These structures were built out of granite without the use of metal tools perhaps a thousand years before the Incia people discovered them.

Went to Peru and Machu Picchu earlier this year, its very obvious the older stuff was built with a lot more skill than the newer stuff. There are megaliths all over the place in that country, its absolutely amazing.

My thoughts are that the Inca inherited these megalithic sights and built on top of them (not uncommon in the ancient world) trying to emulate what they saw, but without the extreme precision of their forbearers. The very square blocks on the right in the photo actually represent the "middle" building period according to some researchers, the earliest blocks are the larger non-uniform building technique in the bottom photo, that appear to be 'melted' together almost (behind the Mrs). The fact that these stones are made of granite.
They were cut without any metal tools having been invented yet. Many of these stones had right angle inside corners cut into them. Try cutting a right angle inside corner using modern tools. It makes you wonder why they cut such elaborately shaped stones when square or rectangular stones would have been much easier to cut and stack.

Machu Picchu was built in the 15th century; the reason it looks like less skilled labor built on top of it is because when it was "found" it was in ruins and what you see today is the effort to rebuild the thing by people that dont have a month to rub two stones together to get them to fit.
