Our season closed last Saturday.
Got out at 5 am where I was pretty sure a bird was roosted. Turns out there were three gobblers roosted there. Could NOT get them to come in, some hens out there too. For 2 hours I worked my way around the strut area, doing everything I knew. Finally set up about 150 yards out along a field edge hoping the hens would go sit and the Toms would come pay me a visit. I'm looking down the field edge towards them, concentrating, when all of a sudden I get this feeling like I'm being watched. Turn my head and a gobbler had snuck up on me from behind, silent, and was about 15 feet away.
He jumped and putted, I had a heart attack, by the time I got over my shock and even could bring my gun around he was in the next county.
As I told the wife after I tagged that bird on Day 2 of the season, at least the pressure was off and I know I'm not going to get shut out this year.
