I like to use mine as shelf stands, once they have been filled with ammo.  Guess what I store on the shelves

More details on that set up please!!!
The 706 is in a "tall" foam lined can. The mobile bracket is mounted to a board that slips between the foam pieces and is trapped there. This prevents the actual radio from ever coming into contact with the outside of the can. I mounted the radio unit backwards to have access to the connections on the back. I can pull the board out partways to dissapate heat if needed.
The control head is mounted to the lid (which is removable of course) and can be remote located within about 6 feet of the transciever unit.
The little crossband repeater is an Icom IC-21AT Handheld transciever on 144.000 and 440 mhz. It uses a 6AH SLA battery and a homebrew dual band antenna. I used some wood pieces for the framework and a brass strip to clip the belt clip onto.

Neither of these are 100% waterproof, but are "water resistant".  A little silicone applied around the holes I drilled in the cans would seal them up.
