Over the past couple of decades I've amassed a fairly significant gun collection.
However, I have found that for the most part, it's just a handful of guns that go to the range with me. While I do enjoy having a lot of unique pieces, the reality is that I think I'd be better off selling of most of it and focusing on what I actually shoot a lot. I actually had a significant purge (via consignment at an LGS) maybe a year ago and honestly I don't miss a single one of them. So with that said, any suggestions on what my options might be? Shipping guns is out of the question. Done it in the past with sales on the EE here and it was a huge pain in the ass and only getting more difficult. I could go consignment again but there's a lot of a guns to sell and some are pretty esoteric. I could do it in small batches but that would prolong the process. It might be a bit much for one gun shop to take on, as well. What about an auction house? Anyone do anything like this and deal with an auction house? How much do they typically take on fees/commission/whatever? Any other options I'm not thinking of? |

View Quote I've used Bryant Auctions at the Lake twice. The first time (probably in 2019), I sold a couple dozen guns at one of their regular gun auctions. Some guns went cheap, some went high, but overall, I was happy. Probably did almost as well as I would have done selling them myself and saved myself the hassle. I did another batch of a dozen guns last fall. That didn't go nearly as well. I attended the auction and felt like turnout was light and people just weren't bidding stuff up. Buyers got some good deals that day. My sense is that now is not a good time to sell guns. Folks are holding onto their money and there's a lot of guns for sale on the market. As for rate, I think Bryant normally charges 20% but I was able to negotiate a better rate due to the volume I brought to the sale. |

Hi,
Why not sell them to Missouri members? I'm sure there are members here willing to part with some funds to pick up some local guns. |

That would avoid having to deal with so much volume. For the esoteric ones, you could list them in the EE as FTF only, and link them in the pinned EE thread at the top of this page. |

Keep an eye on this thread, it seems vaporman is in the same situation as you, could probably join in with him.

I caught the 2nd 1/2 of a gun auction in Ava at:
https://cheyneyauctions.com/ I missed the gun sales but caught the ammo and accessories. Ammo seemed to be going for around the current rate / retail or a few $ less. Chatting with folks that bought guns, it seemed like most of them went around retail or a $50 to $100 under. I snagged a 50 cal ammo can of loose LC 7.62x51 and a 50 cal ammo can of LC 5.56 on strippers in bandoliers. I have a few guns I'd want to pass on to family and friends when I kick the bucket. The rest of it can go to an auction house. |

You could try local gun shops as well. They will sometimes buy out large estates or collections. You can get a table at a LGS and setup yourself and sell as a private collection that cuts out the middle man on some of the stuff.
What part of the state are you in if you don't mind me asking? I am always looking to buy things and I have no problem driving for them. |

I helped a friend sell off over 50 guns worth about 35 grand, a few years ago. We worked out a deal and it was $50-100 per gun, depending on value. I cataloged, took pics, listed them, did all the communications, set up all the meetings, and tried to do them in groups of four or five guns or more, so that when he and I met people, we weren’t doing the meeting just for one item. It did not take that long to get things gone. He could’ve used auction house, it would cost about 3000-4000 more, but also things might’ve possibly sold a little bit higher due to people being competitive.
Step one, get a list of the items and the price you want and go from there. Just a thought. |

Are the guns still increasing in value? If you are looking for funds to do something else other than reinvesting, go for it. If they are going up in value, could be the best hedge against inflation out there

check into a auction house , this one i listed below I've bought a couple of
guns off of the auction , the way it worked they have all firearms there in a secure aera , the do offer a day where anyone can inspect any items listed , if you miss that then you just bid on the items and if you when the next day you go to the location pay for your items , on firearms you fill out a 4473 and they process it there , then when you are approved they will complete the transfer , I dont know what the charge but you could call them and ask and go from there , TS2 https://imanauction.hibid.com/catalog/518361/bryan-estate-and-others-online-gun-auction |

I’d just stick with consignment.
It’s safe, it’s easy, and you should have interest if you’re dealing with a shop that has good foot traffic. |

If the auction site takes higher fees, a little paperwork would be worth it to go with a gun shop (assuming that their fees are lower). |

TS2 Yes. Once the gun goes into the FFL's log book, it can only transfer to an unlicensed person with a 4473/NICS. That applies to the consignor/owner of the gun. If you want your own gun back, you have to jump through the hoops. https://www.atf.gov/firearms/qa/how-does-licensee-handle-sale-consignment-firearm How does a licensee handle the sale of a consignment firearm? Firearms received for sale on consignment must be entered in the licensee’s acquisition and disposition record. The sale of a consignment firearm is handled in the same manner as other firearm sales. Return of any consigned firearms by the licensee to the consignor must be entered in the licensee’s disposition record. An ATF Form 4473 and a NICS check must be completed prior to the return of such firearms. [18 U.S.C. 923(g); 27 CFR 478.122, 478.123, 478.124 and 478.125] |

I’ve sold probably dozens of guns on consignment with my LGS. Never had a bad experience. Set realistic prices, maybe discuss additional costs for Gunbroker if you think that might be worth it for a specific gun, and everything should work itself out. It’s easily my favorite way to sell guns unless I have a friend that I already know wants something. |

I have a few I should sell off as well.
Ruger Redhawk 45 Colt / 45 acp - I haven't shot it in years. Ruger PC Carbine with Magpul Backpacker Stock - I rarely shoot it. Ruger Mini-14 Tactical - good shooter but I haven't shot it in years. Left hand Savage Scout 308 Rifle - It's a little too heavy for me. Rex Arex Zero 1 - Clone of a Sig 226 - I don't see myself every CCW-ing it. 2 Glock 19's with aftermarket slides. I have 3. CZ75 PO1 Tactical - tempted to sell. It's a nice shooter but too heavy for carry. Bushmaster (Remington Ownership) AR15 - bought from a Widow, nothing wrong with it, I have too many AR15's. Springfield M1A Scout - I rarely shoot it and I recently picked up a significantly lighter weight Ruger SFAR 308. I think I'll wait and see what happens in November. |

To OP's post. I had ok luck with Cabela's in KCK, for cash. They were also giving out gift cards based on the value they gave you, so it was a little mor $. I got almost $750 for older 700 BDL 30-06. I had 3 and decided to stick with the one that was my dad's, even though his is an ADL, so no mag door release. |

If you're near Wentzville, consign at Josephville Gun Shop for a fair deal.
Thornhill has a large following and an internal auction floor so bidders can be warm and dry, or cool and dry. Gun auctions fill the house. There's a good size auction coming up you could attend to see first hand. In Troy. https://thornhillauction.com/auctions/ On the other side of the state there is a popular auction company in Bolivar that had a huge crowd at an auction I attended. Gun auction tomorrow. https://www.diamond-s-auction.com/event/annual-winter-firearms-auction-2/ |

I wouldn't hesitate to drive across the state for something like this if I was looking to buy. |
