidence in the accuracy.

Yeah, that's why I'm trying to figure out if it's me, the gun, the ammo or the wind.

My brothers first group of wolf 55gr out of a 16" 1:7 spikes was 0.69" at 50 yards. Then, just like me, the groups just exploded, 3+ inches and even a 5" group!

I fired 10 rounds out of it and faired little better....

I'll report back with results on Monday.

One of the main reasons I started this "challenge" (other then the Sniperhide version) was to gather a collective of accuracy results with rifles and ammos used. To see if any trends resulted over the long term with "real" shooting positions, IE. The reason the rules are set up like they are, much to many folks dismay

And with the rear bag being a big point of complaint. I talked with guys in the precision forums to come up with a fair compromise on the rear bag. I wasn't gonna allow it at all but they convinced me

How quickly were the groups shot? It's possible if done rapidly that the barrel would be pretty hot, and result in a loss of accuracy. Temporarily of course. Did you let it cool completely and then make another attempt at a group? If so and it went back to being the small group, you may have found the issue.

I thought about that but I didn't burn through it. About 10-30 seconds between shots in a single group. About 5 minutes between groups.

I've shot fast groups and seen the POI string out due to a hot barrel.

Alright I did another this morning. Took a rest and that didn't work out, POI was even worse lol

So I went back to my sand bag and hand. Groups were better but still not what the ammo is rated for. I will say that I do have a harder time seeing the targets now... I may try a gain with some targets I can actually see better and may just do some bullseye just to see if it's my eyes going all blurred on the smaller targets.

I'll post this one as my entry for this gun and ammo for now. I also think it doesn't Too much care for these 64gr Power Ponits. I'll use them for game until I'm out of them as I won't really take any shots beyond 100 yards anyway and mostly 50 yards and under anyway so I know they wi work well enough for those distances.

Anyone know the MOA of a standard front sight post on a A2?

10.58 MOA?

So at 100 yards the front sight post is covering 10.58" of the target?

At 50 yards it's covering about 5"s?

I seem to remember rifle length (M16A2) as being ~12 MOA

I looked up different numbers but I believe the 20" was about 10 but might be 12.

I've seen those. Been thinking about them. When I put Tech Sights on my 10/22 it made seeing the targets so much easier and shot tighter groups.

I don't think I'll put those on this rifle but when I build up a straight up iron sight paper gun I will add those sights.
