Don't try to car jack four BW guys. Driving down a darkened street, a line of guys block the road, as you slow to a stop, others come out to block the rear escape, as they close in three guys step out armed with Glocks, scatter like coach roaches when the lights come on. Gun fire heard out and about almost every night. Never thought I would see the day that electrical workers would need armed guards so they could work. You meet great people who would do anything for you and appreciate you being there. Others would split your head open with a mallet if blinked. |
When I left BW had fired three shots. Two were ND's and the third was an AD. All three were terminated (the AD was in a clearing barrel and IMO should not have been fired). |
You guys crack me-up. The twisted type of humor I can't get from most folks I know.  I have only seen one dude who appeared to be an actual BW guy post over at another forum and he made it sound like the Katrina gig was a last minute deal where they sort of patched people together and tossed them down there double quick. Said he had taken his own FS2000 down. What kind of shocks me is that most police departments were sort of low on ammo stock. I guess I always just assumed cops had AR15.com supplies of ammunition in a back room someplace. Is it pretty common for individual police stations and departments to have such low supplies of ammunition? |
It was last minute. Put together teams of people with various military/LEO backgrounds in a hurry? Yes. Carry your own firearms? NO. Some other companies did allow personally owned firearms but they did not last long. Most gone in the first few days. Others filtered in as the deal died down with other companies of what I would call your more standard security companies. We do not have enough 5.56 ammo to have quals this year. Personally owned ammo I could supply the department. |

I thought that was a little suspect. I know that for Iraq they are very strict on what firearms the guys use (the firearms are already over there you don't bring with) and even what kind of optics they can use. They fine guys who get caught with the wrong gear I guess in Iraq so it struck me as a little odd that folks would bring their own personal firearms down, but with the quickness of it all I guess anything is possible. |

BW has it's own armory. Lot's of Glocks, Bushmasters and 870's. Long arms were taken back up after about two weeks. |
Our ROE did not allow the use of deadly force in that situation. |
They do have lots of Glocks. I have seen 4-5 stacks of Glock boxes stacked over waist high. Those are just for training. |
There was a rumor going around that one of the trailers full of guns and ammo has stolen. I never was able to confirm nor did I see any news reports about it. |
the major benefit for me is to power the well pump, its pretty deep, with water most other things are manageable |

I know that, if not for what me and my teammates provided....my SWAT team would have NOTHING!!!! We have done so much for so long with so little..that by now we can do damn near anything with basically nothing.

I live pretty close to you, in Royal Oak. I have a lot of the same concerns as you do. Very few of my friends/neighbors seem to be able to conceptualize the idea of any kind of SHTF, and I would guess that almost none of them are prepared for it in any way. I do have a very close friend in Ferndale who owns guns, is military (ANG), and has and awesome Bulgarian wife who is used to doing without, but he's about it, and we could easily be cut off from each other if things got seriously shitty. I know that during the blackout in 2003, when I lived in Ferndale, the police had squad cars sideways across the intersections at 8 mile and were turning back the steady stream of traffic trying to come in from Detroit. I was teaching a pretty urban population at that time, and many of them were very vocally upset that they were not allowed to get into the suburbs, but could not articulate why they wanted to go there. I slept in my La-Z-Boy with my SAR-1 for a night then we bugged out to Kentucky. |

Any ideas on approaching neighbors concerning organizing? How do you tactfully ask "hey much ammo you got, food stored, and who wants to right a duty roster"??? Or do you keep a plan and ad hoc it when the SHTF. My neighborhood runs the gamot of some GOBs (me included), some urbanites, and some seniors on each side of me ( I will defend them to the last). Local CERT groups, how do they feel about firearms. Most .gov groups tend to frown on taking things into one's own hands. A GREAT thread ! I agree with those who say "Write it down" There are many good lessons for each of us to apply in our own SHTF preperations, and yours is some of the most thought provoking.
I'm going to hazard a WAG, here. Mr Bonnin saw "something" in you that he did not see in others, and was being tough to, (1) verify his assesment (2) get you up to speed to help him with getting the other Minutemen up to speed. Respect to you, Shane,, ya done good, kid. Mr. Bonnin has some Fans on Arfcom, , most of whom would be proud to shake his hand and buy him a beer! , and on olde skool tag.

I was in St. Bernard Parish after hurricane Katrina. It was a really stupid situation, I can say this now being out of the guard. For 20 days we went house to house looking for survivors. I carried my M-16 but the brilliant geniuses in charge didn't let us have ammo. Only the squad leader had any ammo, and I think they gave him a total of 4 magazines. We never fired a shot at anyone. The thing that sucked was being sent to guard a post or roadblock with NO ammo and there were civilians running around, many of whom were probably armed. So yeah, it was retarded. And anyone you ran into would lie, cheat, or steal to get what they wanted. One time we heard some gunfire. Apparently the local cops were shooting dogs. One officer had gotten "attacked" by a dog a few days before and apparently by this point any dog that came towards them was being shot. Another time we heard gunshots in the distance but never quite figured out what it was. A third time the cops and MPs thought they had a sniper situation. They were all out there with body armor, low crawling through the hills. It ended up being one of those automated air guns that is used to scare off birds. Anyway, no shots fired here. I did see a dead body though. And it had been chewed on by dogs. BTW shane, interesting posts, I agree you should write a book. But for a twist, you could have the dead rise up and attack you! Hah ha, just kidding. |

Excellent information! Though, I'm like some other posters and have a water well, and aerobic septic, so I'm in progress on my generator. I want a trifuel so that I can run it on propane. I need to go take my neighbors some beer. We all have guns as we live on 3 acres or more, and there are lots of snakes. |

I have had 3 hurricanes go right over my area and have lost power for 13, 9, and 6 days in the three events.. 0 shots fired. I live in a pretty affluent area and we really don't have alot of crime. AR, 12 GA and dog were ready at all times though. But no action. Looters all understand the sound and meaning of racking one in a 12 Ga. Edit colt 45 was ready at all times also. |

Nothing as exciting as you guys but I got there as an emergency responder a couple days after the storm. I was involved in setting up a warehouse and distributing humanitarian supplies from our refinery in Garyville. We had truckloads of food, water, tools and hygiene stuff for our employees shipped in. We got our stuff there just before FEMA started hijacking private trucks and diverting shipments where they thought stuff should go. Cops showed up and told us we were on our own if word got out what we were doing there. They advised they could not stop our being over run if the trouble came our way. Our company has a strict "no weapons" policy and only provided a few unarmed security guards. I slept in an RV next to the warehouse with my benchmade on a laynard on my wrist. The whole experience is something I'll never forget. |
