I wondered that as well...
Got it this afternoon and the cable is slim enough that it actually comes through the door jam with no effort on my F-150. Doesn't seem to kink or bend the cable. The magnet on the base seems to be plenty strong. Of course I didn't think about needing an adapter to connect the PL-259 to the radio. So off to Radio Shack in the morning. The Nagoya antenna is a definite improvement over the stock. Picking up several channels now that CHIRP programmed and all I got before was some brief white noise. The channels I was picking up with the stock antenna are a bit clearer now as well. For $5 I'd say it was worth it. |

Not sure if this has been posted previously.
Below is a link to the BAOFENG branded cable. It is still a 2303 Prolific chipset, but I can confirm that it works on a Mac running Mavericks. Cost is $10.99, so a couple bucks more. Mine came as pictured on the Amazon page, despite one reviewer who claimed to receive a generic cable w/o the "BAOFENG" plate. It is sold by the "Sain Store" on Amazon, which is where most of the UV-5Rs are being sold at the moment, so I bought this one because I doubted they would be selling a BAOFENG cable if they did not work. This cable does not need to trimmed or jammed into the radio to make it seat with a UV-5R. BAOFENG cable Below is the driver for MAC OSX 10.7-10.9. Nevermind that the page shows the installer dialogue in Spanish, or that it is says it is for Lion and Mountain Lion- it worked for me on Mavericks: Driver I would restart, even though this installer does not say to. YMMV. |

| I for one am getting completely frustrated with this radio... Got a new antenna ordered along with a roof mount antenna... As of right now, 90% of radio traffic received is too static to understand, and only once have I been able to hit the local repeater and have someone acknowledge me... Radio is a booger to program from keypad and I think I'm just about ready to make someone a deal on this and buy a real radio... Really disappointed out the box I couldn't go online within 10minutes.... |
|
Did somebody pay it forward?
I just received the programming cable in the mail, I had forgotten to order it when I ordered my radio. I'm thinking I just buy so much crap, I forgot about it - especially b/c it came in the same "slow bout from china" packaging as the 5.69 backpacking stoves. That means I ordered it over 2 weeks ago, maybe closer to a month. And it arrived at my office address...

I cheated and use CHIRP to program mine, but have had no problems being able to understand any of the traffic received. How far away from you is the repeater? Does it require a certain tone to access, or have an odd offset? |

Really disappointed out the box I couldn't go online within 10minutes.... Saw a thread somewhere where some solder can break off a tuning coil/cap inside the factory Baofeng dual band rubber duck antenna, especially if it get flexed a little too much. If you're so inclined you might try to take it apart and make sure everything is ok. I think everything comes out the bottom of the antenna. ....or try another antenna. Or just sell the thing.... These Baofengs are indeed a PITA to program via keypad, especially when you start throwing in TX and RX tones. Software is the only way to fly IMO. That said I still think they're good little disposable radios for the coin. But they'll never replace my Yaesu FT-530 that's been going 20 years strong. |
|
Is there a good antenna for mobile use, that will fit other radios when I upgrade?
Im not licensed to TX yet, but I keep my radio with me all the time at work. (driver) Just looking for something that may be better than the stock one. |

I can get freq.,offset, etc, but don't see how to turn off the receive tone via software. In the Tone Mode column selecting "Off" is no tones, either transmitted or for receive. Selecting "Tone" in the Tone Mode column causes the UV-5R to transmit a tone, with no receive tone, in order to activate the repeater. The tone frequency is selected in the Tone column. Selecting "TSQL" (Tone Squelch) in the Tone Mode column causes the UV-5R to require a receive tone in order to open squelch. That tone frequency is selected in the ToneSql column. Tone column for transmitting, ToneSql column for receiving. |

Thanks jupiter7k. http://www.miklor.com/uv5r/pdf/uv5r_ProgStd.pdf I used this flow chart. It took a few tries but I successfully programmed my radio... manually! Now that I have done it a few times, its really not that hard to do. I'll give the software another go. Thanks again for your tutelage. |

Yes. Your driver probably isn't working with the cable. That'd explain why it isn't recognizing your radio. I'll defer to Jupe's wisdom on the Baofeng though! |

FWIW, I had no trouble using the directions in the link I posted above to get it working on Win 8 as well. You just have to defeat the driver auto update crap. The instructions told me how on the Miklor page. I just followed along studiously and everything worked fine |

Maybe a couple of miles unless conditions are perfect. How? The easiest way is to set the same frequency in both units in frequency mode and enjoy. Be a little careful as these radios WILL transmit on frequencies that they shouldn't such as Public Service (police) frequencies. |

I got mine in the mail about 2hrs ago from that Amazon lightning sale. I took it out, put the battery in and antenna on and after pushing scan, the cops were the first frequency it picked up. I'm used to being able to transmit on their frequency (from being EMS)...but just like there, we use our own. They don't use ours and we don't use theirs. Programming is definitely not simple. But I'm starting to educate myself on it. -Emt1581 |
| Are there any channels that are set aside for unlicensed people to use like MURS? Or any "safe" channels to use in an emergency for HT to HT communication? |

There radios are NOT legal to use on the MURS, GMRS, or FRS frequencies, even though they will do it. There's no such thing as "safe" channels either. Depending on where you are, there may not be anyone around who cares, but it's still illegal to transmit without a license. If it truly is an emergency, then you can probably get away with it, but it's pretty easy to get the technician license and be legal. |

I figured if I can buy them at wal-mart and use them without a license...why is it illegal for me to do it WITH one on a different radio? With the emergency transmissions, I understood it that in a true life/death situation, you can pretty much transmit on any frequency. An extreme example, but if I were 2 min. from being trapped somewhere and burned alive, I could care less what consequences there are...I'll gladly transmit into a police/fire/ems band if it'll save my life. Not to say I'm some kind of rebel looking to cause problems or get in trouble, but with a true emergency where a life is in imminent danger,,,rules/etiquette goes out the window for me. Thanks -Emt1581 |

Thanks -Emt1581 The UV-5Rs are not type certified for MURS, FRS or GMRS, and that's what makes it illegal. I'm with you on emergency use. If it's life or death, or even great bodily injury, then I'll use whatever I can and damn the consequences. I'm looking for the specific part certification that's needed, but I can't find it right now. ETA: You can buy the GMRS radios at WalMart, but you DO need a license (about $89 for the whole family -- no tests) to transmit. FRS is completely unlicensed as long as the radio is certified. |

I always thought that if a device had a capability...and it was legal for me to do that action with one device...why not any other? Can the FCC/other hams even tell what the device is? Does it interfere with something? Personally I don't even know how to access GMRS but I was thinking that for certain activities I'd like to be able to use GMRS on them. My wife is just not tech. savvy and I don't see her passing a Tech exam. I'm anxious to hear more about this and whatever "parts". Thanks -Emt1581 |
