Not a joke, this is an ongoing argument. British (now American) wife...we grocery shop every three or four days for fresh food, and she's pushed back for a long time against a second freezer or dried stocks because I have absolutely no idea.

Slowly relenting, I think we now have 10 or 12 cans of soup. Amazon delivered today while she was napping, and I made the mistake of cutting the box open. At least she got me some Lowensenf...and if you've never had Branston pickle it's excellent on sammiches.

I would figure that everyone in Idaho had supplies in case of a big snow or something. At least instant potatoes.

I can't really fault her, we normally do a ham at Christmas and she picked up a bottle of HP in our local grocery a couple of days ago...$9.00 a bottle in BF Idaho, and you don't get a lot of sauce in each bottle. This came from Virginia, I'm sure it was much less expensive.

WHITE VINEGAR, GLUCOSE-FRUCTOSE, TOMATO PUREE, BLACKSTRAP MOLASSES, DATES, MODIFIED CORNSTARCH, SALT, CONCENTRATED ORANGE JUICE, SPICES, ONIONS, TAMARIND EXTRACT, CONCENTRATED APPLE JUICE, GARLIC, MUSTARD FLOUR, CARAMEL.

Hope that helps....

It's crack in a bottle, is what it is.

Good brown sauce with a bit of fermented tang to it.  Good on cooked breakfasts, cheese and onion sandwiches, fried cabbage, beef stews, or many other things.  I always have a bottle or two on hand.

There was some spirited debate in my hometown when I was a kid, regarding if I was British or not.  But yep, you busted me.

With that out of the way, brown sauce is also the king of condiments for steak and kidney pie, sausage rolls, steak bakes, and even the humble bacon blaa.

NOT A BLOODY THING, hence the condiments.

being first born in North America and eating my Welsh, Scottish and English families Thanksgiving get togethers is what drove me to become a Chef.

Mother was an OK cook and like to try new things, her people and my fathers ate boiled mutton with onions and potatoes, I suspect daily.

If salt and pepper was good enough for Ma and Da, it's good enough for you.  Maybe a bit of sage, but no need to get crazy.

I would say they know nothing, but beef wellington is a Brit thing, and it's amazing. Aside from that, I think the next best thing they could invent to eat sounds like a venereal disease, Spotted Dick
