Thanks -Emt1581 No, there's no way for the receiving station to know if the transmitting station is certified unless it generates interference or the person admits to it. The other time you might get busted is if you're obviously using an uncertified radio AND other hams nearby recognize it. They would probably harass the crap out of you, but not turn you in unless you're being an a-hole. Here's a link to the FCC page on GMRS: FCC GMRS Part 95 certification The Baofeng is certified under Part 90 only. It's on the label under the battery. |

Thanks -Emt1581 There's the same issue with FRS as GMRS as far as certification goes. FRS radios also need to be part 95 certified. The other problem with using the Baofengs for FRS is that they have a detachable antenna, which is a no-no for FRS. The Baofengs will also transmit at powers far in excess of the .5 watts allowed for FRS. Even set to low power, the Baofengs are still a one watt radio. But . . . yes, they will do it. I have been wanting to get one of the Baofeng's for a while and after reading through this thread, I can't decide which one would be the best route to go? I am looking at the UV-5R, UV-5R+ or the UV-B5? Now I don't have any accessories yet, so I don't have to worry about model compatibility yet. I plan on buying a programing cable, extended battery, mic, better antenna and maybe a AA battery pack.
So what are the differences, if any, between these three models? And maybe your thoughts, opinions or preferences on them? I appreciate your answers! |

And maybe your thoughts, opinions or preferences on them? I appreciate your answers! As a long time user.... The UV-5R, -5R+, -5RA, etc, are all IDENTICAL under the shell. NO difference. BUT the regular -5R will take more accessories. The other variants have slightly different shaped cases and the larger 3600 or 3800 mah battery will not fit well without some Dremel work. But as far as performance, none. The UV-B5 is not the same radio... and it has the fewest accessories available for it. It is similar to the UV-5R, but not the same. It is said to have a better receiver, that is, not getting interference from adjacent channels but in real world operation we have not found the UV-5R to be a problem in this regard. So, my recommendation is the regular UV-5R. I will also recommend the larger batteries. These radios are small. Your ring and pinky fingers hang off the bottom. If you try to work the keypad with your thumb you will drop the radio. But with the larger battery it is better balanced, and you just have a better grip. One-handed operation is easy. I don't even own any standard 1800 mah batteries anymore. I trade them off. There is one variant that is somewhat different. Radiomart sells a special model available only through him that is 2m and 220 mhz. No 440. The filters on the radio are set up for 220 as is the antenna, 2m/220. Some will tell you that you can use software and enter the 220 frequencies in the regular 2m/440 model. That is true. The radio will even try to transmit on 220, but not get anything out. The filtering prevents that, as does the antenna. Like teaching a pig to sing, it is a waste of time and annoys the pig. In this thread, if you will read from the beginning, it will tell you everything you need to know, all the accessories, about optional antennas, all of that. Back to batteries. This radio is stingy on power consumption... amazingly so. When the speaker is not chattering there is almost no current draw. With moderate amount of use the UV-5R, with 3600 mah battery, will go 4-5 days. You can order this radio with the large battery only, not paying for an extra battery. http://www.ebay.com/itm/221065959973 This is a good, reliable seller, though overseas. I have bought more than a dozen radios from this seller for myself and fellow hams. The Nagoya NA-701 is an excellent antenna, and there is cheap one, less than $5 almost as good. http://www.ebay.com/itm/370482649911 Same seller as the radio above. Will come in the same box if you order at the same time. http://www.ebay.com/itm/181026286509 Cheap but good antenna. http://www.ebay.com/itm/170738199845 Same cheap but good antenna. DO NOT fret about "getting the latest firmware". It makes absolutely NO difference in operation. You can't change it, either. A non-issue. AA batteries... not worth the effort. But if you do... The radio is made for the 7.4 volt Lithium that comes in it. It will shut down if excess voltage. The AA case has room for 6 AA's. If you put in 6 alkaline AA's that is 6 x 1.5 volts = 9 volts. The radio will shut down. If you put in 6 Nicads, that is 6 x 1.25 = 7.5 volts and it will work ok. If you insist on alkalines you need to get a "dummy cell" and put inline, so that you only have 5 batteries. 5 x 1.5 = 7.5 volts will work. Other acc, if it works with a Kenwood with the 2-pin mic, it will work with the UV-5R. Go back to the beginning of this thread about programming cables. Read and believe. DO NOT USE Baofeng software. Toss any discs. Use CHIRP. Far more stable, just better software. RT is no better. And CHIRP will program a lot of radios, somewhere around 60. I bought a cable with USB on one end, and the other end interchanges with half a dozen plugs. I can program about 90% of the HTs made with that. So, read this thread from the beginning. It's got links, pictures, and arrows and everything. |

Thanks for the leg work Jupiter7200. My new VU-5R+ is all programmed up. I used my Wouxun programming cable with the CHIRP software.
I tried using a Diamond SJR77CA antenna on my radio but it dosen't work unless I'm within one foot of the radio to receive any signal. The antenna functions just fine on my Wouxun UV3D. The stock radio antenna seems to work just fine in my area. I have not problems with Squelch is set at 2. I'd like to pick up a Nagoya NA-701 and give it a try next. |

The UV-5R is easily swamped by too strong signal. Two UV-5Rs within 10 ft or so will both seem to not work. Try transmitting to a repeater with your other radio, and listening with whatever antenna with the UV-5R. The NA-701 seems to be a good compromise of size vs. range. The NA-771 has a little more range, but at 16" ceases to be "handy". |

