Wasn't there a Colt prototype/experimental project that was roughly similar to that? I thought there was a 20" with a sort of weaver type rail and scope fitted, long before picatinny uppers were around. I can't remember if the FSB was cut down or not.
Found it. colt 656. I suppose the upper in the OP is a modern interpretation of it.

I personally thought it would be a fun resto-mod upper to offer. So I did it. If you don’t like it, don’t buy it.  We do plenty of clone stuff, have you bought any of them?  |

Only thing i'd have done different on that one, is use a heavy barrel, those old 3-prongs look freakin awesome on a thick barrel. I have one in 14x1 LH on a Vepr and it just looks right for some reason. Got another one on a heavy barrel AR, also looks amazing. |

Would have made more sense if they had done the right upper also. They would have to mill off an A1 and bolt down a weaver rail. I don't know how many modded A1 uppers I have thrown away over the years but I wish I still had them because who would have thought that they would be worth something now.
