I'm thinking about getting one of these, either 150gal or 300gal, to use as a *pool* for just me. I'd figure out some kind of cover to keep it clean, but can you put bleach in these to stop algae growth and any other nastiness?

I bought a 700 gallon (8’ diameter) stock tank from tractor supply for my grandkids to use when they visit. Have all the pool stuff, treatment kit, chlorine tabs, floating chlorine tab holder, vaccuum (garden hose hookup uses water pressure), skimmer pole, and a nice little Hayward sand filter that keeps it sparkling clear a summer. Of course, I drilled out the holes for the filter in and out connections. what a great little pool! Nice and refreshing on a hot afternoon for me too!

You can use your little “tubbby” if you want but why not go whole hog and do something better? 😊 I didn’t “need” the filter of course but I found it at a pool supply store and it fit the size perfectly…overkill, actually but I like it.
I’m moving the pool to my grandkids house this summer so her mom can deal with it. |

There are a lot of reasons that's not good for you. I don't have time to type them all, and yes, "chlorine" is in our drinking water (not good for you either) and I'm a bleach user, but I don't want to take a bath in it, even dilute. ![]() |

I do it in my bathtub, whenever I get Poison Ivy or Chigger bites. Dries it all right up, and smells like I've been swimming.

So you agree that the bleach wouldn't hurt the tank, and would keep it from getting slimy? I could spend more time outside this Summer, if I had a cool place to sit.

Go to the big box store od your choice and get a 10 dollar piece of copper rod. I clean out my goats tank twice a year with a copper rod in it. Without almost weekly.

Dunno about how clear it would keep it sans the filtration you have with a normal pool filter thing.
But there are a variety of stock tank cleaner things, both liquid and in tablet form we've used that seem to help reduce growth in the water. No promises on being healthy for you, but if it ain't bad for both the pet hay burners and the livestock, I wouldn't worry personally. That said, I do my soaking inside in a tub with a beer and a book. |

Spa chemicals will keep the water clean enough for a while, filtration would help them work better though. They can be purchased in smaller quantities than pool chemicals, they are pretty much the same thing though.

When I clean my stock tanks, I routinely spray them down with a strong bleach mix. Let dwell for 15 minutes, and brush/wipe it down, rinse, and refill. No visible harm to tanks. UV will likely kill them long before bleach.

Maybe just concrete blocks with holes facing the sky...and a bunch of longer rebar driven in at all four corners inside so they can't move, then pavers tacked with a masonry cement (NOT MORTAR) on top? I'm not trying to be a wuss, but knowing you have walking issues...wondering if you are ever less-than-stead on your fee going up steps. (Just guessing--I don't know). One wobble left or right means disaster for you unless the steps are REALLY stable. There are ways to get stability for unattached pavers without digging out a foot of dirt and doing the whole patio thing. Totally okay to say, "nope I don't need that." Cuz I'm being a total worrywort here. ![]() I apologize. I can't help it. ![]() |

That's a definite issue, which is why I have it so close to the wall. It gives me more to hold onto, and also something to bounce off of if I start to fall. Anything to break the fall, because sometimes I have real trouble getting back up. Once I get a cover, if I find that there's space I may mount a grab bar on the top edge.
Edit - I can't drive anything into the ground there. It's very close to where our electric service goes under the house. |

That looks good. For filling in the bottom, what about using expanding foam and then cutting off the excess with a putty knife after it cures?

We are in the process of putting a deck around our recently constructed 9' stock tank pool (I hate Pintrest). We just leveled out the ground as best we could and put some sand down for it to sit on. I bet if you put sand under that one it would fill the voids and be good to go.

Got it done. WOW!
25 minutes to fill. 73 degrees, started the fire, was at 90 in 40 minutes, then the fire died down to the middle of the barrel (I did a top-down fire) - and then the water really got hot! We got in at 4:30 PM, didn't get out until almost 7:30. I feel like a wet noodle. Max temp was 108, then we started adding cold water. Got it down to 97-98 and it stayed there for a good hour and a half. Pump isn't nearly as loud as I thought it would be. Pics tomorrow, too tired today! |

I'm trying to think of something though, similar in height to a booster seat. I have trouble getting in/out, but I have trouble walking out there. My right leg is still mostly good, so I step in with that one, then kind of drag my left in. The steps worked well. It got me up high enough that it was easier to step in, and my left leg was a bit higher so it was easier to drag in. Sometimes I scratch it up a bit, dragging it over things. ![]() |

So when covid hit, my wife wanted a backyard pool to relax in. The 8' stock tank was purchased. We got a round pool liner, Intex pool pump/filter, and everything worked out just great. Pool chemicals, skimmers, bubble cover and real cover. Worked great.
Then I got a crazy idea and bought an on-demand propane water heater. A normal 20# (BBQ size) tank could take those ~700gal from ~70-72* to 100* in a few hours. I bought foam sheets from Lowes and cut them down, stuffed them between the pool liner and metal. Pool liners are made for deep pools, so there is a lot of excess, we just wrapped it over the side. I tried a 2" foam insulated topper over the whole pool, but that didn't work that great at keeping the heat in. We're still kicking around putting another one in at our new place. |
|
|
[#50]
Pool shock -
iirc, it's 3lbs per 10,000 gallons. I'd put in some more. For our 700gal tank we'd put about 1/2 a capful, probably just under 1/4 cup. Just make sure you move the water around to dissolve it. |