Anyone have a suggestion on a good female SMA to BNC adapter? I got one off eBay, but I don't like the way it sits on the radio. The regular SMA to BNC I got was great for my other radios, snugs up against the body of both my scanner and Yaesu HT, and is shorter than the one that came with the Uniden scanner - but the one for the UV5R sticks up quite a ways. Just looking for a low profile and something that fits down against the body of the radio to minimize any flexing on the connector. This was the one I got off eBay http://www.ebay.com/itm/170786804440. Maybe this one will work better? Hard to tell from the photos. http://www.ebay.com/itm/151211355542. Oh, and if you're curious about a regular SMA to BNC adapter, this is the one I picked up http://www.ebay.com/itm/181172744594. |
I aim to misbehave.

| I got a radio (UV-5R) from my wife for my birthday. I'm reading up to get my ticket and hope to take the test the next time it is offered. I have found out there is a repeater tower less than 10 miles from my house. Will it be possible to reach it with my radio? |

To expand upon that, if you're talking about level ground with no mountains/hills/etc in the way, probably. However, if you're in a valley and the repeater is in another valley and there's a big hill between you, probably not. YMMV This is part of why we do this, to find out if it works |

pick up a better antenna for it and you should be good.

I bought a second UV-5+ and a Nagoya NA-701 and NA-771. The newest radio seems to have a functional squelch level as opposed to the month older one that either works on or off. Neither "higher gain antenna" seems to matter at all for increasing reception on either radio. Not one more dollar will go to these radios, I've learned my lesson. Having two of the same models really shows the glitches of one over the other in side by side testing.
For $40 they are not a bad radio, but more money really gets you something much better. For all I have invested in Baofengs and accessories I still couldn't have bought a FT-60 even when on sale. It's all still a great learning experience. Simplex on the ground is challenging to try to squeeze out a little more distance. But with side by side testing even a Wouxun is worth $50 more for the additional range. Earlier this week I had, and again next week I will have again access to a RigExpert AA-170 for graphing the 2 Meter side of the antennas. The Baofeng stock antennas do have different SWR graph prints from generation to generation. We saw that the older UV-5 had a slightly higher SWR than the UV-5+ antenna on 2 Meter. Next week we will graph the Nagoya and Diamond Female SMA antennas SWR too. More simplex testing tonight, I wanted to test out the Nagoya NA-771 hi-gain but it provided no better reception off either Baofeng UV-5+ I have compared to their stock antenna. |

I have not read every post on here, but I have not seem many negative reviews on these radios. Maybe people are just overlooking a lot of flaws do to the low cost? Either way, this $30 radio is what got me interested in HAM. I was about to order a second radio and antennas for both, but I guess I will hold off on the antenna since it is up in the air whether they are any better than stock.
Does anyone have the Maxpedition CP-M pouch? I think it will fit the radio without the extra battery, would just like to confirm before I order. http://www.maxpedition.com/pc/CP-M-8p2.htm |

I drove up and down the highway at various distances from a nearby repeater, talking to the owner, would stop every so often and swap around between the stock antenna, the J0125A (Puxing? the famous $3.79 antenna, about 8" long), Nagoya NA-701 (about 8" long), and Nagoya NA-771 (about 16" long). I got about 2 miles more range with the J0125A, another mile or two with the 701, and yet another mile or two with the 771. All three of the aftermarket antenna were better than the original stock antenna. I have heard they have since improved the stock antenna, but that the 701 is still better. For me, the 16" long 771, while the best range, is awkward. If I were out camping or something, I might use it. But for the things I use an HT for, it is just too long. And it is a tossup which is "better value", the inexpensive J0125A, or the NA-701. I suggest buying Nagoyas from Radioshop888 on Ebay, as they seem to be genuine Nagoya and perform well. Others have gotten fakes from other sellers that did not perform. See my post above, dated 1/2/2014 1:11:47 AM CST for links. |

Be weary of the USB programming cables. A lot of them (cheap ones from china) use fake Prolific PL-2303 chips, which are marginal in performance, and drivers. I prefer to stick with serial programming cables, and use my own, trusted, serial-usb cables. Has anyone else tried to do the audio mod on the UV-5R? I did the one that removed some caps and resistors and shorted the pads to reconnect the audio path. Didn't really notice much difference in audio clarity, tho. I think the muffled/low TX audio and poor selectivity are my two biggest gripes with the radio. But, for a "not worried about it getting trashed" radio, it work ok. |

| I'm trying to program a couple repeaters into my radio using CHIRP. When I put in the offset direction and upload to the radio, the display shows +-. I would have thought it would show a + OR -, not both. I do have some frequencies that the duplex is set to off and they also show +- as expected. |

The UV-5r series shows the + and - more as an indicator that an offset is there, not necessarily the direction. Similar to the signal meter shows signal, but not how much signal. If it says you have an offset and you don't want one, check your settings again in Chirp.
Edit: Cleaned it up. Damn on-screen phone keyboards |

I'm not too worried about the belt clip fitting with it. I figure that is why I would use a pouch instead. More interested with the added width of the plug on the side. The belt clip doesn't really add a whole lot to it anyway. |

I haven't quite decided how I want to mount my UV-5R yet. I keep going back and forth between a belt, throwing all my radio stuff in a bag, or mounting it on the outside of a bag. Have you played around at all with placement? I bought two of the pouches, one in OD the other in multicam. They will switch between my vests, PIG and packs. I've been going back and forth about the different pouches that other members have posted but I think I like this one the most simply because of the access to the PTT and jacks... also it'll accommodate both size batteries which may be important... Have you had any experience with battery life at all? Like I previously posted, I've accidentally left it on all day and it was still going strong. Obviously the battery indicator isn't functional, but have you had one die on you after X amount of hours? |
