Uhaul is the most neglected trucks you can rent.

I got a package delivered from UPS at 10pm the other night.  Driver said they still had 7 trailers for the day they hadn't touched.

Happens every year around here as well.

I remember one year seeing a dock height Ryder truck making local stops.

That must have been a pain in the ass.

The one that came by yesterday had a bad muffler. So basic maintenance seems to be out the window.

Yep, they will even do "mothership" ops here. They will trailer in a bunch of golf carts, load them up from the uhaul, and then send out the carts to deliver the packages.
Lather, rinse, repeat

They have done this forever.  They don't have enough drivers or trucks to handle the 100% + increase in deliveries, so they hire temp drivers and rent trucks.  In some places they hire people to deliver out of personal vehicles.

They've been doing that for years around here.
My usual driver is so happy they didn't take his UPS package car away and stick him in a UHaul this year.
Here are some picks from last year.

Not a new thing.

When I worked for the Post Office, we had to rent vehicles from time to time when we were short of mail trucks due to maintenance issues. Even delivered mail from the right side of the supervisor's pickup truck while he drove because we were short on vehicles.

When I lived in Vermont, one UPS guy rode a bicycle pulling a little trailer piled high with parcels. I'm pretty sure he was not right in the head...

A guy in a Silverado delivered a to me package from USPS this week. All carriers use alternative methods this time of year.

Non-standard trucks are usually seasonal drivers or pickup drivers grabbing outbound so they can stay out and finish delivering. I've used everything from budget, uhaul, penske, ryder to 4x4 chevy tahoe's if the snow was bad enough.

FedEx told Amazon adios this year. So UPS is picking up the slack in certain areas. Of course UPS is usually a bit of a shit show around here so that's only made the situation worse.

Rural areas it's frequently contract mailmen.  Last few places I've lived, USPS has used contracted employees rather than federal employees.  Small town USPS has always been more pleasant to deal with as well.

Guessing it's not normal in your AOR though?

Amazon told both adios. Hence why you see prime trucks now..

I talked to the USPS driver that delivers Amazon packages on Sunday.  She said she had 2500 packages to deliver.
When I told the UPS driver, he said his load is about 60% Amazon and USPS is losing their Amazon contract on on the 1st.

Really?  That's great news!

Unless they are planning on ramping up their own delivery, in which case that's not so good news.

amazon delivery, proving that yes it can get worse than usps.

Amazon has rented a bunch of Enterprise rental vans to make their deliveries in this area.

Amazon needs to be more efficient, I placed an order of 10 items, they shipped in 4 packages shipped by all 4 carriers but all showed up on the same day.

THey always do this during peak season.  It's probably cheaper to rent some trucks for a few weeks instead of buying a bunch of new trucks that they won't need 11 months out of the year.

The UPS guy that picks up at work, CDL driver, we fill a pup a day, said he has been pulling 4 to 5 53' trailers out of the local Target distribution center a day.  They usually pick up 1 to 3 pup trailers a day.  Target fulfills online orders from their regional DC's.....

Delivered for 1-800-flowers as a late teen, very common on high demand days like valentines, along with temp drivers.
