I've never seen this before....but I'm never usually home in the afternoon when UPS comes by.

Today I was home with my daughter (she's sick).....and the UPS guy delivered a package.....out of a Uhaul truck!

I'm assuming they must be just trying to keep up with the Holiday demand...and not have enough trucks to keep up??  I guess renting for a few weeks is much cheaper than buying more trucks.

Anyone else even seen this before??

Yup.

Saw one last night.

same here.

Saw a Uhaul van the other day and had packages up to the windows, this was at 5pm too.

They have done this forever.  They don't have enough drivers or trucks to handle the 100% + increase in deliveries, so they hire temp drivers and rent trucks.  In some places they hire people to deliver out of personal vehicles.

They are always swamped this time of year.

I've seen FedEx do it before too.

Its the economy; its kicking ass and consumer spending is making UPS and FedEx work in overdrive to meet demand.

Winning.

They all do it all the time. I worked for Enterprise and we always had trucks out to UPS and FedEx. This time of year they even rent minivans and SUVs to try to handle demand.

Are they subcontractors?

Ordering tires from tire rack and they were delivered by some plain clothes dude driving a uhaul.

They do it every year, you can always tell when it is the holidays, because you won't find an available U-Haul or Penski van for rent anywhere.

[#12]
They've been doing that for years around here.
My usual driver is so happy they didn't take his UPS package car away and stick him in a UHaul this year.
Here are some picks from last year.

Pretty common.  I've seen them transferring overload from ups trucks to rented trucks at the end of my driveway a couple times this year.  I have a big paved area in front of my gate, which I've learned makes it convenient for that, cops parking to kill time, and for every vehicle that looks like a delivery truck from 1/4 mile away to pull in to turn around and leave again.  Always when you are looking forward to an expected delivery like the last part needed for an SBR 458 socom build.

I had a Delta Point Pro showing delivered from UPS yesterday.  Said left at front door.  Nowhere to be seen.  I started walking the neighborhood door to door like a porch pirate looking for it.  I found it a block away.  I picked up my box and showed it to the ring camera as best I could, then walked away.  UPS is retarded this time of year.

Yep.  Seen a few trucks with a UPS brown trailer on the back too.  I wonder if it's 1 big thing or a bunch of smaller things?  I'd be pissed if my crew loaded up my truck AND a damn trailer!

Yes it’s all because of Trump too ! Now if he will drain the swamp faster then what he. Has been doing things will even be better. Day after election he needs to get on TV and say I have told all my agency Leaders I want a 10 % reduction in head count and budgets in 2 weeks.
We will offer early buy out if we have too. Then U.P.S can start hiring these same people that use to sit on their butt all day and see what it’s like to have a real job !  MD

They always do this and they're not that swamped.

Why own a surge asset for 12 months out of the year when I can rent that asset for two months?

UPS Peak is exactly that...a peak month.  Therefore if my base demand for service is consistently 100 trucks over the year and my peak months require 120 trucks, why do I want to own those last 20 trucks that cost me money and collect dust.  Nah bro, I'll just rent those 20 trucks and cover my surge fleet.

All major trucking companies do this.

They are doing better then the shit show at Fed Ex. Got hung up on 2 times, going to loose a customer over this shit and posibly contract.

Already launched an email to the CEO and been talking with the corporate office. Fucking thing was suppose to be delivered Monday and has been doing circles around the city. Heard from one of the drivers they have a stack the size of a parking lot, they are scanning them, and not putting them on the truck to make it look like they are making their routes. Fucking un belivable.

SOP and has been for at least 25 years.

Drivers are happy to drive the Uhaul or Penske because it has climate control.

Hence the folks driving the rentals are often management.

Working peak sucks ass and I don't miss it at all.

USPS delivered my mail at 10:30pm last night.

It is usually delivered by 1:30pm. I have also been getting a ton of mail for people who live on different streets.

Yup. The U-Haul lot by my house was basically picked empty. Only had the 24ft F650s/Chevy C5500s left and some pickups and vans.

I own a Budget Truck Rental dealership as an add-on to my self storage business.   Both UPS and Fedex rent trucks from me every year from early November until after Christmas.  We call it the "Package Season".

I believe Amazon now does not use Fed Ex at all including sellers who sell and fulfill their own orders.

That's gotta hurt.

I was working in Minneapolis and needed a Penske. I had to go to a rental place 20+ miles from my hotel to find a truck. The rental guy told me that its package season. Between Amazon, Fed Ex and UPS nearly every single rental is taken. He also said Penske rented out over 100,000 units to those 3 last year and more than doubled the amount this year.

I talked to the USPS driver that delivers Amazon packages on Sunday.  She said she had 2500 packages to deliver.
When I told the UPS driver, he said his load is about 60% Amazon and USPS is losing their Amazon contract on on the 1st.

Yep, they will even do "mothership" ops here. They will trailer in a bunch of golf carts, load them up from the uhaul, and then send out the carts to deliver the packages.
Lather, rinse, repeat
