bump

So I tried this...and I don't have the same photo program.  This is the best I could do.

Can someone add boarders to them for me?  My program doesn't do that.

Also, I couldn't get anywhere with this one.  Is the lighting wrong or can this be made to look better?

Here is my UZI that I tweaked a little bit.  I think it looks kinda neat
Can anyone boarder it so I can see what it looks like? Please?

OP, What kind of lens are you using to take the picture of the 1911?

I'm having trouble getting the muzzle in focus here.

The problem you're having is a shallow depth of field. There are two ways to solve this:

1. Using the manual mode of your camera, set your exposure to a smaller aperture (which is a larger number). This may not be possible depending your camera, especially when using the flash.

2. Back the camera up as far as possible and zoom in as far as possible.

Nikon D80 (kit lens) in manual mode, but I'm still learning how to use it.

I had the camera quite close, I'll try backing up and increasing zoom.

That looks pretty good. The biggest single improvement would be to find a way to bounce the flash instead of it being directed right at the gun (which causes the light to look somewhat harsh). Your editing looks spot on though.

I actually took a picture exactly like yours when I first bought my G23 with the only difference being that I bounced the flash off the ceiling. Other than that, our pictures are identical.

I have an external flash with rotating head. Obviously, that doesn't work with point-and-shoot cameras, but I've heard of people holding index cards or foil in front of the flash angled toward the ceiling for a similar effect.

a simple piece of paper is a great difuser on my kodak z710.  fold it lengthwise and tape under the flash and over the flash, works great and cheap.  I use levels in photoshop as my primary adjustments.  the white dropper is an effective white balance and the black should be used on true black things...like your gun ...

My go at it. Redirected the flash with an envelope. Problem is my tub is beige as are the tiles around it. Plus my little cannon PowerShot is a little bleh. I wish I had something like a 20d or 30d like I get to use while I'm working at the newspaper.

ETA: Added a second photo.

ETA2: Put the AR in a different tub. A little more white. Lighting was giving me fits though. Plus the layout didn't want to cooperate, giving me a bit of the tub rim in the shot that I couldn't easily get rid of. It ended up looking kind of neat like it went with my title.

Pulled the right most triangle in the Levels menu a little more toward the center (near the bottom of the right slope) and got this:

Best Buy sent me a 10% off any one item coupon, so I'm going to pick up a Nikon SB-600 Speedflash tomorrow for $219 - 10%. I have been struggling with lighting and think that bouncing a flash is probably the best way to go.

Oh look, Joe bought an SB-600 for his D80 and bounced it off the ceiling. I'm starting to learn, slowly but surely.

Cool, thanks. Was just trying to stick to the instructions so I didn't really try that. I just wish I had a better camera. Hopefully I'm going to get to try this technique with my grandad's Luger in the next couple weeks. I can't wait.

How do you bounce the flash off the ceiling or walls without getting a very harsh "line" of light in the middle of the firearm, or having it wash-out the whole gun when you edit it in Photoshop?
